Sunday is the big day - Super Shopping Day! Typical conversation Sunday afternoon:

"Honey, I've got the checkbook and credit cards, I'm going to the mall."

"Shush! Pregame just started! Tell me later."

"Okay, see ya."

"Hey, if you're going out grab some beer and snacks."

Superbowl Sunday is a great day to go to the Magic Kingdom. :) Less so than it used to be since now all the locals know about it and lots of women and teenage girls have a girls day out in the park.

Hugs,
Erin

It's that what Oates said to Cpt Scott in Antarctica?

I thought that's what the dying man said as we walked out to his death, Still didn't save Scott the idiot. The qoute is according to Scott's journal as he and the rest were peoplecicles when the rescue team found them. Still didn't save Scott the idiot.

John in Wauwatosa

not only but also

my great-great uncle Edgar pegged it on that expedtion (my spelling may be a little squiff, I've been singing down the pub)

Scott was not an Idiot

John,
I've actually seen Ccotts cabin in Mcmudro sound, Antarctica. I spent a year in the Antarctic in 1972-1973. Going outside is relatively safe excep;t when it gets real cold and windy. then one wears the proper attire and merrily heads out the door.
I've seen it get down to minus 150 degrees with no wind and I've seen it get even lower than that with wind. Scott and his men did nothave enough rations to get them through an Antarctic winter.
I now atend a reunion every two years with the sailors and scientist I was on the ice with. It certainly makes Minnesota and Wisconsin look like summer resorts in the winter time.

England Vs Wales

Angharad's picture

Is always a huge fixture, with all sorts of tribal elements too. Wales have not won at Twickenham (the home of Rugby Union) for 20 years. At the end of the first half, it looked as if that was going to remain the status quo. The second half Wales got better and England fell apart. England effectively snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, which made 3,000,000 inhabitants of these islands, very happy. I am one of them. 8-D

But I'm hoping they'll be sad next week end, although I wish them well tomorrow.

If the USA thinks ...

... it's at the top of the world's dislike list, they should try being English. We were there for a long time and still are in the UK :)

What happened at Twickenham anyway?

Geoff

Byrne Baby Byrne

Went in at half time with the pundits predicting a 50 point victory for England, but Wales came back out fired up. At the hour mark Wales were still thirteen points adrift - clawed back three for a penalty, followed by a two minute, two try blitz to make it 20 answered points, and then pinned England in their own 22 for most of the remaining time... dreadful for the nerves, but an amazing victory :)

Ceri ...

... it was a rhetorical question ;) We take the Observer, not that the so-called sport section has much of any sport that interests me (cycling or sailing)

Geoff

A little encouragement .....

.... is what they need. The Welsh, the poor dears, such a dreadful inferiority complex! They have lost for so long and so consistently that there were genuine worries about their ability to sustain the minimal level of mental health necessary to eke out an existence in the Valleys.

The charitable instincts of the English being internationally revered it was decided to ask them to make some small sacrifice. Well it was either us or the Samaritans and as the latter are not known for their Rugby playing prowess the choice was a simple and straightforward one. How to do it without offending Celtic sensitivities was the only problem. Accordingly we decided to start withdrawing players using injury as an excuse. This continued throughout the first half without having the desired effect, so in the second we more or less stopped playing altogether apart from kicking the ball to them on every available occasion so that they could practice running around with it.

It is called sportsmanship and one does feel a just a little glow of pride in belonging to a nation who still retain the innate ability to put the happiness of others, however unworthy they may be, before their own.

Should anyone for a moment doubt this truth, one has only to read the comments above to see how how success has crowned our efforts. All happiness is alas transitory, particularly amongst the Welsh, but to grant to others even a few hours of bliss must surely be worthwhile.

Heart warming indeed!

what's in it for us?

'sportsmanship' is such a nebulous concept, entirely contrived to subvert the Welsh's natural cunning, and tenacity (we are after all outnumbered twenty to one, and shorter than everybody). That's not to mention its shortcomings, take the film 'Zulu' for example....

Michael Caine's character wants to go out and face their attackers in the open, playing fields of Eton yada yada yada, every body dead.

Stanley Baker's character takes the far more pragmatic, Welsh approach of staying out of the way of pointy sticks, and having a good sing whilst doing so.

You know it makes sense to do things our way (we've got even better tunes than the Devil). :)

Flawed Example

Michael's Caine's character was the officer commanding the detachment of 24th Regiment of Foot or South Wales Borderers.

But Stanley Baker's character was a Royal Engineer. He came to build a bridge and just happened to be the senior officer because his commission pre-dated Caine's. He had no connection with Wales whatsoever.

I grant you that the Welsh can sing though. Quite beautifully. Which is another reason for encouraging them to win. And they may possess more than their fair share of low cunning too so it is conceivable that they just took advantage of our good nature. But it is the thought that matters and their deceit cannot detract from the commendable spirit of good fellowship inherent in our actions.
