I've just wiped out 2400 words of chapter 64 by the simple mistake of touching 'control c c 'through shaky finger (old age) So no Feminist Queendom tonight.

A lot of programs have 'undo' ...

It's very often the CTRL-Z combo (hold CTRL, press 'z').

:( Losing stuff does byte-er-bite. :(

Ctrl-Z fixes my mistakes, oh, several times per day.
Ctrl-S to save.
Ctrl-A - select All.
Ctrl-C - copy what is selected .
Ctrl-V - paste what was copied to where the cursor is. (The 'V' part is from the proofreaders' "arrow" for 'insert here'.) This is nice for moving things, like a whole paragraph.
Ctrl-Y - un-un-do, that is, re-do what I just un-did

(We don't need to press shift, I'm used capitals for clarity.) Some programs have various CTRL-SHIFT-x for various other functions. Example: in Chrome browser, CTRL-SHIFT-T restores (one by one) recently closed tabs.

I won't guarantee that all programs have these controls, but they are worth experimenting with on a 'throw-away' document.

If you are using an Apple Mac

then 'Ctrl' anything won't work unless you are in a terminal window.
Replace 'Ctrl' with 'Command' and you will be fine.

There is nothing like regular use of the 'save' option to stop losing all your lovely work.
taking proper backups are essential. By proper, I mean ones where you know that you can retrieve just a single file from 6 months ago. how many people here have a backup app in place but have no idea about how to recover one file?
Learning how to do this when the chips are down is not a good idea.

Just a thought...

Indeed

That's why I said that for a Mac, Ctrl-* commands work in a Terminal window that uses 'zsh' as its shell. MacOS has many 'unix' like underpinnings.
I first came upon the 'Ctrl-*' commands circa 1974 when I started using a DEC PDP-11/40 while I was at Polytechnic. Shudder... 47 years ago. Makes me feel old.
