I thought it was me

I'm having the same problem. I thought my computer was the problem, but I guess not, Arecee

I had a momentary service hiccup...

But since I was spam opening new comments at the time, I figured I'd just made the site angry at me. (It's technically much more complex exactly what I figured the site was doing, but I'll refrain from going into it.)

Hacker attack

Someone was sending 1000 requests per minute for the admin page, it's kinda like trying to walk into the wind of a shit storm.

We get this every two or three days, then we block that idiot and someone else tries again later. I'm surprised it stayed up, the old server would have crashed. This was a bad one.

Hugs,
Erin

Admin page

Why not change the admin page pointer, so that even if it hits ten thousand times, it's just a straight 404 response, rather than error logging in?

I'll get a life when it's proven and substantiated to be better than what I'm currently experiencing.

Those were 404s

They were trying to access an admin page we had already changed the name of and which is protected at least three ways. They were also spidering the site, trying to download all the visible pages. Since we have more than 100,000 dynamic pages this is a pain in the ass.

probably the simple satisfaction...

Of taking us offline for any amount of time at all.

Some people are sick, really, really sick. This doesn't even have to be about our site's primary focus, simply being a site that can be attempted is all many attackers care about.

Though with that kind of frequency I doubt it's that random, I do suspect whoever our attacker/attackers are - talented attackers are very good at spoofing their... identity for lack of a better word, since the really skilled ones spoof a whole lot more about their packets than simple sender info... - they probably are targeting us rather specifically.

yeah...

That's what I had garnered from what I read of Erin's response. Trying again on a regular basis? I had wondered if some bigoted hacker was sitting at their computer hoping to take this site down.

I can't load the new Bishop

I can't load the new Bishop story. Goes to Cannot open that Web Page notice. Did a complete re-boot, but still no joy.

Hold down shift or control and hit the refresh page button. This will make a new attempt at loading the page instead of handing you the one you got during the hacker attack. If your ISP is giving you a stale page, you may have to wait ten or twenty minutes. AOL is famous for doing that.
