Part 11 of 23
by Tiffany Shar

Intro by Carla Ann

’Well that was a disaster,’ Tiffany’s grandmother thought. ‘I can’t believe Allen would do that to his brother and his niece!’ She thought for another second though and added, ‘Well maybe I can…’

As a wife of a former alcoholic, she recognized all of the signs and worried for her daughter-in-law and her grandchildren. Her son was getting harder and harder to recognize every time she saw him. ‘I don’t think talking to him will do any good either…’ she sighed to herself.

She took a minute to look at her granddaughter who had been the catalyst to her son’s outburst. ‘Tiffany is so pretty, you really can’t even begin to remember her as a boy… It was definitely the right thing to let her be herself… if only others can realize that.’

by Tiffany Shar

Intro by Carla Ann

Caleb went upstairs to his bedroom more convinced than ever that his dad was out of control. ‘What’s the big deal about Tiffany anyway?’ he asked himself. Yes it was a bit weird to see his twelve year old cousin dressed as a girl… but at the same time she was cute. ‘Not in that way,’ he told himself. Times really were different now. He had several girls that he’d grown up with that had recently decided they liked girls instead of boys. ‘It’s weird… but it’s not that big of a deal!’

’I just hope Dad doesn’t do anything really stupid tomorrow… Maybe I can find a way to keep him from the whiskey bottle.’ He shook his head, ‘No. He’s gotten bad… I’m sure he really is an alcoholic.’

For all of his athletic prowess, and lots of friends on the football team that drank frequently, Caleb stayed away from it. Watching his dad being hooked on it was enough reason to stay away from it. He looked at himself in the mirror and splashed some water on his face, ‘I hope tomorrow goes better…’

Intro by Carla Ann

Joe turned over in bed for what must have been the hundredth time in the last hour. He just couldn’t sleep tonight. ‘Is this really a good idea…?’ he asked himself in regards to their upcoming trip to see his family in Denver for Thanksgiving.

’The last time I talked to Allen he seemed to be okay enough for us to go up there, but he was pretty cruel this summer about Tiffany.’ He thought back to some of the words they had spoken over the phone when his brother had found out he was letting his nephew become his niece. Joe would have beaten his brother into a pulp if he had said that kind of stuff in front of him. ‘If Mom hadn’t gotten involved I’m sure we wouldn’t have received an invitation to go up there… I almost wish we hadn’t.’ He didn’t know what he was going to do if things went poorly.

Joe tossed and turned for several more hours before he finally managed to sleep.

Kim Cho was one of the best agents available. He was also one of the youngest. This was both good and bad for him, especially when he was assigned to work as a bodyguard at St. Genevieve's Preparatory School for Gifted Young Women.

by Tiffany Shar

Intro by Carla Ann

’How in the world does she deal with both of our girls together all of the time?’ Tiffany’s mom asked herself, not for the first time. She had always liked Amy, and even now thought of her as a second daughter, but when you put her and Tiffany together it was like an explosion of energy! Last night she’d come in finally and told them again to get to sleep. ‘And I have no doubt Tiffany’ll be cranky all day now…’

’Oh well, if they’re going to stay up all night, they’re just going to have to learn to deal with the consequence of being tired. Maybe it helps Melanie that Tiffany has her own room over there…’

She sighed, ‘better get this fun over with,’ and began the process of getting two very sleepy girls out of bed.

Intro by Carla Ann

Amy waited in the car for Tiffany to come out of her house. Friday had been a disaster for her best friend, and she worried about what might happen as the year continued. 'You would think they would accept her eventually...' The problem as she saw it though was that her best friend was too pretty, smart, and talented for her own good.

Tiffany came out the door and locked up. She wore a worried expression on her face that Amy shared. 'I hope today is better...'

This felt like déjá  vu… should she wake her daughter up…? ‘I guess we don’t really have a choice about going shopping today. She needs a new backpack after yesterday. I still can’t believe those kids…’ When Tiffany had called she had felt her heart sink. Anytime she got a phone call she knew it couldn’t be good, but she’d been right that it had been worse than most. ‘I’m getting worried, I really hope this all settles down soon…’

She sighed and opened the door to wake her daughter up. Hopefully today would be good for both of them.

…Oh, do you mean my being a lesbian," said Amarjit, smiling as she finally understood what her Mother had been trying to say. She winked at me before replying, "don't worry, Celyn likes boys."

