in 1998, a trans woman was informed she could NOT use the ladies washroom, by the operators of a Lesbian bar. She sued them for sexual discrimination under the Human Rights code of BC. in 1999 the BC Supreme court ruled in her favour, setting the legal precedent that it is sexual discrimination to exclude a trans person because of their gender identity.

The BC Ministry of Health discontinued treatment / support for transitioning in 2000, yet has adopted the latest wpath care standard now and funds breast augmentation and gender reassignment surgery for the trans woman.
They do fund the bottom surgery for the trans male, and I think they fund the hysterectomy for them, as well as the bilateral mastectomy.

With the Government being so forward on these issues, there is actually a fairly large impact on how society in general treats trans people.
In general, being trans is not an issue, 90% of the time anyone speaking to or about you will use the gender pronouns for the gender you are presenting/ transitioning to.
The other 10%, those are the immature/insecure kids, or the Neanderthal types that can't deal with anything different, With the addition of those elderly persons that have not had much to do with anyone different and never had those antiquated attitudes challenged.
