If a song could change your gender (by magic) what song do you think could do it?

Maybe this one? You tell me, or better yet find one and share it!

What Is And What Should Never
© By Led Zeppelin

And if I say to you tomorrow,
Take my hand, child, come with me.
It's to a castle I will take you,
Where what's to be, they say will be.

*Catch the wind, see us spin,
Sail away, leave today,
Way up high in the sky.
But the wind won't blow,
You really shouldn't go,
It only goes to show
That you will be mine
By takin' our time. Ooh!

And if you say to me tomorrow,
Oh what fun it all would be,
Then what's to stop us, pretty baby,
But What Is And What Should Never Be.

* Chorus

So if you wake up with the sunrise,
And all your dreams are still as new,
And happiness is what you need so bad,
Girl, the answer lies with you, yeah.

* Chorus

Hey, oh
Oh the wind wont blow and we really shouldn't go
and it only goes to show-ow-ow.
Catch the wind, we're gonna see it spin
we're gonna...sail, little girl
do do do, bop bop a do-oh
my my my my my my yeah
Everybody I know seems to know me well
--but does anybody know I'm gonna move like hell
--but they're never gonna know cause I move like hell.
(pick one...heh)

Musical lyrics?

Well I think it depends upon how they're sung.

I cite Rolf Harris' rendition of the brilliant Led Zep's Stairway to Heaven. Something so ethereal suddenly sounded rather odd to say the least.

Taking that and turning it round the other way, could singing the Communards version of "Don't leave me this way" have the desired effect?

It's kind of lateral thinking, but I tried it earlier and the way my woman looked at me made me wonder... I definitely felt certain things 'lifting'. Perhaps prolonged exposure?

I'll have to try singing it more than once.

If that is a beforre then this is...

If that is a before song then this is a in the middle of it song. When Enterprise was taped in our household (Kathryn and mine) we had a rule that we didn't fast forward thru the opening song when we played it back looking at the episode. And without any further adieu, The theme from Enterprise:

Faith of The Heart
(Theme from Enterprise)

written by Diane Warren and sung by Russell Watson

It's been a long road
Getting from there to here
It's been a long time
But my time is finally near
And I will see my dream come alive at last,
I will touch the sky
And they're not gonna hold me down no more
No, they're not gonna change my mind
Cause I got faith of the heart
I'm going where my heart will take me
I got faith to believe
I can do anything
I got strength of the soul
And no one's gonna bend or break me
I can reach any star
I got faith
I got faith
Faith of the heart...

You can be Anything

laika's picture

Possibly "You can be Anything" by the Epidemics, not the hip-hop group but the early '80's band of the same name. The album jacket's long gone and I couldn't find on the net, but the lyrics are about what you'd expect from the title. It had a sitar, heavy drums, a wistful girl singer, a gentle hopeful inspirational song about being your own true self...
I was looking up songs from the glam era, that was definitely about gender to me (I recall my embarrassment at bringing my 1st Bowie album up to the cashier), and it's nothing to brag about but at the time I was so wasted on drugs I half thought such music could magically change me... But now reviewing these lyrics on line there's something very dark about most of them, they're definitely not the Enterprise theme. Swan Lake?

Queen's "Son and Daughter"

Queen - Son And Daughter lyrics

Tried to be your son and daughter rolled into one
You said you'd equal any man for having your fun
Now didn't you feel surprised to find
The cap just didn't fit?
The world expects a man
To buckle down and to shovel shit
What'll you do for loving
When its only just begun?
I want you to be a woman

Tried to be a teacher and a fisher of men
An equal people preacher
Will you lead us all the same?
Well I travelled all around the world
To find a brand new word for day
Watching the time mustn't linger behind
Pardon me I have to get away
What'll you think of heaven
If it's back from where you came?
I want you to be a woman

Hugs

Frank

I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing

Songs are a reflection of society. A natural response to looking in a mirror is to make minor (and major) changes to improve our image.

Marketeers write jingles because they recognize the power of a song lyric.

Definitely -- a song can change a peron.

change? Perhaps...

... affect, definitely. I'd be surprised if there is a single person that comes here that on hearing anything from a few notes to several bars of 'that' song or piece will not be transported. Weeks, months, decades into the past to relive a moment. Might be happy, might not, but it will be there in detail. Romance to a tune that might be shared by thousands, yet it will always be 'our' song, whatever else may happen. Might not always be logical either. I have one that takes me to a time and place because it captures a mood. But it wasn't written when the events occurred. Mostly though it will be a direct connection and it will have meaning.
Whats that line...' if music be the food of love... play on..' Should be more of it.