"Not all the time, as you know." I whispered in Amarjit's ear as we made our way up the stairs…

by Tiffany Shar

Intro by Carla Ann

Joe hated his job sometimes. Today for instance… it was possibly a pivotal event in his young daughter's life, and he had to leave right in the middle of it. He knew his employers were bending over backward to help his family, but he was also their most senior and experienced manager and technician, and the business depended on him keeping the project on time. 'I just hope she knows how much I love her. She has such worry in her eyes sometimes when she looks at me, like she's not sure...'

He snapped the connector onto the servo board and hollered to Dave, "Try it now. You should get eight point five volts or so at uh… .twenty milliamps -- no wait. Twenty two milliamps." 'Those new doctors sure were efficient. They know so much about Tiffany, and us after just this morning it seems they've been treating her for years. One thing bothers me though. Dr. Reynolds told us how much Tiffany fears that I love her less than Brandon, and that I'm somehow in mourning over the 'loss' of my son… but it never really sank in until today. I guess it took hearing it from male doctors for me to really understand.'

"Okay? Good! Okay, next diagnostic. Get a mark on it, then get your hand out of the way. It should rotate twelve degrees exactly. Ready?" 'I'm so happy we finally know why she was struggling so, she's such a natural girl I don't know why we didn't see it before. I just wish I didn't feel so helpless when those kids mistreat her. Well, hopefully if things go well this afternoon, she'll soon begin to develop like her friends. That should help...' "Hang on a sec Dave. The probe slipped. Drat, what step are we on again?"

"Joe, you sure you're okay? You're acting like you're here but your brain's in space. Really, the boys and I can cover this. You go take care of your family."

"No that's okay. We'll never finish in time if I do. Mandy will call if she needs me. And I'll find out what happened tonight..."

Standing Up to Life: Book 3

Part 4 of 23
by Tiffany Shar

Intro by Carla Ann

Tiffany’s mom stood outside the door to her daughter’s room. ‘should I wake her or not…?’ Tiffany had pushed herself too hard the past few weeks with all of her many commitments to the dance squad, band, and numerous other activities. Just last night she worried that she was going to have to open up the bathroom door to check on her. ‘She was in that shower an awfully long time… I was getting worried.’

It would be important for Tiffany to get some rest this weekend, especially if her appointment this week didn’t pan out the way she and her daughter hoped. She couldn't take that much disappointment in her current condition. True, right now no one could tell that her daughter hadn’t been born as her daughter… but that could become a problem at any time if her body started to continue down the road of her natural puberty. She was on hormone blockers for now, but she worried it might not be enough…

‘One thing for sure, we both need a break from all this worry. Shopping will help us both!’

She made her decision and began to knock on her daughter’s door to wake her up.

Intro by Carla Ann

“Oww!!” I said as I felt the rocks of the track dig into my legs.

Courtney, who had dropped me had also fallen over, but she got up quickly and came over, “Are you okay Tiffany?”

As I looked into her eyes I wasn’t actually sure if she really was concerned or not. She was one of the girls that hadn’t made the dance squad. I forced myself to take the hand that she offered and said, “I think so… ouch though. Can we avoid doing that?” I asked her as nicely as I could. Honestly I was pretty mad, there was no good reason for her to be dropping me at this point in the season.

“I’m really sorry, I don’t know why my hands slipped.” She said. This time I could see a little quiver to her lips and realized it had really been an accident.

I got dropped in practice frequently… ‘Why was I getting so mad about this one?’ I asked myself as I gave her a hug and said, “It’s okay… sorry I snapped at you about it. It could happen to anyone.”

I gave her as real of a smile as I was capable of at that moment before Amy came over and said, “Tiffany you probably should put some band-aides on those,” as she pointed to my legs.

“I’m bleeding?” I said all of the sudden surprised. I had quite a few scratches on my legs where the stupid rocks had cut into me.

Standing Up to Life: Book 3

Part 2 of 23
by Tiffany Shar

Intro by Carla Ann

“Tiffany, I’ve asked you how everything is going with people and the activities you’re involved in, but you haven’t mentioned how you are coping with everything.” She emphasized the ‘you,’ when she asked that.

“Well, better than I was last year,” I started. “Way better than last year… I have a lot of friends now, and I’m not getting picked on every day.” I saw her eyes boring into me looking for something else. “Alright, I don’t know how I’m doing right now.” I told her honestly.

“What do you mean?” She asked.

“Well for one I’m really tired of everyone guessing I’m five if I wear the wrong clothes.” I told her hesitantly. I was sure my parents had filled her in with everything anyway, “Tuesday was pajama day. Mom and I had found some cute pajamas with feet on them that would fit Amy and me, so we wore them for pajama day. We really did look cute dressed like that, and I was having a lot of fun with it. That was until the sub in English class thought that I was someone’s little sister that had come them to school that day.”

