I've tried to google this topic, but it resists discovery.

Does anyone know whether it actually ever happened that policemen -- males, to be clear -- dressed as hookers in order to catch criminals?

It was an occurrence that popped up regularly on TV shows in my childhood -- about as often as someone being stuck in quicksand.

I think it's happened

Google these: police decoys dressed as a girl AND police decoys dressed as women - "In August 1962, New York City cops began patrolling the streets at night while dressed as women. The idea was to trap would-be muggers." - "Byline: By RICHARD SMITH

TEN police officers dressed in drag as "women" decoys to help snare the infamous Clifton Rapist, it emerged yesterday.

After being made up and taking lessons in how to pose as potential victims, the men walked a six mile route prowled by sex predator Ronald Evans."

Also US sitcom Barney Miller aired an episode of this.

In the olden days

Women weren't much employed at police departments and mainly worked inside as glorified office workers, never on the streets. The idea that one of their girls would demean themselves to play a prostitute was unthinkable. So "real" officers (aka men) played those roles. These days, with women on the street, on patrol, pc detectives, etc., it's not hard to recruit female officers for those uc roles.

I was actually recruited to allow the PD to check off a box on the compliance forms. In fact I was a "twofer", not only their token female but also a lesbian - two checkboxes. (There was no checkbox for trans then.) That didn't make life any easier, I was a means to an end, nothing more. Like Rodney Dangerfield, I couldn't get no respect.
