I guess it's all relative
I guess it's all relative really. I don't think there is a good or not or a better or worse. For me, it's a bit like total reads in that it's nice to have a high number in that its a little ego massage (momma they like me!) but it's not the be all or end all. Also there are some amazing pre-kudos stories on the site that have zero or just a handful of kudos because of that.
Then again I'm an author with a best of less than 48 so I'd probably say that anyway. ;-)
"Just once I want my life to be like an 80's movie, preferably one with a really awesome musical number for no apparent reason. But no, no, John Hughes did not direct my life."
My Peak
My peak is 20, but in my defense, I'm not very good at this :D
For the record...
My highest was 63; the majority of mine are in the 50s and 60s, but I've also got some with 1, 3, 4, 7 and 16 kudos each.
As with the other two statistics ("reads" - which in reality is the hit count, and comments) it's only a general guide to popularity, and only for stories posted in the last year or so since the module was made available. But unlike the hit count, kudos is an underestimate of the number of people who liked your story, as each registered user can only vote once.
So even a lowly kudos of 1 means that at least one person read the story, liked it, and was sufficiently motivated to click the button. You (probably) have at least one fan - one person who's probably waiting for the next story you post. You never know, they may like that one just as much, they may even be sufficiently motivated to leave a comment as well!

I'd like to think it was good. It was my first and I haven't improved on it. Can't beat Real Life!;0

Of Course
48 is great. I think most stories have way less. Perhaps some heavily followed authors, or series that have a sustained following get more, the best example would be Football Girl by Sue Brown get more, but a stand alone story with 48 is doing great.

Kudos are encouraging
Up until recently, I believe the best kudos count I had was in the low 20's. Most entries since the kudo thing started were around 10-15. The first posting for my recent novel, St. George and the Dragon garnered 31. I was very pleased as this was a non-TG story. Charli and the Girl Cave, my next story and a SRU related story blew me out of the water as the kudos ran from around 56 (I believe) for the first part, down to 46 for the conclusion. I'm sure I'll have to get a bigger hat now. It's amazing what something like that can do to my attitude.

It's good
if you write something with which you're happy, then it's very good because at least 48 readers agreed with you. Comparing your counts with others is unhelpful because you write differently to them, we all do. Some stories are very populist, some authors have large followings - I just have two cats who only love me because I can work the can opener...

My highest is
61. Otherwise I have nothing above the 30s. So 48 sounds excellent to me.

My best is 82.... it is on the dress punishment which was a devilish tease

My fiction feels more real than reality
I'd like to say that this isn't a competition, but...
I'm ashamed to say that I do look at the kudos my stories get. I guess it's because I have a hard time believing people acually LIKE my writing.
I like Little Katie's method-figure only one in ten people will take the time to hit the Kudo button. So take your number and multiply it-looks much nicer, doesn't it?
Regardless of that, I think 48 is good. Not stellar, maybe, but I've seen very good stories with fewer kudos. I think your doing fine!

Forty eight kudos? Wow,
Forty eight kudos? Wow, that's like...
four dozen!
I'd be thrilled to get that!
Kris
{I leave a trail of Kudos as I browse the site. Be careful where you step!}
How many?
The way I look at it, anything more than 8 is great. A number of people I've never met in person actually liked something I made, so if more people than actually fit in my living room enjoyed one of my stories it would be awesome! More than that is just gravy.
Anything more than zero is good
Anything more than zero is good because it means one or more readers enjoyed your story. If you get a buzz out of one - as I do - then you should get 48 buzzes out of your rating.
I know I sound prudish, but I really do not believe in parading one's ratings in public. They are a message from the reader to the author and should not be used in a league table to make one author "better" than another. Am I right in thinking the Kudos score is now kept private to the individual? They have disappeared from where we used to see them. If so, I think that's a dramatic improvement.
It's certainly superb that we can now see our Kudos score in the My Stories page. Well done, Erin.
And well done to Shalimar for your 48 Kudos. Carry on the good writing.
Now I Have an Idea
Because of these comments I have an idea of what my present and future stories are like.
Thanks to all who have made a comment.
