Invisible stories

A couple of times recently a story / chapter page has had everything appear on it, except the actual chapter. All of the comments added have been there, so that I can see what I was missing, which only adds frustration to the mystery. The only recourse was to abandon the link and come back to it hours later. Is it only me (not) seeing this? Other posted items and links work, it isn't a blanket effect on the site.

Invisible Stories and Chapters

No, you're not the only one. Are you accessing it with a tablet or other mobile device? I wonder if that's a factor. Just around the time you were posting this, about a half hour ago, I was trying to access this site with my tablet, and for the second time this week, the stories were all empty, zero bytes. Then just now I accessed it from my computer, and they're working... I don't know.

happened to me, with an odd twist

Using a Win 10 Pro laptop, and it happened to me as well. Only when I went back to the Home Page, I found my parable listed - twice. One was normal, but with the CURRENT TIME as its creation time, and the other was a ZERO WORD story, but with the correct creation time. Just another weird Drupal Easter Egg, I guess. Anyone?

Synching problem

erin's picture

BC is currently running on five servers: three front ends, a caching server and a database server. Sometimes the caching server gets out of synch and is passing incomplete data to one or more of the front ends. We're working on it. It's beginning to look like a configuration problem which may require shutting down the system to completely re-install and re-configure the hardware. We'll keep everyone posted.

Hugs,
Erin

As long as it is a known thing, and not just something I have done.

My Best Guess

What you are encountering is a server side problem. In other words, it is BC creating the problem, not your computer. Your OS has nothing to do with it. For example, I am running Fedora 26 and have encountered the same problem.

BC uses a caching server and a database for the stories. One of the two isn't responding fast enough. I suspect it is the MySQL server not responding fast enough in this case to Drupal's requests for content.

The prior problem of 503s was an adjustment to the caching server trying to render all the PHP bells and whistles while still allowing for dynamic content.

I don't know if anyone noticed, but a part of the header was removed and the 503 problem has stopped for the time being.

Using a cache server is important if there is a heavy load at times. It speeds up the serving of pages on a custom server. But, Drupal doesn't always play nice with a caching server.

What can I say, I used to tune servers. I can understand BC's frustrations.

So, patience. The problem is known and it is being worked on.

It's nature's way of telling you to read an older story

For me it only seems to take out the text of about half of the front page stories.
Last night when it happened I went to my backlog of bookmarked++ stories
and read Maeryn Lamonte's epic masterpiece TO EMBRACE A MERMAID
and tonight if it happens it might be something by Angela Rasch from 2013.
And if I keeps on happening I can always start with Chapter One of BIKE.
Who knows, I might actually live long enough to get caught up.

Bike doesn't take that long to read

I've done it three times and survived the experience. There's also other serials and short stories I've done as well, including SNAFU which is partly on Sapphire's and partly here but is a complete novel.
