Just an FYI...

Erin is still home, but she is currently without internet acces. She's trying to figure the problem out herself, but the soonest her internet provider can get a tech out is Tuesday.

She will peek in on us from time to time via her cell, and various wifi hotspots when out and about, but let's PLEASE keep up our good record and leave the place mostly in tact for when she gets back online again.

i can be the tech for erin

Unplug power to modem
Wait 30 seconds
Plug in power to modem
Repeat until you die.

Or... I found out with Fios... Don't unplug the big white box that seems to do nothing.

Big White Box

Piper's picture

The BIG white box that seems to do nothing, powers the Fiber-transiver that translates the "light pulse signals" of the fiber optic line into the coax that feeds your Router, TV Boxes and your phone.

IT also provides Battery Backup power for the phone line when the power is out (but ONLY the phone line not the TV or Internet)

Fios only told me about the back up battery for the phone part. So I unplugged it to plug in a vacuum cleaner. Needless to say, fios went kaput pretty quickly. I called tech support twice... second guy had a clue. He actually just said, "it looks like you are running on battery backup."

Of course I didn't confess to unplugging it. I might have blamed a cat (so, they are useful after all).

Redecorating

Does this mean I have to stop redecorating my room? I really want it to be neon pink!

Samantha

Does this mean we can't play with all the cool bomb-making stuf?

No critical mass amounts of U 235?

No fertilizer and diesel oil?

Not even combinations of salt-peter, sulphur and charcoal?

Sheesh your no fun all all when you get left in charge.

I "requisitioned" it.
Using that stuff sure is quicker than chopping up those damn feminazis with a sword one at a time. :D

Doesn't it wind you up

There you are, happily reading a story, when the house power dies.

You scrabble around in the dark looking for a flashlight, get everything reset, sort out several dozen clocks and power up your PC.

Then the power goes again.

The grey box at the top of the stairs? I've no idea at all what it does; all I know is that, without it, everything's dead, house power or not.

Computers; who'd have 'em?

At least for the moment, problem may have been the power dongle for the modem was bad. Used different dongle, now it works.

Hugs,
Erin

from the ones I've taken

from the ones I've taken apart, the wall warts tend to use lousy (chinese) capacitors. I have power bricks from the 70's that are still working, but ones from the last 5 years that burn out.

I'll get a life when it's proven and substantiated to be better than what I'm currently experiencing.

Aren't they 'posed to burn out?

Gosh, I've been retired so long, I almost forgot what 'lectricity is. So, I um thought that those little capacitors, and those little arky things that burn up do so because they are doing their job. Does that mean that the ones from the 70's aren't doing their job? Just askin.
