Standing Up to Life: Book 3

Part 23 of 23
by Tiffany Shar

Intro by Carla Ann

'What the hell just happened?' Juan asked himself. He was off duty and supposed to be having a quiet dinner with his wife, his partner and his wife, and a couple other friends, when this lady went psycho. 'Can't get a moment of peace, can I?'

Of course as far as he could tell now that he'd sorted things out, the poor little girl the woman attempted to assault couldn't either... 'If half of what they told me has happened to this girl is true...' He shook his head. 'If she did take out that kids’ eye, good for her! Idiot! Thinking he could assault a police officer...' He was still a bit unnerved as he thought about how the little girl had looked after all of this. ‘That poor kid…’

He had talked to his sergeant on the radio from his car after the suspects had been cuffed, and had been asked to bring them into the station himself.

He swore once again as he looked back in the rearview mirror, 'I sure hope these two get locked up as long as they can... ruining my one quiet dinner in a week!' His partner looked just as miffed as he was over their lost meal. He was sure his wife would box up his chicken alfredo... but it wouldn't be the same.

Part 22 of 23
by Tiffany Shar

Intro by Carla Ann

Mr. Randolph had been teaching for many years, and had the privilege of working with some really great students during that time. The students that sat before him though were above most of them in his mind. Amy was absolutely going to be a stunning beauty as she grew up into high school… he was glad he wasn’t the girl’s father. Amazingly she had brains to go with that, something that was uncommonly rare in his experience. Nikki, though extremely short for her age, was going to be much the same. He was sure the boys were going to be going to great places too.

The most amazing thing to him, though, was that the other girl was the reason this group held together. Oh they would have been friends… but Tiffany seemed to be like a magnet these days that attracted some really great friends. ‘She attracted enemies too…’ he thought sadly to himself. The attack on her had been like a stab in the heart to most of her teachers; himself included.

’No, the most amazing thing isn’t that this girl didn’t grow up as one… it’s that she’s kept going through it all. No one has been able to stop her…’ He looked up at them as the group talked about their project. If anyone else came to him with the idea these kids had he would have told them it would be impossible… Tiffany seemed to break many of those odds though, and with her friends he was certain they would astound him again.

Intro by Carla Ann

’She’s looking better and better every day,’ Melanie thought to herself as she watched her husband help get Tiffany’s bag into the back of their vehicle. ‘If only her psychological wounds will heal that quick…’ She added with a sigh.

She had long specialized in the anatomical side of medicine… never really interested in psychiatry. She had friends who did though, including Tiffany’s doctor, and knew from even her limited knowledge this was going to be a long process for her. ‘Maybe this week will help?’ She asked hopefully.

”Everyone set?” Her husband asked, and they set off for their retreat in the mountains.

Part 20 of 23
by Tiffany Shar

Intro by Carla Ann

Joe decided to quickly look in on his sleeping little girl as he headed down the hallway to go to bed. The last year was just unreal in his mind… things had changed so fast. ‘And we almost lost her…’ He couldn’t get it out of his mind any more than his wife could. They’d let Tiffany go stay occasionally at the Hancock’s house this week only because they knew they loved her almost as much as her parents did. It had not been easy for them to let her out of their sight after everything.

‘Thank God Mandy’s family is more sane than mine!’ He thought to himself as he closed the door silently. He had worried endlessly before letting her near his family, and it had been justified really. Joe didn’t trust Allen any farther than he could throw him.

As he lay down that night next to his wife he did his best to not think about what had happened in the past few months. Instead he tried to picture his little girl and how cute she would be on Christmas morning, excited about her presents. ‘She should be happy about them,’ he thought to himself, smiling. With that he was finally able to clear his mind for a while and sleep.

