Discovered while leafing through a copy of Web User, a free website which analyses a chunk of text (ideally 200+ words) and reports back on various technical aspects of your writing:

  • Overused Words
  • Sentence Variation
  • Sticky Sentences
  • Cliches & Redundancies
  • Repeated Words & Phrases
  • Phrases Summary
  • Diction
  • Vague & Abstract Words
  • Complex Words
  • Alliteration Analysis
  • Pacing
  • Dialog
  • Homonyms

It only accepts raw text and (based on feeding it Petra and The Genie) tends to be extremely pedantic, but some may derive some benefit from it...

What I'm missing on that page is any information about who they are and what they are doing with your texts.

As far as I can tell...

...they don't store your text. The analyse button runs some javascript code which calls on the writing analyser service which is sitting on the IIS webserver. The service is treated as another class of code, so it pipes your text to the service, which then spits back the analysis.

The analyser appears to be the work of a single person, who claims two 'net authors use it, and has a related Twitter account.

The website was built by an outfit called Orpheus Technology Limited (based in Brighton, UK) who subcontract the design work to an outfit called "Dsign2Media".

As I mentioned, it is very pedantic, so it may be best to play with some old texts or early drafts. You'll probably end up justifying your use of almost everything it calls you out on anyway...

It seems

to be very broken when it comes to decent fiction writing.
