Looking for an old story. Young man is selected by a magician to be his apprentice. He is told to 'be prepared' for a quest. He ends up as a female and joins a circus to find a ring. I do not think it was ever completed.

looking for a story

The story you are looking for is "Lady of the Ring" (possible plural on last word, it's been a while since I have read this one).

It's Been Done...

The inquiry, I mean, not the story, by Brandy DeWinter and Ellen Hayes, which wasn't completed.

Here's the blog entry, from 2013. The geocities link still leads to the front page of the story and Brandy's explanation. I didn't check to see whether the chapter links are still intact.

Actually, I see that you were one of the people who answered the question that time. (I did a search for "Lady of the Rings" here and found it. Searches on DuckDuckGo and Bing were unsuccessful.)

Super Egos and Strong Emotions

Some writers aren't able to separate their life from their stories. Not necessarily a bad thing nor a good thing. But it does make them potentially very volatile as the connection between their emotions, mind, and story has no disconnect. A word said by another is misinterpreted and bad blood immediately rises from one who took the wrong meaning.
So it seems great stories written and inspired by a commingling of two minds suddenly becomes a poison well to one who blames the other for a multitude of reasons real or not.

The Lady of The Rings became an incomplete story over such feelings.

"Lady of The Rings" is a

"Lady of The Rings" is a story by Brandy Dewinter and Ellen Hayes. Although both authors have an entry in BigCloset, you will not find this story here.
Sadly, this story is only half finished due to a dispute between the two authors.
As Brandy Dewinter mentions:

No one is more sad than I am at what has happened on this story - and MUCH more importantly to the friendship I once shared with Ellen. In addition, as an author I feel a strong sense of responsibility to finish a story once I have drawn in the interest of readers. I seriously considered taking the story down from my site (as Ellen has taken it down from hers) so that no future readers would mistakenly make the very-reasonable assumption that this story would someday be finished. Instead, I have decided to offer this warning. Some readers have indicated that - even incomplete - this story is worth reading. I know that it is better than anything else I have ever been a part of as a writer (aside from being incomplete which is a very serious flaw, of course). So, I'll let the readers decide whether to invest a portion of their imagination in this portion of a story.