Part 19 of 23
by Tiffany Shar

Intro by Carla Ann

Tiffany’s mom sat on the edge of their bed with her husband’s arms wrapped securely around her. She just couldn’t stop crying… ‘How did we let this happen to her!?!’ she asked herself for the millionth time. ‘We should have insisted that she always be walked by a teacher between rooms… we should have made them do something to those… those… monsters sooner… we should have pulled her from the school,’ a new sob came from her.

She knew in her heart that they had done about everything they could to protect her… the problem was that there was nothing she could have done. And it scared her.

‘Thank God she’s alive,’ she thought for the thousandth time that night. ‘If that boy Kyle hadn’t found her…’ She continued to sob quietly for a long time while her husband held her and contributed his own tears. They’d almost lost her…

Intro by Carla Ann

The paramedic looked at the young girl in front of him as he strapped her onto the gurney. She was just barely conscious and obviously had trauma to her head. Blood was coming out from numerous lacerations… but those ultimately didn’t worry him as much. Moments later as the ambulance sped down the street he tuned out the girl’s mother who was sobbing hysterically. She was just holding the girls other hand and staying out of his way… that’s all he could really hope for.

”Pete!” He called up to the driver in front.

”What do you need Andy?”

”Make sure the hospital is prepped for possible head trauma.”

”I’ll call it in right now…”

Amy looked over at her friend sitting at her makeup table. She had trouble remembering Tiffany before now… She was Tiffany. She sighed and thought about the day. Poor Tiffany… Everything kept going so bad at school recently.

’At least she’s got some good things going too,’ Amy thought to herself. ‘I would have liked that choir solo myself… but Tiffany’s such a good singer — she deserved it.’ With the concert this week she was sure that both of them were going to be busy with choir stuff at least.

A moment later she traded places with Tiffany so she could work on getting ready herself.

Standing Up to Life: Book 3

Part 16 of 23
by Tiffany Shar

Intro by Carla Ann

Tiffany’s mom drove down the road to her first stop of the morning, thinking about her daughter who was probably just waking up. The bus route she drove was a longer one that ran out to some rural areas of the district, and that meant she forever was leaving before her daughter even woke up to make her run. As she opened up the door to let her first three kids on she sighed, ‘I don’t know what more we can do right now.’

Several of her friends had suggested pulling Tiffany from Holden and putting her in the other junior high, but she doubted that would help. No, the only sure fire way to get her free of her tormentors would be to home school her... which she was afraid would break her daughter. She loved playing in band, being on the dance squad, and hanging out with her friends there. She could see her eyes light up anytime she talked about the dance squad or about band…well sometimes — even that light didn’t shine often anymore.

’I don’t know how to protect my baby,’ she said to herself and tried to refocus her mind to the road so she didn’t break out in tears over it all right then.

Intro by Carla Ann

’What a week so far!’ Joe thought to himself. Of course last week had been a near disaster, but did that mean this week had to be too…? Between work and everything going on with his daughter he was having a hard time sleeping or focusing. ‘As soon as Tiffany is up and going I need to get out of here today… Brian said that part came in after I left yesterday, we need to get that contract finished up…’

Joe almost missed the snow outside his bathroom window as he got ready, so consumed he was of everything going on. ‘Well maybe that’ll make Tiffany’s day a bit better.’

‘…I’ll just settle for her making it safely through the week.’

Intro by Carla Ann

Melanie worked on getting some breakfast ready for ‘her’ two girls that were upstairs getting ready for school. Amy was her daughter, but Tiffany really was like an adopted daughter. She loved them both a lot, but feared for Tiffany. ‘Poor girl… I can’t believe what Mandy said her brother-in-law did last week…’

She sighed and filled two glasses with orange juice that she sat on the table. ‘I hope we can get her through this week. At least this weekend she’ll get to go with us up to the condo and get away…’

Part 12 of 23
by Tiffany Shar

Intro by Carla Ann

’We survived…’ that was all Tiffany’s dad could say about the last few days. He wished that they had just stayed home for Thanksgiving or had gone to Mandy’s parents. His brother had been completely out of control. He looked down into the sink and rinsed his razor one more time before opening the door up.

