After a quick preparation in the makeup room, where essentially all she did was powder me to stop reflection from the lights, I was taken to the studio where I was seated just off camera.

The programme started, “Today in the South, this is John Highland and Lisa Buckingham.” The camera cut to Lisa.

“Yesterday in Portsmouth, a lady was out walking her dog, when the dog jumped or fell into the river, which was swollen and flowing very fast because of the recent weather, an inch of rain fell a day or so ago and the remnants of the snow made the rivers all very dangerous, with flooding in a number of areas. The Environment Agency issued several flood alerts for the area.

“When the dog seemed to be sucked under by the fast current, the owner tried to pull it out, however she overbalanced and fell in herself. She was seen by a young mother out with her two children and their own dog.

“The lady was indeed a lady, Lady Ellen Townsend, wife of the media tycoon, Sir Malcolm Townsend. The young mum who saved her, is Cathy Watts, who is with us in the studio.

“Cathy, describe what you saw and how you reacted.”

I gulped and dry mouthed said, “One of my kids saw the lady leaning over the water and pointed, as she did we both saw her fall into the river. We were standing on a bridge and although she was about a hundred yards upstream, I was worried that she could be smashed against the buttresses of the bridge.

“I called 999 and asked for help, then decided I had to try and do something myself.”

“You surely didn’t think of jumping in to help?”

“No that would have been suicidal, I don’t swim that strongly and I’d have drowned as well. No, I took the dog’s lead off her and threw it out to the drowning lady.”

“How long is the lead?”

“It’s one of those retractable ones and about fifty feet long.”

“Go on,” urged Lisa.

“I threw the handle end to Mrs Townsend, although I didn’t who it was then and dragged it past her, she somehow grabbed it and wrapped it around her arm.

“I knew it wouldn’t be strong enough to pull her out, so I just tried to keep her from being bashed against the bridge, and managed to tow her to the bank.”

“So you held her against the bank until the emergency services arrived?”

“Yes, I wasn’t strong enough to haul her out myself, so I had to take the risk that she might drown, but I couldn’t risk falling in myself, and the bank is very slippery with the mud and wet grass.”

“Absolutely, so what happened next?”

“A few moments later the fire brigade arrived and they used ladders to get down to her, then they hauled her out and the ambulance arrived.”

“We spoke to the fire crew who did the rescue, at the scene, the river was still very high.”

They cut to a clip of the three firemen standing by the bridge, they described what they did and the marks were still on the bank, including the ones where I nearly fell in myself.

“Cathy Watts, you’re a heroine, girl. You saved that lady’s life by your quick thinking and prompt action. We salute you.” The three firemen took a deep bow and I blushed. It cut back to Lisa.

“Your fan club, Cathy.” I blushed again and shrugged. “What do you think now about yesterday?”

“I don’t know, I saw the marks in the mud where I slipped and nearly fell in myself. I don’t know what I think.”

“When did you find out who it was you saved?”

“I didn’t save her, the fire and ambulance crews did that. I just helped them.”

“They think you saved her, but let’s move on, when did you find out who she was?”

“On the way here.”

“Really?”

“Yes, the cabbie bringing me told me of rumours that it was Lady Townsend. I hadn’t heard any until then.”

“You met her husband a few minutes ago, and he agreed to be filmed,” they cut to the film clip which must have been edited faster then the speed of light.

“You must be Cathy, you saved my wife?” Sir Malcolm came into the room and we shook hands. I nodded to his question. “How can I thank you?” He pulled me to him and with tears in his eyes, he hugged me and said, “thank you,” over and over.

“I don’t need thanks, I did what anyone would have done.” I tried to pretend it was an ordinary, everyday event. Unfortunately, it’s becoming that way for me.

“My dear, girl, nine out of ten people wouldn’t have had the presence of mind to do what you did. You are exceptional.”

“I don’t think so.”

“You are, and I owe you my life, without my dear wife, my life would be worthless and not worth living. I am forever in your debt.”

“Sir Malcolm, I release you from your imagined debt. You owe me nothing, just tell her to get well soon from me and my girls.”

He hugged me again and kissed me on the forehead. “Thank you, my angel.”

