And near record cold weather here in the Phoenix AZ area, for this time of year, at least.
June more often has the very high temperatures; we got to 117° F this year. We are now in the more humid with thunder and dust storms portion of the summer. Recently it's been cooler and even cloudy sometimes; highs are around 102°. Humidity at that temperature is about 25%, really not bad, but noticeably higher than May or June when it would have been 6%.

You're the same latitude as northern Algeria. We're the same latitude as southern Alaska. 80 degrees is bloody hot when you're not used to it.

Also, remember the relative heat index. Humidity plays a lot in it.
Arizona is dry - the UK is not.
Trust me I know. I spent most of last week in Ft. Worth, TX with temps around 103 every day, then flew home to upstate NY to temps around 90. The 90 was worse because the humidity was close to 90% in NY, while the humidity in Texas was virtually non-existent.
Plus, as you say, it's all what you're used to.

But I'm in NW Ohio... a man-drained swamp. Around here our heat index is typically in the range of 10 to 20 degrees higher than actual temperature. And it doesn't particularly surprise any of us when it's even worse.
Our humidity quite often sits over 80% and frequently gets to 100%.
The UK may be humid, but so's where I live. And 80 ACTUAL temp is still considered mild.
What you're used to has more to it... When I first got back here from Idaho I'd gotten used to the dryness out there and it took some time to re-acclimate to the humidity back home.

Hmmm, 80 degrees here is a lovely comfortable skin temperature...
Most summers, we wind up getting to around 100, sometimes a day or 2 over... but you have to add humidity anywhere from 40-80%... or if it has just rained and the sun came out, as close as you can get to 100% without rain... its not fog, its steam...
Does wonderful things for the hair! Why I can go outdoors with freshly ironed hair and by the time 20 minutes have passed wow have I ever got body! Shortly after that it shifts back to its sorta curly "Naturally Big" self...
