SecondShelf Test Site

Audience Rating:

Bob Arnold has prepared a test site for making sure that BC will run without problems on a new server with updated infrastructure software (LAMP). Please, take a look, read a few stories there and help us test it. You can't create new accounts there and only editors can post new material because new posts at SecondShelf will all go away when we re-install it later in the week. If you find problems, come back here to TopShelf and PM me or Bob. :)

If you're getting multiple logins then do one of two things:
     1) Don't click the remember me box. Or
     2) Add 2ndShelf to your safelist in your browser because you're asking for cookies and then not accepting them.

Yes, we know some of the images are not showing up and we disabled some of the ads. :)

Here's the URL: SecondShelf.

Comments

Please help us test the new setup Out?

and give the test site a spin for reading and leaving comments and posts? We really do need to know if the setup will handle the load we are expecting. Its much better to find the kinks now rather than later on the fly.

Thank You

Right now, only edtors can

erin's picture

Right now, only edtors can post or comment on 2ndShelf. Posting the stories that have appeared on TopShelf since 2ndShelf was created yesterday would probably be a good trial if any editors want to help us out there. Don't worry about maybe duplicating stories, 2ndShelf posts will go away when we reload from TopShelf later in the week.

Eventually, 2ndShelf will probably be a full-time mirror of TopShelf for times when TS is down or inaccessible.

Home again home again jiggity jig

The "Home" link at the top of the page on 2ndshelf links back to the TopShelf front page.

Um, nope?

erin's picture

At least, I can't get it to behave that way.

Hrm

Edeyn Odd. It's not doing it now. Wonder why it did that only once and then reverted? Could it have been an odd browser error, you think? Random errors mess with my head.

Randomness

erin's picture

They do it on purpose. :) Remember, the universe is out to get you. :)

Yeah, I hate crap like that too. I can figure out a way it could happen but it seems like we'd need two or three more planets and an extra moon or two. :)

Couldn't access the Inbox

Hi, site worked well for what I tried, except I was not authorized to view my Inbox. Also, when I went to my Profile, I was notified that I had two persistent logins. This all may be expected behavior, so it's not a big deal.

Hugs, Jaclyn

Browser problem

erin's picture

If you have a browser with a safelist for who it accepts cookies from, this problem can happen. You login, you ask for a cookie, the server hands you a cookie, you drop it and ask for another, the server will keep handing them out until the browser says yes, i have a cookie or you try to do something that requires a cookie like access your account. Then you get a message saying someone stole your cookie so your booted. It's simple but confusing. :)

But it's a browser config problem, not a server problem.

Hugs,
Erin

Had that happen

The stolen cookie thing has happened to me with both IE6 and Firefox. I just logged back in and no problem. Oh, that's on this site, not the new one.

Yup

erin's picture

That's just a dropped or expired cookie, really. Some browsers allow you to set mandatory expiration times for cookies which can also trigger that "stolen" cookie message.

Spot on

Thanks Erin, I deleted a few cookies and restarted Firefox and the list looks normal now!

Seems to load A-Ok

Seemed to work well, maybe faster than BC but I imagine the number of connections at one time was far less.

Tried some of the links from one story to antother and they worked. So far so good.

Browser Versions

I saw Sepharena's post on the second shelf saying about IE 6 being 'outdated'. I understand the problems with doing this because I program websites for a living, but saying this is a bit odd to me. I mean I went and looked up a ex-clients website with okay traffic.

Out of ~4,000 unique visits in december

IE 7 = 40.6%
IE 6 = 40.3%

Firefox 2.X (mostly 2.0.0.11) = 9.4%
Firefox 1.X = 0.6%

Depending if the demographic of big closet is similar, ignoring IE 6 would stop over a third of visitors from posting.

Agreed

I turned off and disconnected a new computer I bought this summer with Vista Home Basic on it because of IE7. I've disabled automatic updates and will continue to use IE6 as long as I can keep an XP machine running. In fact, I'm getting my late father's Dell desktop as a backup just to make sure I can go as long as possible.

FF

Firefox rocks ^_^

but then again thats just a personal opinion, I just love tabbed browsing and bookmarks toolbar! Whenever I used IE 7 I was never very impressed and IE 6 is like pulling teeth to me now because it doesnt have tabs (where you can just scroll wheel click on a link and it comes up in a new tab).

Aw-w-w - but . . .

That's the part I don't like! :) I've tried making it look and act like IE6, with no luck. And I disabled the scroll wheel click button on my mouse as I was always clicking on something I didn't want to click on.

If IE6 isn't going to work with the new BC, that is going to affect my continued presence here.

Site issues

ALL USERS PLEASE READ!

Erin and I have only just begun to explore the issues involved in the next generation of BCTS. We are NOT currently eliminating support for ANY but the most outdated of web browsers (IE4 and IE5 and a few other older Linux based browsers).

To say right now that we are not going to support IE6 is simply NOT TRUE until we know much more about newer versions of our operating system and possible upgrades to Drupal.

If you'll all settle down and LET US determine what's possible and what isn't we'd appreciate it.

