I started writing a new story, I posted the first chapter on this site and on Crystals. I am enjoying the idea and writing it. How ever I wonder if this is a good idea. I havent really recieved the feedback I had hoped for. I guess many readers dont like horror with a transgender twist in it.

On crystals, I got this review: For pity's sake, let us know it's a story about vampires so we don't waste our time. "Vampire venom?" Puhlease!

I felt like putting my own smart elek responce to that. I know not everyone likes Anne Rice type storys lol. But oh well i know some do. But those type if they are in the mood for Anne Rice they may not want to read about a boy in a dress along with it.

Well, Im not saying im going to stop writing this story and I will keep posting it here.

Comments

My advice to you is this:

My advice to you is this: Don't stop writing. I agree with one of the commenters on your story you posted recently. You are improving. One thing is, not everyone is going to like your story. But if they don't like the subject matter, then they don't have to read it. No one is going to force people to read stories.

So no worries. Keep working at it and your stories will continue to improve. But don't sweat people who don't offer a constructive opinion. 'A boy in a dress doesn't belong in this story'? (Okay I am changing some things) Um, what type of site are we on?

In the "real world," people pay thousands of dollars to attend "writing weekends" in which people who are already mad because they've spent an amortised three hundred dollars for a chicken salad sandwich with a bit of lettuce critique your story with incisive fury and the barely-repressed desire to kill you.

If they can manage to make you feel bad enough about your writing and yourself that you hang yourself in a closet, they'll have more "face time" with the master writers who host the workshop, so they're motivated to be especially cruel.

On Big Closet, you get much more personalised responses, few people are angry (mad perhaps, but we must remember the Hatter), since they're all kicked back at the terminal, or out on a beach with a wireless connection, feeling mellow and (mostly) filled with generous bonhomie and the spirit of loving kindness. The price is much more reasonable as well. What's not to like?

Vampire Stories

I guess the person who critiqued the story is not up with pop culture. One of the most successful book series and movie recently is "Twilight" a vampire romance story aimed at teenage girls. Any genre written well, is good reading. Just avoid the cliches and find unique plausible angles to make it interesting and those who like the genre will follow it. Experimenting with different genres or putting a twist on an old favorite is a good way to challenge your writing skills and improve. Keep writing.

As you may percieve, my writing tends to be informative and I not very good at telling stories. But I can be a captivating speaker, especially when the exits are locked.

Agree/Disagree

I"m not sure that current pop culture has any bearing on stories posted here or on StortSite. And I totally disagree with the idea that genre is irrelevant as long as the story is well-written.

That being said, I agree that the comment made on SS is not enough of a reason to stop writing your story. To be fair, I'm not sure if SS has any kind of 'roll your own' tags like here on BC, so it might help if some mention were made in the synopsis that it is a TG vampire horror story, so reader beware.

As far as I am concerned, the comment system on SS, FM, and the other sites compare poorly to the setup on BC, so you might want to weight the comments appropriately. The way things are on SS, people have to be strongly motivated to leave a comment. So you will get fewer comments but more strong reactions. And let's face it, negative reactions will generally be stronger than positive ones.

I went outside once. The graphics weren' that great.

Vampires...

One of the hottest shows on the HBO cable network is True Blood, a gritty series loosely based on the very popular Sookie Stackhouse "Southern Vampire" series of novels by Charlaine Harris. Another very popular series is the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series by Laurell K. Hamilton. Her series features lots of bisexuality and homoeroticism, a staple of the genre. Charlaine Harris' stories have less, and in fact are relatively prudish (by comparison), but they represent two not particularly extreme variations of a common theme. Vampire eroticism tends to be about blood, which is in itself not gendered, so "anything goes" is more or less the standard.

Hang in there. Write what

Hang in there. Write what you like. What you enjoy. It's a big world, and there are others who share your tastes.

Don't let the nasties discourage you. Keep in mind the least helpful comments will come from those with little talent, and even less manners. If you must respond, do so politely - it will confuse the hell out of them. :) Otherwise just let it flow over and past you, without touching.

Above all, keep writing! To give up means the nasties win.
