For those with SKYPE, a VoIP phone, I have always been frustrated by having to switch from speakers to earphones when I wanted to talk on the phone. I had somehow thought that I needed to make a switch box to do this, and so finally after months of forgetfulness, finally bought the parts to do it.

As I sat there this morning, getting ready to do the project, but not feeling at all motivated to do it, I had an idea. I had purchased a miniature Sterio spliter cord to do part of the project, reasoning that I could cut it up and splice it to the switch with minimal fuss. As I sat there looking at it, I decided to just plug it in to my laptop and then plug both the phones and the speakers, too. It all works perfectly. I am somewhat confused about why I thought that a switch would be nessessary.

skype

A switch would have the benefit of turning off the speakers to eliminate the possibility of feedback to the microphone.

Switch?

We don need no stinkin switch!

I just plug my headphone and microphone jacks into the front of the tower and turn off the speakers!

Heck 99% of the time I don't turn on the speakers!

I can recommend the Phillips Voip321

This is an cordless phone for use about the house.

It's special feature is that Philips have integrated it into skype. You can make & receive both skype & landline calls from the handset in a very well designed & intuitive manner.

The only problem is that it ties into *one* skype installation on your PC, so you can't have several different address books for different members of the household.

i just finished a Skype call w Catherine Linda ...

Shelly and I were both listening to her on the laptop speakers, and I was using an external noise canceling mike.
Her only complaint was that it was trying to clip the very beginning of my words, but there was no feedback.

It’s not given to anyone to have no regrets; only to decide, through the choices we make, which regrets we’ll have,

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

Skype + Bluetooth

Piper's picture

I tend to use Skype with a Bluetooth USB Dongle and a Bluetooth Wireless hedset that I also use w/ my cell phone. It works great. But recently I've gone to using TeamSpeak instead of skype with the friends I talk most. It's more like a chat room and less like a phone call/party line :)

Bad Hearing

I wish I could say that I listened to too many Rock Bands but in my case, I listened to too many Punch Presses that sounded like 50 Cals, and Air Compressors that sounded louder than an F-18. In short, I do fine if I am talking to one person in a quiet place. On the phone, I need the highest fidelity I can get and at the present that is a head set. So now, I leave SKYPE on the speakers so I can hear it ring, and then switch to the headphones to talk. :)

Many Blessings

Boom box

I use an old boom box for computer speakers, and a microphone to talk on Skype. Never used headphones, I haven't had a problem with feed back.

Mr. Ram

problems for whom?

Dear Ram,
It is not you that have the problem, but the one you are talking to. I have a friend in UK that use a set-up like yours, and I do hear my voice coming back to me with a slight delay. Many times it is OK, but sometimes it gets annoying, Especially as I have to use a language that is not my own.

No complaints

I use Skype to talk with my sister-in-law in Russia, mostly. I've been to her place, she has exactly the same set up as I do, down to the boom box (I bought it for her years ago) I don't notice a delay when I talk to her. She doesn't complain about an echo either.

Usually the whole family is standing around the computer, so the boom box is a good thing, everyone can hear her.
