I believe this is by writer and actor Wil Wheaton (For those old enough he is *also* known for playing Ensign Wesley Crusher in Star Trek Next Generation)

Just a thought that popped up in my head today

Being a dick

Lots of the people I know get really pissed if I tell them no. They have no respect. So in the end I have to be a dick to get them to piss off.

But in that case

this adage is more for them then for you. They don't like you saying no.....

Getting to 'No'

Many Humans seem to feel that saying 'No' is a sign of weakness. In the macho world of business saying no to your boss when being asked to take on extra work for no compensation can lead to you losing your job (in some parts of the world).
That aside, by not being able withing yourself to be able to say 'No' serves to increase the stress you are under.
I had had hard time doing just that in the early 1990's. I ended up with stress induced angina.
My doc quickly got to the bottom of it.

The reaction I got when I started to say 'No' at work was quite surprising. I always gave a good reason why I was saying 'No'. One manager asked me for a report on a project 30 minutes before I left work to go to the airport to go on Holiday.
'Can't you take a later plane'.

"No I can't. Unless of course you want to face the wrath of my whole family and foot the bill yourself that is?"
I didn't wait for a reply but just walked out of the office feeling good.

The incident wasn't mentioned when I got back 3 weeks later. He never did get the report from me nor anyone else. His macho style just couldn't accept being told No. Come the first round of 'rightsizing' he was out the door pretty quick.

Since then I have told a good number of my managers 'No'. It isn't easy but my life is a lot less stressful.

Try it yourself. Don't rant or get into a tizwas over something trivial. Be calm and collected. Be helpful to whoever is on the other end of the 'No'.

IMHO, the world would be a far better place if more people were able to say 'No' AND importanly being able to accept that 'No' means no and not 'Yes'.
Just my two JD's worth.
