The Mediterranean diet has many health benefits

Patricia Marie Allen's picture

It's been long known that the Mediterranean diet has many health benefits. People in that part of the world have some of the longest life spans going. Limiting red meat has also been shown to have health benefits. So this isn't really anything new, but merely highlighting the benefits for PTSD sufferers.

The article talks about "plant based" protein. Please don't confuse this with "Plant Based meat substitutes." The chemicals used to make plants taste and look like meat have far more detriments to your health than the red meat it's substituting for.

Stick to real plant based proteins such as nuts, and legumes. Beans and rice combined in a dish have as much and as complete proteins as beef. Do your research to come up with balanced protein plant combinations. It's not something that comes easily to the western mind.

protein, Protein, PROTEIN has been hammered at us for 100+ years

So of course everybody needlessly worries.

It turns out protein is our >very last< worry.

Our first worry is getting enough Vitamin B12. Supplement now.
-
We have to be following some whack-a-doodle diet, have severe physical problems, or burns, surgery, serious injuries, or to be >in starvation< before we don't get enough protein.

Only about 3% of USA people are low on protein - and I'll guess it's mostly living-alone seniors who are simply not eating enough.

Everybody else who is getting enough calories, is getting enough protein.

We eat about >140%< of the protein we need - all that we need, and then 40% extra. This is >regardless of diet<.

As for the replacements for meat, cheeses, milks ...

I'll take my chances, in return for the pleasure provided - and especially for reducing my food-related killing towards zero, reducing some of my environmental harm, a 75% reduction in my food-related Climate Destructive gases ...
-
At the moment, I have a 5-8 oz each package of 'meat'-balls and 'cheese', and 2 liters of soy milk, and liter of coffee creamer in my fridge/freezer. And no animals were harmed. These will last me a week-plus.

And I routinely 'run up' a 5-6 liter batch of veggie soup/stew for the week. Bases include beans, onions, potatoes, (fire roasted) tomatoes, spices, ... And I >might< add in a plant sausage (more likely if I'm sharing it at a pot-luck)

And now - I'm off to shopping :)

They say cows are bad for the environment

All they do is eat plants and pass methane gas....

Kind of like vegans.
