Drabble Theatre: The Skirt

Printer-friendly version

“You are not wearing that skirt!"

“Mum!“

“It’s too short.”

“Everyone wears skirts this length; I don’t want to look like an old granny, do I?”

“Well, it’s the wrong colour.”

“But all my other skirts are in the wash.”

“Anyway, you shouldn’t be wearing a skirt at all.”

"Why not?"

"Because you're a boy."

“It’s a fine time to worry about that now. If I don’t hurry, I’ll miss my bus; I don’t want to be late for my English exam.”

Short sighted?

Given "All my other skirts are in the wash", it's certainly taken Mum a long time to realise what her son's wearing to school... :)

The exchange reminds me a little of the old joke where the son's explaining to his mother that he doesn't want to go to school - amongst other reasons both the pupils and staff hate him. The punchline: "But you have to go...you're 43 years old and you're the head!"
