As I looked across the restaurant towards the entrance I could see 3 people waiting to be seated and as the waiter escorted them to their table a man was standing at the desk and as he turned I immediately recognized him. It was dad.

I hadn’t seen him for more than 6 years on my twenty first birthday but he had hardly changed. Unlike me I suppose so I was unsure what to do. What a place to meet and how much did he know about my life or my circumstances.

Brandy leads my out of her place dressed and to her car. I’m clutching her hand until we get there and she smiles and blushes a bit and opens the car door for me. I get in and try to sit and slide into the seat even though I’m not wearing a skirt, it just seems right to try and do it like that. It’s not really that skirt locking my legs together thing but something like it.

I can smell the dirt on him, the unwashed smell of body odor and the releasing of the toxic garbage in his system out through his skin. Bishop slices through the water with an ease she finds more than a little disturbing. Her new body moves far too well through the warm, chlorinated wetness of the hotel pool. Lap after lap, all alone in her black one-piece from the pricey ladies shop in the lobby, her world growing smaller and smaller with each passing moment until it feels like she’s the only person in the universe. It’s just her and the warmth and the sounds muted by the water in her ears, and it feels so good to be alone in the here and now. Without company. Without context.
