It's perhaps a bit early, but I just received confirmation from Social Security that I will be receiving retirement benefits starting next month. Actually, this month, but they won't actually pay me until April.

It's kind of a bittersweet situation. Those with whom I've shared know that I have been out of work and looking for about three years now. It's frustrating for someone with my experience to be passed over. My resume (CV) is impressive, perhaps too much so.

I doubt that my lack of employment has anything to do with my T status. It is plain and simple age discrimination. Companies are not supposed to discriminate, but when you have thirty year's experience with the same company and graduated college in the seventies, they know you're no spring chicken.

Enough grousing. At least now Denise and I can afford a real apartment and move out of the back of the church. Better than on the streets, especially as this rainy season has been one of the heaviest in decades, but not really home.

Thanks to all here who have provided counsel and sympathetic shoulders. We're here for you, too.

Wow that hits home.

Just last year, my father was ‘laid off’ by the company he'd worked the past 14 years supporting. Turns out they wanted to hire away another man from a competing company, and needed the space.

That was a lot of heartache for a 61-year-old man who had lost a big part of his self-identity. I'm glad I was able to help him—and I'm sorry I missed your sharing earlier.

Congrats and good luck in your future.

Well, now you can have the fun of donating time to the Church as well as going to college and taking a fun course.
