It's probably old news over there across the pond, but those who haven't been aware, ABC will feature an openly trans child in one of their series.

The Riches

If you don't count the cable channel FX series The Riches. It ran for two seasons in 07 and 08. The youngest boy was definitely a transvestite, and by some sources transexual.

There is a huge difference

There is a huge difference there: the actor who played the youngest child wasn't himself actually transgender. The actor on Modern Family really is transgender, not a boy playing the role of a transgender child..

Don't worry about that,

Don't worry about that, according to sources his role was specifically written to show non-binary gender children so it was in and of itself groundbreaking.

The scheduling is suspect,

The scheduling is suspect, the network is trying to minimize the coverage in case of fallout from the nut jobs and political hacks but frankly by the preview for the show his storyline isn't even the primary or secondary plot for the episode. It comes off a little as a ratings stunt but the show has already pushed boundaries so it's nothing new from them.

The show is going as I

The show is going as I expected, his storyline is lesser of the three storylines for the episode.

The heart of their storyline is the bad reaction that the daughter of the show's openly gay couple has to her playmate being female to male transgender. They try to find blame for her reaction instead of sitting her down and talking with her. The boy has little actual interaction, he was simply acting as himself in the few scenes he does have with the cast. The publicity was more important than his actually being on the show, you could easily miss him and never notice he appeared on the show.

Maybe not the first ...

Not to take anything away from this child, but last week's (9/23) episode of Transparent, "If I Were a Bell": was the particularly poignant backstory of Maura (the Jeffrey Tambor character) at age 12, and played by Sophia Grace Gianni, about whom nothing is known other than one of the show's producers telling The Hollywood Reporter magazine that Sophia is transgender, and implying that she is approximately that age. Regardless of who is "first", this episode should be seen for the reality of being a transgender Jewish boy in 1958 ... (you need know next to nothing about the characters in the show itself; it's all flashbacks)

It would be accurate to say that Jackson Millarker, who plays the transgender child in Modern Family, is "the first female-to-male child actor in a major network program"... but that's a lot of syllables. The main point is that ABC is going heavy on the publicity for this, and that America may see -- for the first time for many -- a trans boy. Yes, they do exist, America!.
