Los Angeles to House Transgendered Inmates Separately at City Jail, Offer Hormone Treatments

This seems like a progressive step. However will there be complaints from those undergoing or completed MtF transitions on Not being housed with the other women and vise versa for FtM transitioners?

What to you think?

I think it's good.

I think it's the best way to go. Would you want to be housed with other women? You'd probably face a lot of bigotry from your fellow inmates. That can be very dangerous in a prison setting.

We are making headway this year. First Miss Universe, then

the rest of the cosmos. America is supposed to be the land of the free and the home of brave. Our soldiers are given less than they deserve, and we are being given some rights we have been fighting for.

I have said over 40 years ago that it is about time our government listened to the people. It may just be happening right now...maybe.

"With confidence and forbearance, we will have the strength to move forward."

"If I have to be this girl in me, Then I have the right to be."

Well, It makes sense

The big thing with American society is we tend to be more revenge oriented in our justice system. Perhaps by giving people more respect and maybe even helping these prisoners out they may change their ways. So if separating TG inmates and perhaps go so far as helping them with their hormone therapy, maybe the additional compassion may help prevent reoccurances

However, I just hope that this would give TGs more reason to commit crimes, particularly if the treatments are paid for by the government.

I have mixed feelings

I have mixed feelings on this one...

What kind of transgender person (using what definition - WPATH's or GLAAD's) being just one of them... How long term it is, is another.

As I read the article, for the most part, it seems to assume M2F... But, as worded, they could house an M2F and an F2M together... Or a cross dressing man, who refused to say he was a man, or...

It's an improvement from putting them into Solitary - for their protection. For the M2F, it's a major improvement from putting them in with the Guys...

For what it's worth, if you're diagnosed TS you will be housed in the section of jails with your "target" gender as opposed to assigned gender (assuming the law is followed and you have your carry letter with you)... etc.

what crap is this?

They are criminals and have given up the right to any special treatment. All I can see here is tg people who are unable to afford treatments commiting crimes so they can get them in prison.
On the other hand it might rehabilitate a few but I doubt it will fix the problem.

Yeah, special treatment...

Like not being a hen in cockhouse, or receiving prescribed medication for treating a legitimate medical concern. Oh, wait... Every other criminal gets that...

I find it ...

I find it hard to believe that many would commit a crime to get about three (3) days in that prison... (They go to a "standard" jail after the short time there.

And - go to jail to get your treatment? I find that hard to believe as well. Perhaps a very small number of very desperate people might... But not many.

I'd have thought

Angharad's picture

the number of transgender criminals is relatively small, most of the people I know are very honest and law abiding. However, I can see there could be problem if someone is convicted of something as to where to put them. Is this the answer, I suppose it's an improvement on the purely retributive system used in the US.

Alright, now I know how to do it!

I need to move to LA and commit a crime so I can be sent to city jail! Let the taxpayers pay for my transition. Sounds like an excellent plan to me!

...

not!
