I still get requests to finish the tale I began in 'Goodbye Master Stokes', and not only on this site. Recently I received a message from someone whose praise was so fulsome, and whose analysis of the story was so erudite and penetrating, that I was compelled to look at it again.

Today I began drafting a sequel, in the form of what I plan to be a series of diary extracts written by Peter/Carolyn, beginning where the first part left off. I've come up with a major new character who will play a big part in resolving some of the issues I left hanging in the air, such as the relationships between Peter and the various members of his family. And I believe I've stumbled upon a theme that may resonate with many readers.

Towards the end of 'The Great Divide' Peter learns that as far as adjusting to his new gender identity is concerned he can expect little help from his new school. (This is 1971, remember.) The pupils are left to do that for themselves. And maybe, just maybe, this wasn't such a bad idea...
