Background: A person who was coming to the end of a secondment from GCHQ (Government Communications Headquarters) to MI6 (Secret Intelligence Service) was discovered dead in his flat, his body contained within a bag within his bath. The first post mortem was inconclusive, and there's speculation he'd been killed two weeks beforehand. As there was no sign of forced entry, it's believed the victim knew his attacker - so his private life is being investigated.
In common with most newspapers, The Sun today ran an article covering events. Never mind the fact that no other media source has speculated on the person's private life (other than the Torygraph mentioning a possible row with a lover), and the implausibility of keeping blackmailable secrets from GCHQ and MI6, The Sun has decided that he was a secret crossdresser with a gay lover who didn't want him to move back to Gloucestershire.
Is this a classic case of "Never let the facts get in the way of a good story"?

haven't commented other than to say it's a police matter, the tabloids will speculate. Let's see, he's Welsh, and a keen cyclist - so there you are, obviously a gender bender, especially if they use this site as a research. I just hope they don't say anything to Geraint Thomas--he might feel angry enough to thump them one.
Seriously, I wouldn't be surprised if he was gay - no mention of girlfriends or being married in any of the stories, and these days with the blackmail element less powerful because of the relaxed attitudes of the public and powers that be, it's quite possible. In fact I thought it as soon as I saw the photo in the paper.
What his sexuality is or isn't is only important insofar as he's been murdered and it could be a factor - poor chap.

What I noticed ...
... when I saw his photo on the Guardian's web page last night (and in the paper version this morning) was that he was a cycle time triallist. We don't get a complete picture of his bike but I think it may be a single-fixed and he's riding a fairly big event because he's got shoulder numbers. May be an old picture because the numbers are RTTC (Road Time Trial Council) and it's been Cycling Time Trials for several years. No helmet either but they're not compulsory.
I suppose if any paper was going to stir up the dirt that Murdoch rag, The Sun, is a top candidate. It really saddens me that it sells so well. The sad thing about The Sun is that it was once the Daily Herald (in the 1950s) which was the trades union paper.