“As you can see,” said Lisa, “Sir Malcolm Townsend was delighted to meet our local heroine, Cathy Watts, who is a teacher at the university and mother of two little girls. He was right though in one regard, you are extraordinary, aren’t you?”

“I don’t think so,” my heart sank, what were they going to bring up now?

“You helped in trying to save a young man who crashed into a tree a few days before, while he was sledging. Previously, you saved a baby girl who was stuck in a burning car, and a Russian woman who’d been trafficked by a prostitution gang. This isn’t to mention catching a bag snatcher and making a documentary film on European dormice.”

I sat there dying of embarrassment.

“And you don’t think you’re special. I’ve got news for you, Catherine Watts, soon to be Lady Cameron, oh yes, besides all this she’s engaged to Lord Simon Cameron, you are one very special lady, and this programme in conjunction with Sir Malcolm’s media group have nominated you for an award from the Royal Humane Society.”

“Oh shit”, I mumbled beneath my breath, but at least they hadn’t mentioned my op.

Cathy does it again

Cathy has done it again this story just goes on and on but do not stop as a lots of us would be lost without our daily fix of this story. Keep it up Dawn

Talk about being

Talk about being "blindsided", the news people certainly did that with Cathy. After all this, it will be a wonder if she can even leave her house without being hounded by news reporters or autograph seekers. But in the end, she is indeed a heroine.

Yup.

Previous comments said it. Cathy is a hero. She sees something that needs doing and she doesn't hesitate to get involved. But... she uses her head in most cases and manages to keep herself alive along with helping others. Angharad has done a great job of creating a true superhero but keeping her very human at the same time.

I wonder....

Will Cathy ever be relieved of the concern about being a "real" woman? I suppose it hasn't been that long since surgery or since she started living full time as a woman. Her fans certainly think of her as a woman, soceity in general, unfortunately, probably isn't as tolerant as us and would still see her differently. I wish that could change but I guess it's the facts of life these days. Well.... she's a mom of two, soon to be a wife, who knows what will happen with Stella's baby, and of course to some, she's an angel.

Interesting turn...

Now, perhaps Cathy SHOULD have asked Sir Malcolm if perhaps he could convince some of the "reporters" to stop chasing her... :-)

Interesting taping. If memory serves, they were supposed to tape this, then after Cathy approves, broadcast. So, she's probably okay. You know - it's actually NICE to hear "good news" like that... :-)

Now, I can just see Mima & Trish home with Auntie Stella watching the show, and the girls saying "There's mummy!" :-)

Thanks,
Annette

Duplicate Post

This posted twice - deleted, as the first probably wasn't worth the disk space or screen space it takes up. So, repeating it? Nah. Though, Angharad's story is a fun read. :-)

And ... for once ...

No mention of the Dormouse clip.

Angharad; I don't want to tell you this But, I don't think you can ever end this story unlest you or Cathy dies of a natural death or this bunch readers would probally come to to hunt you down! Just my thoughts of your story writing ability! Richard

Nah, us Ang/Bonzi fans is a sedate lot

Though a few of us have homicidial tendencies.

I have a quesion about the British uppperclass, I quote.

Do all future Lady's talk like that?

At least the inteview went fairly well.

The Aristocracy...

Cathy was being polite, John....

PB

John, John, she didn't say it loud enough to be heard

At least, I'd assume that 'under her breath ' meant it was for the most part, unspoken thought dialog.
Many of us Ladies think some things we never vocalize.

Holly wonders, 'Does ^@#$(*&^$$! mean north, south, east, or west, or just what?.'
But the question never gets close to her lips.
Nor would it have even when she spent four years in the Navy, where some of the most common words on other's lips rhymed with 'duck', and 'spit'.

Great work, as usual, Angharad. That's what we've coe to expect.
Even your worst days penning this whatever it is, are better than some of our best ones.

It’s not given to anyone to have no regrets; only to decide, through the choices we make, which regrets we’ll have,

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

Holly

I survived more years...

active duty in the Navy... And didn't add those "explitives" to my vocabulary. Well, I have to admit to having used a few since moving to NJ. Have any of you driven on our highways? You take your life in your hands every time! And, the time I dropped a sheat of 3/4" plywood on my big toe from a nice height (trying to get it on top of the van)... I think I said one of those words, before it became a general cry of pain.

