Time of the Year

I hate this time of the year because its so damn cold. I live in Western New York, just north of Buffalo. From the beginning of October and all the way to April sometimes, the weather here is absolutely frigid. It's horrible. The worst part is that its not consistent. One day it will be nice, sunny and sixty and the next day it could be freezing and thirty five. I've lived in this area all my life and you'd think it would get easier over the years but it doesn't.

The worse part is when it snows. I live in a cul-de-sac and the damn plow puts all the snow from the street into my driveway and my front lawn. It takes me hours to shovel all of it. Sometimes we get more than a foot of snow, its nuts.

So if there's anyone who's never had a white Christmas they should definitely come to the Buffalo area because as soon as they do they'll never wish for a white Christmas again.

Thanks for listening to my rant. Now I've got to get back to writing Chapter 13 and trying to figure how to do it while wrapped in a blanket.

Those and a nice toque will keep you warm!

Perhaps not the fashion statement you were looking for, but it'll work :)

Three layered coats

Enemyoffun's picture

I bought a three layered winter coat a couple of years ago because unfortunately I'm outside a lot in the winter. I have two dogs, both of which love to play in the snow. That and there's lots of shoveling to do.

Take Heart

I think your feeling's are perfectly normal. I "did" seven years in Massachusetts, going to school. Now I'm a California girl. More A Southern Cali girl who is used to warmth.

Now here's the oxymoron of life. I find myself longing for the cold sometimes. The feeling in the air; the crispness of the first weather just before the first snow fall. If you give up Buffalo for SoCal You WILL get to a point of WHY did I move?? Massachusetts claims their weather is the most changeable of any! The people there think I'm crazy because I wanted to move back to California. "How can you LIVE without for seasons.

I just smile.

Such are the mysteries of life when it comes to weather. ROFLMAO.

Hang in there! Blessings to you,

Beth

I agree

I'm a So Cal gal too. The weather is one of the major reasons I moved here 11 years ago. I have no desire to live anywhere else, even despite the occasional earthquake. Hugs and love, Cindy

You could always...

...flog the snow on Ebay...(!)

Then again, snow isn't the strangest thing that's been sold on Ebay... Eurotunnel once auctioned off one of their tunnel boring machines (used to dig the chunnel) - a 580 tonne monster. Oh, it also had the stipulations of buyer collect and no returns. Unsurprisingly, rather than a museum or eccentric engineering fan, it was bought by a scrap metal company.

Boring

Yup, it was on show by the M20 for years with the sign "For Sale,One Careful Owner"

The snow thing....I was being driven back to my apartment in Clifton, near Cairns, many years ago after a day out at the Great Barrier Reef. The driver's accent intriguedme, and when he said "aboat" I realised he was a Canadian.Turned out he was from Calgary. What the hell was he doing in North Queensland?

"I just had one too many mornings getting up and having to dig the car oat..."

Edited to add: I noticed this in the report from Wrexham: "Ian and Jim Gaffney run the One Planet mountain biking centre at Coed Llandegla, which is 11,000 feet up on the moors and has been snowbound and unable to open since December 20."
I really think I would have noticed a mountain there three times the height of Yr Wyddfa....

Yeah, I admit it

I do like a white Christmas. The day after Christmas, though, Spring can start, and I would be fine. You have the same problem as I do here in Michigan-we are too dang close to big freshwater lakes. When the wind comes down off Lake Michigan, it can get downright interesting!
I know what you mean about the consistency, too. When I worked at the Truck stop, we would get people come in complaining about the heat, and a week later, that same person would come in and gripe about the cold. It seems a big snow is almost always preceded by warmth-almost like an apology. "Sorry we have to ruin your week, have a comfy day to get ready for it."
When I was a driver, I had the Buffalo to Chicago Run for a ladder company. Soooo much fun in the winter.
I wish I could answer Little Katie's request for a friend in Tampa. I really do!

Florida

Why do you think I moved to south Florida 20 years ago someone has to live here then I moved to north central Florida because it got to be to hot in the deep south or north Cuba

Strange...

I used to enjoy living up there - more or less. I went to Uni in Rochester, and then almost eight years later, my older daughter was born there (in the mid of winter - with light snow outside)...

Hope you've a nice warm place to "hide" when it's really cold/damp out side.

Rochester

Enemyoffun's picture

Its somewhat different where I live. Yes Rochester is still cold but we get hammered by snow. My brother just graduated from Brockport, which is really close to Rochester but he didn't nearly as much snow as we did.

Don't get me wrong I enjoy living where I live its just that the winters can be kind of miserable. On the cold days here, I like to stay inside and write.

I'm so getting the Brrr.

I'm Canadian, and here on the Tantramar marsh area, in Southern New Brunswick I'm just off the ocean it's cold. Even now it's cold. It's hovered around freezing the last five days or so, we've already seen light dustings of snow. Add it the Bay of Fundy on one side of us and The Northumberland Straight on the other and there's a real sickening dampness that's here in the air that doesn't fade really despite the wind chill or how cold it gets.
That's the killer here. It's not the cold, because a dry cold I could handle. it's that dampness with the wind chill that hits you so hard up here.
Lake effect weather doesn't have nothing on the ocean's effects, we get a lot, of snow. We get feet of snow.
I so feel your pain. Back pain, wrist pain, aching fingers and toes.

Snow

The weather service in my area is predicting a possibility of snow tonight...I guess all I can to do is groan and wait to see what happens.

I feel your pain.

I live in mid Michigan, just south of Cadillac. We have better than a tenth of a mile of driveway. Fortunately, we have a 4WD Yukon now, so getting out won't be near as much of a problem. Still, a cold house and hip deep snow is a pain. I want to be a snowbird when I grow up.

WNY

I live in western ny as well. I live in a small town called cherry creek. It's about an hour and 15 minites south of buffalo. Lousy winter. Why can't it just stay fall forever. I like fall.

Lockport

I live in Lockport...our weather is bad but the Southern Tier gets pounded...I definitely don't envy you. I like Spring the best, give me 65-70 degree weather all year round and I'd be a happy camper.

Niagara County, NY

I know Lockport. I used to have relatives near there in Youngstown. I never visited in Winter, but it was beautiful the rest of the year.

Very beautiful

Its one of those places that very few people know about. Though there's not much to do in the city itself there are a lot of places nearby to drive too. But if anyone likes the Erie Canal than I suppose there's something to look at there.

I'm not that far from Jessica, In Jamestown.

We don't get quite as much snow here as they do in the county seat, Mayville, but we DO get snow. Mayville, last year, posted 225 inches of snow, mostly thanks to the "Lake Effect".

Us Western New Yorkers do get used to all that white stuff, but there comes a time, as ageing catches up with us, that it changes from being pretty, to being a royal pain in the ass and something dangerous to our health. Granted, slippery roads are dangerous to everybody's health, though.

Too bad all us WNYers couldn't get together for a confab sometime. It seems like there's quite a few of us. I gotta be in Buffalo next week on Wednesday, for a confab with my endo at the VA Hospital, but will be without a car, since I take the Vets Shuttle up and back. Most of the time, since the day is supposed to be in the 60s temp-wise, I'll be in the back parking area, where the smokers hang out, and the busses pick up and drop off, if anyone wants to meet.

No Snow

Enemyoffun's picture

So I lucked out. There was a chance of it snowing after midnight but as far I know we didn't get any. If there was any, it melted before I woke up.
