Currently I am looking for a distance learning course with an American Studies sylabus, ideally through a U.S. College or University. Although I am from the U.K. my preference is to study under the auspices of the American Education System. Any help or thoughts on the matter would be appreciated.

Why would you

Why would you want to dumb down? For some time now our schools have been dumbing down to meet the lowest common denominator, tossing aside grading systems and later Pass/Fail for "you are all winners". It would be working towards a certificate in underachievement.

Dumbing Down

Many countries including the U.K. have seen standards 'dumbed' down when it comes to general schooling. For example I was looking at BA courses, such as are available through the Unversity of Wisconsin.

US universities are still some of the best in the world

That's a pretty harsh assessment, aimed I suppose at the lower grades in the US. Unfortunately I have to agree that there is some truth to it, in some places.

But that being said, I think the original poster was talking about college or university courses, and US universities are still some of the best in the world. Large numbers of students come from all over the world to study in the US.

As an adult learner ...

I did not mention in my earlier post that I am an adult learner (48 yrs) and now have more time on my hands, with a business qualification and many years experience I guess I could get credits towards a course.

credit for work experience

The test that does that in us is called a CLEP test. Which is defined as college level experience program test I believe. I am doing this for computer programming courses in which I have over twenty years experience in coding in.

It is a long road ahead but I will finally become who I should be.

online education

The best one I heard about is university of phoenix - http://www.phoenix.edu/ . With the new health and education bill that will be signed later Tuesday morning you will even be able to get an education loan that you will only gave to pay 10% of your income each year to pay it off and if not paid off in twenty years then it is written off by the us government.

Education loan

Now why does that scheme seem familiar? Oh yes - looks as though the US government have been doing their research...

As to the US university vs UK university debate, given the subject is American Studies, it's quite possible that the typical syllabi of the US courses more closely match Lynkat's requirements [1] than the syllabi of UK courses. Her decision may not necessarily be a reflection of her opinions on the US education system or the UK education system in general.

(And before anyone gets tempted, this it not the place to discuss our own opinions on the subject!)

[1] Well, they do have a certain geo-(political/cultural/historical) advantage...

Gender Studies as an elective

Some Uni's are offering Gender Studies as an elective as part of the syllabus, I was pleasantly supprised,U.M.U.C. had it as part of thier Humanities department.

You may want to look at some of these education resources

Free University Project Home Page
http://www.freeuniv.com/
has some good links but also many broken links. Sometimes you can search out what the new link is by either the school or instructors name.

Free-Ed.Net

I have not tried this one yet but seems to hold some promise

The links at the bottom are interesting

Annenberg Media programs online Good over all resources

I have had a lot of luck looking at various schools for a interesting subject and than searching with the subject course number and name of either the instructor or school in an advanced search

Some good work is on you tube

I've done remote courses with University of Wisconsin, Maryland, Oregon, and South Dakota all have been good
