OK, I am doing this out in the open, (1) so I don't have to bug Erin, (2) thinking maybe someone has already had this problem, knowing full well that I am not the sharpest tool in the shed.

So, I went to Lulu and bought Tiffany Shar's, "Bears Know Best" but am stupidly struggling with this stifling download process. I have the Kindle PC program, but don't know what is compatible with what.

I have a PC with Win 7 and when I try to download Apple's reader, it won't go. It says there is an error.

I download stuff all the time from Amazon because they make it easy for dummies.

So what now? Help please?

The Kindle can use epub,

The Kindle can use epub, which is the easiest format to get and load on it. Some of the newer Kindles (the fire, for example) can do PDF as well. Personally, I think epub is better than PDF - PDF is a fixed format, where epub will adjust to your screen and font size.

I'll get a life when it's proven and substantiated to be better than what I'm currently experiencing.

Kindle CAN NOT read ePub

Kindle eReaders can NOT read epub books natively. They need to be converted to mobi/azw (Kindle's proprietary format) first.

Kindle's have been able to read PDF files since the first generation however.

That's weird. I uploaded 180

That's weird. I uploaded 180 epubs to my Mother's Kindle. Now that I think about it, I _did_ do a MOBI conversion for an older one.

Kindle Fire, keep in mind, is an Android tablet. You can use a number of different programs and read anything.

(gods, I'm learning to absolutely LOATHE the new 'input format' section. I work on a netbook, and do a number of other things at the same time - this means I have to keep scrolling down, hit 'preview', then scroll MORE and hit 'save'. I'd rather just have a 'save' or 'preview' option, and some way to 'save' the input format)

Kindle for PC not an Kindle Fire with an ePub reader app.

She said she has the Kindle Reader program for Windows not a Kindle Fire :)

And I was speaking about the Kindle eBook REaders :P

File formats

Lulu seems to offer Bears Know Best in two different digital formats.

If you brought the epub version then you'll probably need Adobe Digital Editions on the PC from http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/

If you brought the PDF version then Anything that reads PDF will display the book for you.

I brought the PDF version, and that works fine with both the Adobe Digital Editions software and Reader X

Adobe Digital Errors

For some reason Adobe Digital will not download to my computer. I think this is all going to have to get much more user friendly.

To hell with it.

I"M being a BITCH! I'm really ill.

I just can't help it right now, and here is why. When I had my SRS in Thailand in 2006, I brought home a resistant strain of e-coli that nearly killed me. They used a PICC line to feed me massive doses of very strong Antibiotics twice a day. When I got well and went back to see the urologist, the first thing she said to me was, "I thought you were gonna die". I was too shocked to reply.

This summer, I have had two very nasty bladder infections and again they gave me a very strong antibiotic, this time orally. The first time I took some probiotic to restore the flora in my intestines and I seemed to be fine in a few days. This time, the pills were stronger and I forgot to take the probiotic.

I have been feeling extremely emotional all day and even suicidal at times. So, I took my feelings seriously and began to ask questions. I just got off the phone with one of the Mental Health folks and he told me the above.

You Post Op ladies, please learn from this experience? I am having the best days of my life right now, and I do not want to die and I am frightened. I just keep telling myself it will be OK.

There are a number of causative factors for UTI's and hygene is one of the things I am going to start being OCD about. We have a house mate who is very unclean, and I will be doing extra scrubbing.

Ebook reader for PC

I would recommend Calibre available here http://www.calibre-ebook.com/ for free. It will convert between formats for you, so long as the story isn't DRM encoded. It will even detect the reader you are using and do that automatically. There is an article about the here http://techsupport.foreverwarm.com/how-to-read-epub-books-on...

Do a Google search on "calibre epub" and you'll come up with lots of sites that have good things to say about Calibre.

Second Calibre

Great program for organising and converting. There is also a handy free program for editing epubs called Sigil if one finds a poorly formatted or edited book.

I third Calibre. The only

I third Calibre. The only that annoys me, is that defaults to .epub, and I prefer.lrf. Both are native to Sony eReaders.

Calibre defaults

I believe that you can set the defaults according to the reader(s) you possess. If you have Sony readers, it should automatically select a compatible format.

- It may depend on which version of calibre you have. My own version is from the stock Debian repositories and is rather old; however, it does epub which is enough for me.

Sigil

I'd like to use Sigil to tidy up some of the books that end up on my Kobo, but unfortunately it requires a fairly recent version of Qt.

Anyone thinking of trying Sigil should be aware of this.

I want it simple.

I guess what I really need is a computer savvy husband. I like to write, cook, write, ride, write, read, hike, write, go on road trips, and write. No where did I mention being a lady computer geek.

So, if Y'all are going to do this electronic publishing, then it needs to be kept really simple. Just sayin'

Physical or Digital Formats -- Someone is ALWAYS left out.

Piper's picture

I'm sorry gwen but complaining about formats not being simple is like complaining that you are blind and are upset that I didn't publish my book in braille even tho I published in in normal print and audio. No matter how many formats either physical or digital there will be SOME version that got overlooked.

LuLu eBooks (ePub format) are generally available via Apple's iTunes/iBooks program, so try installing iTunes and try purchasing the epub books that way if you want something "integrated" or you can install one of the ePub compatible ebook readers on this list: http://www.tgfiction.net/viewpage.php?page=epubreaders
