Contests:

Okay, to make a long story short, my pc was taken out by a worm that f'ed up the bios controls that then fried my processor and motherboard and took out the hard drive too that had all my contest stuff on it. It was a Russian worm that they dont have a commercial means of removing yet. And it came from an anime site and I had used the vivaldi browser. Because of the way vivaldi worked, the browser let stuff load before it blocked it. Well, live and learn. Im using Firefox plain and simple. No more Chrome.

I will have to contest winnings up Wednesday afternoon. Erin and myself will disperse payments then.

I apologize totally from the bottom of my heart for making you all wait. The snowstorm yesterday prevented me from picking up the pc then since Best Buy was closed. I got it today and i was exhausted from the ordeal of snow clearing to the car and removing the snow from said car and picking up the pc and bank stuff.

So let me rest tonight and tomorrow tackle the contest task :)

Time for a second device?

to be used for NSFW (Not Safe For Work) type content?
You could make it such that after using it, you restore the OS etc therefore wiping out any nasties that the [cough][cough] dubious content browsing might pick up. It does not have to be a powerful system and a used one would do the job well.

just a thought...

Virtual PC?

BarbieLee's picture

I know it's a lot slower. Are we going to need to go to a virtual PC to keep the virus's at bay? So far I've been more than fortunate. If I notice anything different when I touch a web site, I immediately back out if my HD starts running. Provided it stays lit after, I either hit a Sticky Site, or I touched a virus and I shut down the PC. So far I have escaped but one of these days I won't as the initial couple seconds gives whatever time to set itself up to complete the virus load.
Last week a popup from McAfee kept appearing on my PC informing me I had three viruses. I needed to click on the popup for McAfee to clean my computer. You betchu Red Rider, I'll do just that! Ran my virus scanners and that included MS virus scan, registry cleaner, and the Popup was still there. A power out hard reboot, I didn't tell it to reboot, I unplugged my computer. Didn't want whatever it was to embed itself on a soft reboot as everything is saved at the time one calls for a reboot. Unplug and the computer loses everything not saved.. And I'm clean again.

For all the lost programs, hours people have put into their work and it's wiped because of some malicious code. I pray those who write and post such rot in Hell. I forgive mistakes and didn't knows but when they do it maliciously, not a chance for forgiveness.

PS: The worst virus I ever got was one I gave myself. Reformatting my HD didn't get rid of it. I had to low level format to finally kill the thing. Wish I could have sent that puppy back to those who write viruses. And no I didn't let it escape back out into the wild.

Mirror your HD's hon. DON'T CLONE. If you clone when one is infected, both are infected. Or at least save everything you do to two jump drives and mirror them at the end of the day, pull one and don't forget to mirror at the end of each day, or forget to keep one safe. A few minutes each day can save a world of pain. Make a USB reboot, reinstall everything on your PC and keep it up to date.

What virus might this have

What virus might this have been? I haven't heard of anything similar to that in the last couple of years, at a minimum. with UEFI overtaking BIOS for CMOS start OS, it's (normally) a bit harder for malware to nuke the board.

Glad you're back and working again.

I'll get a life when it's proven and substantiated to be better than what I'm currently experiencing.
