Well what else can you do?

So on Monday 9am sharp, I set off to start my trip to the Jurassic coast. There was no need to rush, I had all day, besides which it was a bit windy. I headed towards the North Somerset coast before turning south to cross the western end of the Mendip, familiar roads.

Less familiar but still known to me were the roads that took me across the Levels to Langport where I stopped for my lunchtime sarnie. It was over half distance which was good, the remaining distance, some 60km was virgin tarmac for me and mayhap a bit hillier than I imagined. There had been a couple of light showers before lunch but the afternoon turned out dry and reasonably warm fit which I was grateful.

I crossed into Devon just before Axminster with 100km covered, in theory it was downhill from the carpet town but of course it wasn’t. Evenhh to sully I reached the coast and after a brief stop, I made the short journey to Beer, arriving promptly at 17.00. A long day but steady for just shy of 140km.

With a somewhat dubious forecast for today, I decided that Tuesday would be a loop down the coast to the Exe before looping inland to return to my base. On paper, a simple enough ride, in practice you cross three river valleys, steep drops in, steep climbs out and as I was trying to keep off the main roads, some of the lanes were tiny! It took me until lunchtime to reach Exmouth where I stopped for lunch looking across the river to Dawlish Warren.

It was s as unite pleasant except for the wind but after eating that became less of an issue as I headed up past Exeter airport then eastwards for Honiton. Luckily you don’t have to use the A30 racetrack, the old road is quite up to the job. From Honiton it’s not far to the coast, t to he only fly being a series of double figure % climbs!

1500 metres of climbing over 96km is fairly intense.

And so to today. The forecasts were right, strong winds pushed s series of squalls through pretty much all day. I spent the morning at the Pecorama miniature railway here in Beer where oi got a bit damp but enjoyed my train ride and the model layout exhibits.

This afternoon’s entertainment was a walk along the coastal path to Seaton where I didn’t ride the tram! Tbh I was feeling a bit soggy, the wet and wind wouldn’t let you see much so perhaps another time. Then it was back to Beer for a last night before I moved on tomorrow.

Despite the weather I’ve enjoyed the trip so far, I might even treat myself to a beer in Beer later.

I’ll be back with more from my trip at the weekend but for now,
Tschussie,
