My first reaction when I come onto the Home Page is:

  1. I look at the 8 New Posts and click on any that appear interesting. I may even click on the More to see what else users have been discussing.
  2. I glimpse down the 5 Random Solos and read any I fancy
  3. If I haven't found anything interesting to read by now, I'll register and then click on Solos

The 25 Quickcuts never get a look in, neither do the 30 New Commentaries.

So my browsing habits appear in complete contradiction to the number of links available. New Commentaries and Quickcuts are most prolific but hardly get read. The items of which there are only eight and five respectively are my most often read.

I know from a thread a few months ago that lots of people click on Quickcuts and nothing else, but I wonder how many people share similar browsing habits to mine. If so, could we have more of the New Posts and Random Solos

New stories

New story posts are the reason the site exists, it wouldn't make sense to cut down on them. I've got as much room on the front page dedicated to Solos and New blogs and forums as there is available.

You can get more random solos by clicking on the link at the bottom of the five featured on the front page. Same for the blogs and forums.

Hugs,
Erin

My strategy...

Of course, there are probably almost as many different strategies as users (and some may not have a fixed strategy), but I think this is what I usually do:

1) Are there any updates to stories I've been following in Quickcuts? If so, read then return.
2) Are there any interesting-looking new stories / solos in Quickcuts? If so, read then return.
3) Are there any new blog posts? If so read, then return.
4) Any new comments on stories I've been reading? If so read, then return.

Once I've exhausted all those:

5) Open up any unread random solos in new tabs
6) Switch to the first one. If it isn't too long I'll read it there and then.
7) If it is quite long, I'll keep it open, saving it for later, and flick to the next one.
8) Once I've read one, I close the tab, return to the homepage tab, and refresh. Repeat all steps bar (5).

Mine?

I have two routines - one is for starting, the second for continuing,

1)Login. I need to see new comments.
2)Open last 100 comments. So I don't miss anything.
3)Go to university. I wake up at 7.30, and the first lecture is at 8.30. I don't have time for more.
4)Return, open a new tab with both home page and comments. Check for last comment on there, if read, close 1st 100 comments page.
5)Go to the bottom of the 2nd Home page and page up, opening any story that has been commented on, then open new stories.
6)Check 100 comments and open all other comments to stories not yet open. Close the tab.
7)Go through all opened tabs, saving new stories for last.
8)Refresh Home page.

9)Go through new comments on the sidebar, then new stories on quickcuts, if any. Refresh home page.
10)Wait an hour or four. Repeat 9.