In my case tough, Holly, I think I know what John was saying up there. He was PRETENDING he knew the words, but a young blonde like that - nah. Her vocabulary's not up to even those words. :-)

Annette

Incorrect tense

John, I believe you should have said "a sedated lot" :-)

Oh my

I think Cathy's 15 minutes of fame is verging on becoming a 9 to 5 job !

She has definitely been cursed ( blessed ) with an interesting life.

... Thanks to Bonzi ! ( Yeah, Bonzi I notice that the woman's dog probably did NOT survive - your little touch ? ;-))

Kim

I'm too lazy

to go back and check, but I remember thinking it was ironic that the dog escaped on its own, before Cathy actually had the woman wrapped up nicely. Maybe I read it wrong.

You're right

Missed that part. Been busy doing stuff and must have skimmed over it. Well Bonzi is falling down on the job then. The dog was suppose to die :)>

*A little red faced*

Kim

Of course the dog escaped.

Labrador Retrievers are very good swimmers. In the nine months that we lived next to a lake (in my parents' cottage,) we couldn't keep Lucy (our black lab) out of the water.

Well, she did have to stay out once the lake froze -- except for one time when I walked across the lake (wearing a life vest and carrying a canoe paddle.)

The beaver lodge had a clear area around it. Beavers do that by paddling warm water from the deeper areas up to the surface.

Anyhow, that stupid dog either jumped in or fell in. I wasn't about to take a chance on freezing/drowning myself, so I called her. She came out just as easy as you please. I walked her straight home so that she could dry out in the warm cottage.

Stupid mutt... I don't know if she did that on purpose or not. It didn't seem to bother her at all.

The moral is that most dogs are more capable of rescuing themselves than we are of dragging them out.

Cathy Sure Does Manage to Keep Busy!

Both in the planned and unplanned departments!

I don't know where she gets her energy! I get tired just reading about it! But I sure do enjoy reading about it! Thank you, Ang!

I love it!

That last surprise is just perfect! Because Cathy does deserves it, even if she doesn't think so.

Janice

How is this much different from what Julie suggested?

I had been slacking of since a bit before Christmas and have been reading up over the last few days. Its such a delight to read this story. So funny and witty, full of love and care, of sad and fun times. Thank you so much for that Angharad.

If I read correctly there is nearly all parts in this version of the interview as Julie suggested. I wonder if Cathy will let that slip. On the other hand I was surprised Cathy or Erin did not try to use this to promote the film more. At least the BBS slipped it in at the end.

As for Sir Malcolm, Cathy could have made him give a sizable amount of money to a charity. If Cathy would have let the BBC mention of GID status again this money could have gone to Mermaids. It would have given Mermaids greater publicity and show the masses that a transsexual can be a great asset to society (like any other person) and not just a train on medical recourses or a danger for other peoples self identity.

I can understand Cathy's struggle with being really female. I know I do struggle with that at times as well. I hope we can both eventually accept us as normal women. As normal as can be.

Thank you again for sharing this wonderful story with us Angharad.

tight hugs

Holly

I think Cathy's ideas are quite alot of my peers is in - do the chance - & hopefully ''go stealth'' and continue life as was.

I do believe she like my peers, is learning that ''going stealth'' isnt as easy to do as it used especially with tabloid mentality & worse, all the stuff we put out on the internet ... just like me posting comments here could come back to bite me on the ass & I'm fairly well ''out'' as a post-op w/o putting a sign on my back. Me, I figure there's too many people that know I transitioned, I'll talk to most anyone one on one about it, but I def dont advertise what i did outside what I am (woman)

If i'm asked a question, I answer it, and sometimes my answer isnt what someone desired to hear, if they cant handle it, that their issue. I spent more than 45 yrs in hiding because of being in military & various classified clearances for the type of work I've done over the yrs

Cathy

False modesty is not going to save you this time girl! There is a folder of rescues and kind deeds that just keeps getting thicker. Some of them may only be seen by Saint Peter, but even the attenuated version is still impressive.

Aw shucks, tweren't nuthing.

On this side of the Pond Obama would be the presenter, aren't you lucky ! Here it'll probably be the Queen, Or the Duke of Wales. (a fellow Welshman) who pins it on.
