LGBT teen in Buffalo, NY takes his own life

Last May, Jamey Rodemeyer added his video to the "It Gets Better Project", the Internet video site where adults share hope with LGBT teens, a minority likely to be bullied by even the adults in their lives and suffer a disproportionately high suicide rate. On Monday, the 14-year-old teen from Buffalo, N.Y., was found dead outside his home, having apparently taken his own life.

PORT ORCHARD, Wash. – A 15-year-old boy has been suspended from school after wearing high heels and a dress to school as a part of a challenge laid down by his mother.

Sam Saurs, a ninth grader at Sedgwick Junior High School in Port Orchard, said he told his mother that wearing high heels wouldn't be that hard. Saurs' mother challenged him to try it and he accepted. To take it even further, he decided to wear a dress, too.

The Hawaii Legislature approved a bill on Wednesday allowing civil unions for same-sex couples, sending the measure to the governor, who has said he will sign it into law.

Democratic Gov. Neil Abercrombie's office said he intends to sign the bill within 10 days, and civil unions would begin Jan. 1, 2012.

The Supreme Court has rejected an appeal from opponents of same-sex marriage who want to overturn the District of Columbia's gay marriage law.

The court did not comment Tuesday in turning away a challenge from a Maryland pastor and others who are trying to get a measure on the ballot to allow Washingtonians to vote on a measure that defines marriage as between a man and a woman.

A man was charged Thursday with malicious harassment -- the state's hate crime statute -- after police said he yelled a derogatory slur at a transgender woman and assaulted her.

The incident happened about 3:50 p.m. Sunday at Northwest Market Street and 15th Avenue Northwest. The woman told an officer the suspect approached her at a bus stop, punched her several times with closed fists and yelled a slur at her.

When government forms inquire of her marital status, Isabelle Barker sometimes resorts to an asterisk and an explanatory note.

She and her wife, Cara Palladino, got married five years ago in Massachusetts. Six months later, for job reasons, they moved to Pennsylvania _ one of the majority of states that do not recognize same-sex marriages.

Hence the asterisk.

Same-sex couples can start applying for marriage licenses Wednesday in Washington.

Supporters say couples planned to line up before the city's marriage bureau opened at 8:30 a.m., and officials at the courthouse were expecting 200 or more people.

At least 16 couples were waiting at 7:15 a.m. inside the city's Moultrie courthouse, which houses the marriage bureau and is just blocks from the U.S. Capitol.

Feb. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Costs incurred in sex-change operations and procedures are tax-deductible, the U.S. Tax Court ruled.

The Washington-based court ruled yesterday that hormone therapies and sex reassignment surgeries are necessary to treat gender identity disorder, a disease, in the case of a Boston- area man who became a woman named Rhiannon O’Donnabhain.

“The Court is persuaded that petitioner’s sex reassignment surgery was medically necessary,” Judge Joseph Gale wrote in a 69-page decision for the majority.

San Diego Comic Con Founder Dies

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8 / CNS) - The man who founded Comic-Con has died. Shel Dorf died Tuesday at Sharp Hospital after a long illness.
Dorf started the San Diego Comic-Con in 1970 at the U.S. Grant Hotel in downtown San Diego, after moving to San Diego from Detroit.

He spent the next 15 years as a leader of the annual convention, which promotes comics and related popular art forms, including sci-fi movies and animated TV shows.

Dorf was 76 and is survived by his brother. Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Home of Peace cemetery located at 3668 Imperial Avenue.