I was really surprised Dr. Reynolds didn’t laugh about it, but I continued, “Then the next day the whole squad was wearing shortalls and our hair done in pigtails and I looked to be about five again. One of my best friends even brought a doll to school to play a joke on the sub that we’d had. I don’t think she knew that it really upset me though. I’m not five, I’m twelve! Amy has grown about five inches here in the last couple months, but I’m still the same height I was last year. It’s good for cheerleading stuff because people can toss me so easily… but…” I was doing my best to not go into tears over all of this. “as long as we’ve got my puberty stopped then I won’t be doing much growing. That’s all on top of the fact that I’m never going to be able to have periods like my friends… and I’m stuck with this stupid thing between my legs,” I told her with a great deal of exasperation. “I’m so tired of having to look at it, or hide it, every time I turn around. I know you can’t do anything about it till I’m eighteen – but I wish it could be gone now!” I had gone to tears now.

Skipper! Chapter 25

Skipper! by Beverly Taff

This chapter follows events after the and the court case that ensues concerning the 'Honour Killings' There is litle or no transgendered material in this 'interim connection' chapter but there is some philosphical exploration of the relationships between faiths and transgenderism. (Have I got an agenda here?) I ask myself. Possibly, even probably, yes.

I Woke, Part 10

I Woke, Part 10

I panicked. My day started by going to the courthouse for the opening of the trial of the attacker of Allison Allen. I had been stuck in her body for months, and I felt my chance to get some justice for her was failing.

I had gotten a sneak peak at the Crown’s case against this young man, and without some miracle, I felt it was at best a 50-50 chance to get a conviction. Sitting in the courtroom while we waited for our case to be heard, I got a crash course in how our law works. It was very different from what the American TV shows portrayed.

Dreaming of Cheers
Standing Up to Life: Book 3

Part 1 of 23
by Tiffany Shar

Foreword by Carla Ann

The door opened slowly. Inside, the elite Holden Coyotes Dance Squad is busy learning a routine. The girls are smiling despite the sweat and exertion. Two captains in front of the squad appear even more intense. Moving as sisters and leading by example they prod their team, their aim set on State or even National titles, lofty goals for their first year team. Tiny Co-Captain Tiffany Jacobson is entirely in her element and it shows. No one could watch and disagree.

Principal Henry watched, unobserved, as her friend Mandy Holt worked the girls. ‘She’s right, they have the makings of a championship squad.’ She smiled at the irony. ‘It almost didn’t happen.’ Weeks ago factions had allied to prevent Tiffany from trying out. The girl’s family and friends had to take their fight before the school board. Tiffany herself had finally laid matters to rest, courageously facing down her accusers at the meeting. She had merely asked for the same chance as any other girl. Luckily, the Board agreed. ‘Thank God for that. I’d still be trying to fill vacant jobs — certainly Mandy’s.’

She’d never seen a child blossom like Tiffany had this year. From bright, confused, and scared little boy in a world of bullies to this self-aware girl with so much talent; her transformation from pariah to pretty insider was amazing. Her authenticity made her a virtual friend magnet. ‘It’s worth the trouble she’s caused me. She has such great friends… If only her enemies will let her be’. She wondered what struggles and triumphs her small charge would see this school year. A lucky educator is blessed to mentor at least one student in their career whose intelligence, talent, and drive spurs them to great things in adulthood. ‘I wonder if she’ll be one?’

I cried. I was in the ICU, waiting for my old body to die. I tried to calm myself down by organizing my thoughts since the accident that left me trapped in the body of Allison Allen. It was the end of Spring Break, and the next day I was due back in class for the first time as Allison.

"So JR after that little chat you still want to go ahead with this?"

"Yes Sis it needs to be done too many have been hurt for too long, whoever is doing this needs to be stopped and at least jailed or given therapy" JR stated firmly "Well it looks like we start going shopping for my new young sister. I do hope you don’t end up needing diaper's though"

"Very funny Sis” but the thought did worry JR.

I shouted. My shout woke me up, and I remembered where I was. I was in the body of a girl named Allison Allen, and I had no idea how to get back to my own life. Worse, I seemed to be remembering more and more of Allison’s life every day.

I rode. I was in my “mother’s” car, going to the home of Allison Allen. Only problem with that was I had woken up as Allison two days ago, and before that I was a 40 year old man named Mark Collins. I had stopped to help a girl, who turned out to be Allison, when I had been hit by a truck, which I had learned was being driven by Allison’s attacker.

I slept. While I slept I dreamed. I saw images, snapshots. An accident. Being taken to the hospital, feeling my spirit leave my body. Going into the next room where more doctors and nurses were working.
