Transgender Gilligan's Island
Blog

By Stanman63

In the Gilligan's Island TV series, there was an episode where a mad scientist kidnapped the cast and placed their minds into each others bodies only to be returned because Ginger was swapped with the mad scientist's strong man. [the Professor with Mary Anne]. And in another, Gilligan had to dress as a woman because of a nearby Island Chieftain's search for a wife. Are there any here who'd want to visit that mad scientist;s island?

Island dressing

There were a couple more incidents of crossdressing on the island.

In Gilligan's dream sequence where he's a James Bond type spy, the Skipper is his mother. (Spoiler alert - he's actually an enemy spy disguised as Gilligan's mother.)

In an interesting reversal on the original tradition, when the castaways perform their musical version of Hamlet, Mary Ann portrays Laertes.

my favorite bit from that show

was an episode where Mary-Anne, after being hit on the head, comes to believe she is Ginger. They then try to hypnotize her back to being herself, but Gilligan ends up being hypnotized instead, and thus believes he is Mary-Anne. Even at the age I saw the show, I still was struggling enough with my own gender to wonder what would happen if they had not been able to turn him back into himself, and just had to accept the fact that there were now 4 women on the island.....

Any sitcom that runs 3-4 years is going to have a couple of man-in-a-dress jokes.
It's an easy way to get a laugh: "Ha ha! Isn't that strange and wrong and freaky?"
And with this as its motive it doesn't seem "transgender" (any more than you could say
that right-down-the-middle half man, half woman creature in the GET SMART circus episode
is about intersex people...) so much as plain old trans-phobic. Putting a doll's dress
on a steaming pile of cowflop doesn't make it transgender either. Be nice to see an
actual transgender character on TV that isn't snickered at, treated as a joke...

I watched this episode while on vacation with my first wife; she napped and I was glad she was tired because I didn't know what to say if she had woken up. I only remembered it after our pm exchange just a while ago:

1975 - Medical Center (drama) CBS 1969-1976. Robert Reed (of Brady Bunch Fame) received an Emmy nomination for his guest role in a two-part episode called "The Fourth Sex" where he played a well-known surgeon who shocked his family and colleagues when he announced he wanted to become a woman. The surgeon completed SRS(sexual reassignment surgery) on the second part of the episode. from (ladycloverhoney.com)

It was very well done...the episode ends, as I recall with her character waiting all alone as her new self for a taxi.

But yes, too often the 'tg' character is a guy dressed in clothes for a fraternity prank or to do research or just a silly episode that doesn't take this aspect of the human experience seriously. Great observation.