If I had known the impending firestorm that the simple act of testing a new OS was going to involve Erin and I would have simply kept it all a secret.

Thanks
Bob Arnold

I didn't mean to 'firestorm'

I didn't mean to 'firestorm' anyone and don’t personally see how it would be considered as such, I just saw Sephrena say "IE-6 , being outdated, is not recommended to be used with BC 2ndShelf Test Server and is not useful to try and debug." and gave some figures as to why it might not be the best idea to rule it out quite yet.

I’m sorry if this caused offence.

Not the problem

erin's picture

There's nothing about 2nd Shelf that is different that would effect the browser. When I opened topshelf, we had these problems until people adjusted their browser settings. And IE7 didn't exist then. :)

IE-6

erin's picture

Well, if you ask MS, they'll tell you that IE6 is outdated. :) But there's no reason it can't work with 2ndShelf, it's just that I don't have a machine running IE6 right now and can't tell you what cookie settings need to be set. But that part of 2ndShelf is NOT different from TopShelf, what works at TS should work at 2S, it's your browser figure out how it works. The setting is either in security or privacy and it had to be set right for TS to work.

Hugs,
Erin

I'm surprised people say

I'm surprised people say that IE is still so big; most people I know of use Firefox and a few opera; but I know few I would call real teckies well enough to ask them such a personal question -- except the friendly ones that run this place :). What are the problems with these browsers that would lead anyone to avoid them and stick with MS?

I jumped around poking buttons and all worked well with in my tolerances (which is the extent of my ability to analyze a site) except that I got a black screen just long enough to scare me before some pages opened. (Now I'm getting that here too. Is this new, or perhaps I just never paid attention before?)

"There are currently 310 users and 13 guest on line." That would be strange - something with the cookie problem?

Firefox

Edeyn I think is a bad browser. It constantly crashes, and some of the ways it operates annoy or aggravate me. I use FlashPeak's SlimBrowser at home -- I use IE-7 at work because I'm not allowed to change the browser. But Firefox, while I know several people that swear by it, isn't as broad and encompassing as Mozilla would like you to think.

Edeyn Hannah Blackeney

FF

Yeah but then again it all just boils down to personal preference.

I use Firefox because it is more secure than IE (i.e. it doesnt get hi-jacked as much). However my main gripe about it is that it is quite alot slower to start Firefox than it is to start IE 6 (not tried 7 on my own comp).

Now sometimes i think it might be because Norton Anti-Virus slows down my computer so much on startup. Anyone know any good virus scanning programs that i can use instead ? ^_^

Good & Free

AVG Free. Quite highly rated, nice, easy updates and it's FREE!
http://www.grisoft.com/

You'll have to do some poking around, they'd rather sell the fancier version, but you'll find it eventually. I don't have the exact link on this computer, I normally download the latest version on my laptop at a wifi or network highspeed point. As my Norton subs expire I'm replacing it with AVGFree, had it on my laptop for almost two years now.

Current Testing Between 3 Browsers Shows

With Peristant Logging Tracking On:

Our current testing by Editors and myself has shown that Firefox 2.0.0.11 allows logins perfectly without any cookie problems using default settings. No urls were needed to allow exceptions. Menus show and movability isnt affected.

Internet Explorer version 6 has logging problems that are not resolvable with placing the url inside the privacy, trusted site list, and block pop up menus. IE-6 , being outdated, is not recommended to be used with BC 2ndShelf Test Server and is not useful to try and debug.

IE-7 earlier was working with the browser protected Mode set down from Medium-High to Medium & The Trusted Site Security Level Setting down from Medium High to Medium. That worked earlier. Further testing will need to be coordinated between Bob Erin, various editors and myself.

This update is also being pasted inside BC Topshelf as well.

Running IE-7

From work, through a Firewall (though not much of one) with the security set to Medium High works fine. Though, set at High it's blocked as an "Adult Content" site.

Part 165

of "As Easy As Falling Off A Bike"

my personal foray...

I saw multiple instances of Karen J and and odd number of users and guests when I hopped on the page, but it smoothed out once I had logged in as me.

Looks nice and I hope it works out well!

Oddly enough...

When I logged out, I saw the same thing [shrugs]. Oh well, growth pains are a normal part of life.

Yep

I tried to tweak my settings to make IE6 work, with no luck. Guess I'll have to be patient and wait.

My testing on Second Shelf

Greetings,

I tested on Second Shelf. I compared the stories I authored that I accessed with my author's story list details of hits and they were reflected. I also voted for some of my stories and that was reflected in the author's story list details. I noticed a delay in some of my graphics loading but that could be due to the fact that instead of loading the graphics from the same server as second shelf is located, that they are loading from the original topshelf in my author graphics area.

    Good News

    erin's picture

Bob has discovered how to tune TopShelf so it is much less likely to crash!!! Like, amazing way of reducing the load on the server by about 70%-90%!!!! YIKES!

Anyway, this makes development of SecondShelf much less urgent. Thanks to everyone who helped us test it and we're going to keep it up and working in it as a test bed of new ideas but it just isn't front burner anymore. Whew!

    Hugs,
    Erin
