Great day visiting my doctors

I guess since I've made a point to tell all about how great it is to be out to my doctors, I should post the latest episode.

I recently visited my endocrinologist for a follow-up visit on my thyroid. In going over all the scans and imaging they've done on it he told me there was one small spot that he wasn't really sure of that was of a minor concern and would like to do a biopsy on it.

For that visit, I was wearing a pair of gray women's slacks, and brown and black print blouse that could be mistaken for a Hawaiian shirt, if it were not for the three-quarter length sleeves with a black cami under that showed a line of black lace just above the last button I had buttoned. On my feet, I had my black wedge sandals and suntan knee-his and my hair done up with a barrette.

Well last Tuesday, I went in for the biopsy but it also worked out that my primary care physician wanted to review my meds so I scheduled it for that same afternoon. I just took the day off and went all out.

I borrowed a pair of tan Capri pants from my wife, bought another pair of wedge woven sandals in brown and gold and wore a scooped neck gold and white print pullover blouse. I painted my fingernails and toenails in a nice plum, wore some lipstick to match. My hair was pulled back with some (as seen on TV) easy combs. I've been complimented on them before by women I've come into contact with. I opted to carry a purse rather then try to manage any kind of wallet in the tiny pockets of my wife's Capri's.

When I got to my appointment the nurse ushered me into a room with her usual professional manner, smiling and making small talk. She did the usual vital signs, gave me a paper to read about the biopsy and had me sign that I'd read it. She then took me into the treatment room. The doctor soon showed up and commented on a good choice of tops to have worn since he'd need to have access to my neck and upper chest. I discovered the reason was that he'd need to use ultra sound equipment to see the spot he was going to biopsy and the scoop neckline meant that I didn't need to disrobe.

Aside from laying in an uncomfortable position and having him stick my neck five times it was an over all pleasant experience.

That afternoon, I went to my primary doctor. Since we really don't have that much of a history, we really hadn't developed much of a rapport. This time, she seemed a bit more at ease with me and we talked about my general health, reviewed my meds and went over what each of them was to do and why I was taking them. At one point, she left the room to get something and when she came back, she noticed my shoes and told me she liked them. I told her I got that Payless Shoes for nine dollars on clearance and she complimented me on my bargain hunting skills.

I had a nice day out en femme. What really made it nice was I wasn't pretending with anyone. Each person I interacted with knew who I was, that my birth gender was male and that I was obviously presenting myself in the feminine role. Each and everyone of them was just great in how they treated me and reacted to my mode of dress.

BTW for those interested I got the results: benign.

Your day out

went well and I'm glad you enjoyed it but I'm more happy that your results came back benign.

Whoo hoo!

I am so glad you put that last sentence in. You kind of had me worried!
I don't do the "en'femme" thing-I truly wish I could, but I am too old, too fat, too ugly, and quite honestly, too scared. I envy you, sooo much.
Congratulations on a great day, and I hope you have many more. My prayers for protection are upon you!

Too Old?

Patricia Marie Allen's picture

Actually, Wren, being old is an asset. I'm 65 and when I dress and put on my makeup, I look a lot like a post menopausal woman. Ever notice how many older women take on a masculine look? Well, the makeup tones down the masculine in my face so that I take on that look. The other thing about older women, if they've got a little weight on them, like I do, they tend to get a little thicker in the middle. It's all due to reduced estrogen in the system.

But anyway, I long ago gave up the idea that my ultimate goal in going out dressed was to pass. I go out to enjoy being me. If I pass, OK, if I don't OK. All I really want it what I got from the staff at my doctors' offices. Acceptance as me.

In short, I'd rather be accepted as a feminine male, than pass as woman. My wife asked why I didn't try to down play my transgendered nature when I went to the doctor. My answer was that it's not a good idea to lie to your doctor. By being totally out, I get to be me and enjoy it rather than worry that they'll figure it out.
