A Giant

He was a giant. For me, his finest performance was in 'Jack'.

I was surprised to learn that he did the voice-over for Dr Know in AI. Any actor associated with that film will always have my undying gratitude.

Ban nothing. Question everything.

Mork

I hope they return his ashes to Ork . Another sad day lost a truly great actor R I P Mr. Williams :(

I read the news today, oh boy...

Like Johnathan Winters and Peter Sellers, he had a mind that jumped from theme to theme, creating weird comic juxtapositions at damn near the speed of light.

Good Morning Vietnam. Popeye. Hook. That uncredited voice role in AI (but you could basically tell it was him...). The whimsical tortured grail quester Perry in Terry Gilliam's FISHER KING, and I think he was in another Gilliam film, something about a greek god whose head came off and flew around the room. The wacky blue Genie in Aladdin. He was pretty good as the psych ward doctor in Awakenings. He played a pretty convincing gay "straight man" to Nathan Lane's histrionics in The Birdcage. And was excellently creepy yet touching as the lonely misfit in ONE HOUR PHOTO; where he went: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AaQqfEsVt4

very sad indeed. He was a

very sad indeed. He was a funny soul, and he will bring laughter to the heavens above. He will be missed.

A great loss

He was perhaps my favorite actor.... but suicide? i.. have trouble believing it.

After "What dreams may come"... it's very hard to accept he killed himself, it would be very twisted irony.

~Your only Limitation is your Imagination~

Depression can't be seen with the naked eye.

There is no way to make sense of severe depression unless you've experienced it yourself. There are no outward signs, no bruises, no cuts, no welts. All the damage is inside the head of the sufferer. The feelings of worthlessness, loneliness inside a crowd, the demon voice in your head that tells you there is only one way to end your suffering, that no one loves you and you won't be missed. It goes on and on, a never ending whispering in your head. Meds help, but there really isn't a 'fix' for it. You learn to live with it, with the help of family, of other sufferers. But you relapse, fall back into that pit of darkness, and sometimes, climbing back out again is just too hard. In Robin's case, as we've all found out, sometimes the demons win.

Unhinging Your Mind

Jonathan Winters (Robin's mentor) often spoke about his best comedy happening when he was able to "unhinge" his mind. He said it was dangerous because sometimes he would totally lose control and then bad things happened.

As writers we dabble in the area of the absurd. We attempt to take the ludicrous and preposterous and set it in a world where it all makes sense. That's what makes our fiction interesting.

Years ago I tried to get inside Robin William's mind for a story.

Perhaps it was trying to understand him that pushed me to write what I consider my best piece on this site.

A PLEA, Again

My favorite role of his is of Jacob in Jacob the Lier. His character risked his life so others would have hope. Then he died so othe might live. Also his doctors roles in Awakening and Patch Adams are also high on my list.

Robin Williams was a great actor who apparently died of suicide.

If you are often depressed or have contemplating suicide or are contemplating suicide PLEASE, I BEG YOU, make a pledge to live. Make it a vow.

If you know someone who is contemplating suicide or is often depressed demand that person will pledge to continue to live and will not purposefully end his or her life. Demand it as a vow.

The only good thing I have ever done is to hold a few pledges.

A Jewish concept: If you save a life it is as if you have saved the world.

Dead Poet's Society

Dead Poet's Society was my absolute favorite with Robin Williams; among others. Hopefully he's in a better place where he can truly embrace the philosophy of carpe diem.
