Glad the FBI's involved

... because it sounds to me like the sheriff doesn't want to even entertain the notion that it could be a hate crime based on circumstantial evidence.

You don't shoot someone for absolutely no reason. There's either domestic violence involved, or it's a hate crime. Gang violence doesn't seem likely unless she was just targeted at random since she didn't have a criminal record.

I dunno. Like I said, I'm just glad the FBI's investigating.

Did you catch?

...Sheriff May used the male pronoun in describing her. No respect for her person, even after death. If she was well known in the community, as he said, then why didn't he use the word 'she' to describe her. Too bad. Like you said, I'm glad the FBI is involved.

Yeah, I wondered if I should

Yeah, I wondered if I should mention that, or if I was just being paranoid. I'm glad someone else picked up on that as well. I didn't even think about her being known in her community. This reeks of the same "Good old boys" BS that got my mom's best friend murdered over a decade ago.

If you need a good TG news source...

check out this Yahoo group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/transgendernews/

I have used it for years. Folks from all over the world contribute. If you sign up, I suggest the daily summary as this is a pretty high traffic group. There have been quite a number of posts about this incident there. It's very interesting to see how it is seen through different media.

I also suggest the TG Fiction group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TG_Fiction/

There should be

There should be a mechanism whereby the lack of proper pronouns etc can be addressed to publicly call out public servants for their deliberate ignorance and transgressions. They are not paid to "call it as they see it" expressing their personal judgments and prejudiced biases. All they are doing is telling the criminals that they are safe.
The press is bad enough.

It's Interesting How The Reporting Changes

At first it was just a body alongside a road. Then it was a man in women's clothing. Now it is a transgendered woman. Somebody has been filling in the talking heads a bit. It will be very interesting where this goes. It will probably be a tough investigation, and I'm glad the FBI is involved. The Sheriff has already written it off, and he's a real jerk. I don't imagine he woould seriously look for witnesses. If it was not a hate crime, what was it? I'm sure we can come up with a scenario or two. I think Fugue describes one variation. Then there's the guy that picks her up, and when he finds out the circumstances, does the only 'honorable' thing by killing her. That area of Arkansas is a bit backwards in their handling of justice, although they did castrate a rapist before before he was convicted (I believe). The guy wasn't very innocent and was convicted of a murder later on. He died in prison. Little Rock and NW Arkansas are a bit more accepting.