What I Am

I'm not aware of too many things
I know what I know, if you know what I mean
Philosophy is the talk on a cereal box
Religion is the smile on a dog
I'm not aware of too many things
I know what I know, if you know what I mean, d-doo yeah

Choke me in the shallow waters
Before I get too deep

What I am is what I am
Are you what you are or what?
What I am is what I am
Are you what you are or

Oh, I'm not aware of too many things
I know what I know, if you know what I mean
Philosophy is a walk on the slippery rocks
Religion is a light in the fog
I'm not aware of too many things
I know what I know, if you know what I mean, d-doo yeah

Choke me in the shallow water
Before I get too deep

What I am is what I am
Are you what you are or what?
What I am is what I am
Are you what you are or what?

What I am is what I am
Are you what you are or what?
What I am is what I am
Are you what you are or what you are and

What I am is what I am
Are you what you are or what?

Don't let me get too deep
Don't let me get too deep
Don't let me get too deep
Don't let me get too deep

Choke me in the shallow water
Before I get too deep
Choke me in the shallow water
Before I get too deep

Choke me in the shallow water
Before I get too deep
Choke me in the shallow water
Before I get too deep

Maybe not for everyone, but to me it is an anthem of the self (so not good for an unwanted change.). Edie Brickell's version is preferred, but it's been done well by others.

Joy,
Jan

Right, Laika

Since the song was written in '76 and she died a quater of a century before that, she might not have heard it often enough for it to take hold.

It's like when the King sang, "I Want to be Your Big, Fat, Banana and P.B. Eatin', Drug Swallowin' Teddy Bear."

Or, when Scooter sang -- oh, pardon me -- Scooter didn't sing, did he?

Running Up That Hill

"If I only could, I'd make a deal with God, and I'd get Him to swap our places."

Reading between the lines.

If you think about it, "If I Ever Leave This World Alive" by Flogging Molly, would fit. Here, read it for yourself.

If I ever leave this world alive
I'll thank for all the things you did in my life
If I ever leave this world alive
I'll come back down and sit beside your
feet tonight
Wherever I am you'll always be
More than just a memory
If I ever leave this world alive

If I ever leave this world alive
I'll take on all the sadness
That I left behind
If I ever leave this world alive
The madness that you feel will soon subside
So in a word don't shed a tear
I'll be here when it all gets weird
If I ever leave this world alive

So when in doubt just call my name
Just before you go insane
If I ever leave this world
Hey I may never leave this world
But if I ever leave this world alive

She says I'm okay; I'm alright,
Though you have gone from my life
You said that it would,
Now everything should be all right

She says I'm okay; I'm alright,
Though you have gone from my life
You said that it would,
Now everything should be all right
Yeah should be alright

Much love.
Toni

Another one...

If you look at the lyrics to "The Dirty Glass" by the Dropkick Murphys, as an internal struggle within the writer's mind.... well take a look and let me know. I've added "()" to signify which persona is speaking.

(Her)Murphy, Murphy, darling dear
(Her)I long for you now night and day
(Her)Your pain was my pleasure, your sorrow my joy
(Her)I feel now I've lost you to health and good cheer

(Him)Darcy, when I met you I was five years too young
(Him)A boy beyond his age, or so I'd tell someone
(Her)Anyone who'd listen and a few who couldn't care
(Her)Still I welcomed you with open arms, my love I did share

[Chorus](both)
Darcy, Darcy darling dear,
You left me dying, crying there
In whiskey, gin, and pints of beer
I fell for you my darling dear

(Him)You shut me off and you showed me the door
(Her)But you always came crawling back begging me for more
(Her)I showed you kindness, a stool, and a tab
(Him)Then you poured me my pain in a dirty glass
(A second Him)Yeah, you left him bloody, battered, penniless, and poor
(Her)You know, I often stopped and wondered how you made it through my door
(Him)With my brother's new non-duplicate registry ID
(Her)Well you bit off more than you could chew the first day you met me.

[Chorus]

(Her)You weren't the first to court me mister you won't be the last
(Him)Oh, I'm sure I wasn't honey, I know all about your past
(Her)Listen to the big shot with his pager on call
(Her)You spent most of those nights in my bathroom stall
(The second Him again)Yeah, you got him high, but you left him low
(Her)Mind your own business, boy, how was I to know
(Her)That he was just a fiend and a no-good cheat
(Him)Well it's all in the past bitch 'cause now I've got it beat.

[Chorus x4]

(Her)My dear, my dear
(Him)Darcy, Darcy my darling dear.

Much Love.
