Grow Old With Me!

Grow old along with me!
The best is yet to be,
The last of life, for which the first was made:
Our times are in his hand
Who saith, ``A whole I planned,
Youth shows but half; trust God: see all, nor be afraid!

from the poem by Robert Browning, Rabbi Ben Ezra

“Do you remember the look on your father’s face when we told him?

“’Everybody wants their child to find someone they love, and we always thought you’d marry a doctor…just not…’ He was so angry!”

“Yeah…he started to cry. I thought your mother was going to lose it right then and there. You know?

“Yep…she was almost hysterical.”

“And the way she stared at me? Like I had two heads.”

“”No daughter of mine is going to ruin the reputation of this house hold. Never in a million years would I have expected something like this. You have brought shame upon this family!’ Worst thing I ever heard him say!”

“I felt so small; like our world had come to an end.”

“Well, he was raised a certain way by his parents and they were raised a certain way…I wasn’t surprised, and it worked out in the end, you know?”

“Yes…And you know how glad I am that they did? After my surgery I was so insecure. And then when you came along and we got together. I think I would have died if they didn’t accept me.”

“Well…seven generations of gynecologists and here I bring a chiropractor into the family. A shock, but they got over it. You might say that after forty- two years, they’ve finally adjusted.”

“I love you, Marta!”

“I love you, Inga!”

What an Evil Twist

Or, you got me well and skewered that time. I certainly can understand their displeasure. I didn't really figure it out until I realized this was after they had gotten together for some time, long after her surgery. Of course they were displeased. Marrying a chiropractor of all things!

Love you,
