I talked with the cable company, and got them to wave the 470$ fee for my cable box.
I feel a lot better . . .

It just comes down to the bottom line. If you don't have a cable box (can't afford to get one) then you won't be paying for cable. Such things are on a month to month arrangement and can be canceled at any time. Without the box ... no money from Dorthy.

So different in the UK. We just pay monthly to the cable company but you don't buy the equipment. With satellite, I think there is a small install charge.

A place like Best Buy (USA, elsewhere?) or Amazon, or https://www.newegg.com (has been good to me) will sell you a box cheaper than what Cable company wants.
Just make sure the specifications" or "Compatible with ..." match. And check returnability first.

I have got by for the last 7 years with zero cable
all I have is amazon prime and an app on my tv set call Cinema HD that streams just about everything...free. its not 100% dependable BUT with zero cost I am not complaining!
