Another birthday with a broken promise

Another birthday come and gone
I still stand alone in the crowd
Standing still in time watching life pass by
Friends get married, have kids, divorce, and try again
For me there’s nothing
The piece that doesn’t fit

Another party
I’ve turned a year older but no one celebrates me
Standing in a corner for someone I’ve never met
I’m supposed to know this man
Everyone says we’re close
To keep the peace I pretend
And then the voice
The voice from in my head chimes in
One more year,
One more year you broke your promise
You promised to fix this make everybody see
You said you’d do it all those years ago
I took the pistol out and spared our life
You tried till it got hard
You gave in to those who refuse to see
Now you can’t even look at yourself without hatred
You hate your self
Who you try to be for the love of those who refuse to see
You wish it could end you pray for the end you begged not to come
Now we’re back to that same place we were years ago
The gun or the promise
Quit pretending to be someone you’re not
Fix this body and life
Or if not quit trying and end it
Today the promise wins just barely
Tomorrow we shall see

This might sound rather harsh

Angharad's picture

but instead of angst filled verse do something - however small, fulfil one smidgin of the promise - you'll feel much better. Those who take risks tend to achieve the most, I know, I've done the 'woe is me' and it got me nowhere - the universe isn't going to make it all happen for you, but it might support things once you start to change them.

thanks for notes of concern

this is the story of a promise made about 6 years ago and while I've come a long ways since then but the road I travel is so much longer and sometimes when I look I feel as though I've gone nowhere As I sit here I don't see the Promise losing any time soon

I am always amazed at the power of words when they come flowing out of the heart; even in small numbers.
