Why?

Who is he, some cartoon character with a cult following?

Maddy

Put the sideburns down and step away from them...

Again, why?

Home, if it makes any difference.

Ah, OK

I don't do sports. When watching the news on TV and the sports come on the TV goes off. Thankfully the channels I watch the most are ABC and PBS (Public Broadcasting) so I didn't have a big disruption in my viewing habits. I just took the NBC Station out of my favorites list. But I have no idea who did what to who and don't much care.

Nah..

If I was daft enough to want something to commemorate bike racing effort it would be for Marianne Vos. A great champion for several consecutive years now. Only she's a woman, and ladies bike racing don't count, or maybe because she isn't British eeh?!

Jo-Anne

I take your Vos and trump it

I take your Vos and trump it with a Beryl Burton. One quote:
"In 1967, she set a new 12-hour time trial record of 277.25 miles[3] – a mark that surpassed the men’s record of the time by 0.73 miles and was not superseded by a man until 1969. While setting the record she caught and passed Mike McNamara who was on his way to setting the men's record at 276.52 miles and winning that year's men's British Best All-Rounder. She is reputed to have given him a liquorice allsort as she passed him. Apparently, McNamara ate the sweet."

i used to race against both of them quite regularly but as far as i know there were never any t shirts!

I did get to beat Beryl a time or two but that was when i was at my peak and she was pretty much riding her last events but even so i still remember it being a bit of a milestone. Mac was a different case, i could take him at shorter distances some weeks, the longer events were never my forte!

Fondly remembered days.

Sure

I imagine you can find plenty of examples of wonderful athletes and sportsmen and women who have a palmares that surpasses that what Vos has achieved up till now. After all she's only 25 years old and has been leading UCI road and cross cycling for just a little of 3 or 4 years.

Here I was thinking that the 'call for acknowledgement' by showing your t-shirt illustrated support was meant for contemporary sports icons. Or maybe you felt your patriotic funny-bone a little tickled too much for your liking?

OK

Nine world titles, retired this month.
My point about Beryl was that she had a sense of humour, a funny bone that needs no patriotism to tickle it. That is why I quoted the sweetie incident. The simple fact is that the world of cycling has been dominated by UK (and IoM) riders for the last few years, and along with swimming success has generated an awful lot of snide remarks, usually from Aussies. I quote:
'John Coates, the head of the Australian Olympic Committee, said Britain's performance was "not bad for a country that has no swimming pools and very little soap" '

They also commented that the UK did well in sports that involved sitting down...

:-)

Oh she could ride

no questions about that.

But https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marianne_Vos is why, count them yourself. Only she ain't from the UK, and she's a woman so there's much less hubba about that, this is after all a man's world. Why I keep replying is that it's irking me that you anglos are so keen to point out cycling achievements from your country'kin', but seem to be trifling others.

But it's understandable, blood is thicker than water, and in a way a country is like family. So.

*shrugs*

Anglo?

Certainly not, dear lady! And not 'irked', either!

I'll get a life when it's proven and substantiated to be better than what I'm currently experiencing.

What's sad

is that half the cycling community haven't heard of Wiggo either, mind you they are probably as ignorant of Mo Farrah or Wayne Rooney, or even David Cameron or Obama. It seems some people live oblivious to the rest of the world, in their little ruts, presumably happy or too lazy to do anything about it. Thank God for Guardian readers, who know how to make everything better!
