So………, apparently……….

Someone thinks I should try writing a story, and thank you JoanneBarbarella, I am flattered. I know this is in conjunction with the recent blog about trying to get new authors involved here, and I truly am stunned that anyone would approach me.

I could be blunt and say, “I couldn’t write my way out of a paper bag”, or something to that effect, lol. But I can write - just not fiction. Give me a contract, or a prospectus, a technical report or a presentation, hell - I even write great letters, but not fiction. Although some of my co-workers might tell you that a few of the proposals we have written over the years were just slightly tinged with fiction, lol.

Over the years, like most students, I was required to write a number of stories - and although mechanically I always did well, I simply am incapable of making up a worthwhile story line. I cannot even begin to tell you how many times I had an instructor tell me that!

But having said that, I did promise to think about it………

And maybe, just maybe, even try once again.

Art

Art is something practiced, never entirely mastered (well, except for Erin?). If you want to try your hand, this is a friendly place. But some people are not cut out to be artists: I once saw a set of wedding photos and concluded that some police department was missing the services of a quite perceptive forensic photographer.

Likewise

I used to write lots of dry... no make that very, very dry technical documents. Want to install an Unix Server Cluster running Oracle Parallel Server (that dates me) then I had a 200+ page guide on how to do it plus all sorts of scripts to help you out.
Translate that to 2023... want to build a Rocky Linux Wordpress Server? Then I have the goods for you (needs merging).

It took me a long time to be able to switch almost at will from writing dry stuff for the day job to writing fiction. Go for it girl.
Why not make it your new years resolution? You could even enter the competition... :)

Exactly right!

I spent thirty years doing technical writing. Duets was my first attempt at fiction since I was forced to write it in high school. And honestly, Dallas, given your life experience, I don’t think you’ll have trouble finding a story line!

Practice

Erisian's picture

Like any skill, it takes practice - the more you write, the better you get! And the only way therefore to GET better...is to do it and keep doing it!

You know, like our prodigiously prolific example of Emma Anne Tate has done! She just keeps getting better and better...

Art, and Wedding photo's?

Hi Blogger. Catheard must have been looking at My wedding photo's.
It was a very windy day, and we had hired a Top Press photographer.
We were taking the inside photo's and my hair was all over the place.
He didn't have the sense to get me to comb it. They were crystal clear
and in focus. But it looked as if I had just got out of bed. That's life as they say.

Dry Reports

Were part of my chores for fifty years. Actually, you're wrong that nobody enjoys reading them. If what you write is what your employer wants to hear they love you. If you disagree with their wishes they hate you and often never employ you again. Some lawyers in particular, just want you to be a hired gun. Sorry, that wasn't me. I was lucky enough to have some employers/clients who wanted to be told the truth. I actually saved them time and money if they weren't going to win.

As someone else said, there is only one way to get better, and that takes practice. But you have to start!

Dallas posts very insightful and intuitive comments. If that doesn't show untapped talent I don't know what does. She's selling herself short.

Remember Robert The Bruce.

Your Reason For Writing...

I wonder if my writing is simply a narcissistic expression of personal pain. I jealously note that some of the writers here write stories that become very popular, getting several hundred kudos. I don't seem to be able to find that combination but I mostly have fun. :)

Only natural

to want some gratification via kudos.
As long as you are enjoying your writing (even if if some of it is complete rubbish (we all do it)) then carry on. When it becomes a chore then take a break.
I pretty well wrote myself out in November with over 50K words typed into the computer. I'm not looking to any writing other than some editing and organising my backlog for 2024.