”I’m done honey,” he told his wife.

She turned around and the two shared an embrace that made him feel better. ‘Through all of this at least I have a wife and daughter that love me dearly…’ he thought. “Joe, will you wake up Tiffany please?”

”Sure,” he responded. This wasn’t the easiest thing to do in the morning, but it was always fun to watch his daughter wake up. She was always so cute with her hair all over the place and the grumpy expression that was inevitable… He smiled as he moved to the other side of the room where she lay sleeping.

Intro by Carla Ann

’Well that was a disaster,’ Tiffany’s grandmother thought. ‘I can’t believe Allen would do that to his brother and his niece!’ She thought for another second though and added, ‘Well maybe I can…’

As a wife of a former alcoholic, she recognized all of the signs and worried for her daughter-in-law and her grandchildren. Her son was getting harder and harder to recognize every time she saw him. ‘I don’t think talking to him will do any good either…’ she sighed to herself.

She took a minute to look at her granddaughter who had been the catalyst to her son’s outburst. ‘Tiffany is so pretty, you really can’t even begin to remember her as a boy… It was definitely the right thing to let her be herself… if only others can realize that.’

Part 10 of 23
by Tiffany Shar

Intro by Carla Ann

Caleb went upstairs to his bedroom more convinced than ever that his dad was out of control. ‘What’s the big deal about Tiffany anyway?’ he asked himself. Yes it was a bit weird to see his twelve year old cousin dressed as a girl… but at the same time she was cute. ‘Not in that way,’ he told himself. Times really were different now. He had several girls that he’d grown up with that had recently decided they liked girls instead of boys. ‘It’s weird… but it’s not that big of a deal!’

’I just hope Dad doesn’t do anything really stupid tomorrow… Maybe I can find a way to keep him from the whiskey bottle.’ He shook his head, ‘No. He’s gotten bad… I’m sure he really is an alcoholic.’

For all of his athletic prowess, and lots of friends on the football team that drank frequently, Caleb stayed away from it. Watching his dad being hooked on it was enough reason to stay away from it. He looked at himself in the mirror and splashed some water on his face, ‘I hope tomorrow goes better…’

Intro by Carla Ann

Joe turned over in bed for what must have been the hundredth time in the last hour. He just couldn’t sleep tonight. ‘Is this really a good idea…?’ he asked himself in regards to their upcoming trip to see his family in Denver for Thanksgiving.

’The last time I talked to Allen he seemed to be okay enough for us to go up there, but he was pretty cruel this summer about Tiffany.’ He thought back to some of the words they had spoken over the phone when his brother had found out he was letting his nephew become his niece. Joe would have beaten his brother into a pulp if he had said that kind of stuff in front of him. ‘If Mom hadn’t gotten involved I’m sure we wouldn’t have received an invitation to go up there… I almost wish we hadn’t.’ He didn’t know what he was going to do if things went poorly.

Joe tossed and turned for several more hours before he finally managed to sleep.

Intro by Carla Ann

’How in the world does she deal with both of our girls together all of the time?’ Tiffany’s mom asked herself, not for the first time. She had always liked Amy, and even now thought of her as a second daughter, but when you put her and Tiffany together it was like an explosion of energy! Last night she’d come in finally and told them again to get to sleep. ‘And I have no doubt Tiffany’ll be cranky all day now…’

’Oh well, if they’re going to stay up all night, they’re just going to have to learn to deal with the consequence of being tired. Maybe it helps Melanie that Tiffany has her own room over there…’

She sighed, ‘better get this fun over with,’ and began the process of getting two very sleepy girls out of bed.

Intro by Carla Ann

Amy waited in the car for Tiffany to come out of her house. Friday had been a disaster for her best friend, and she worried about what might happen as the year continued. 'You would think they would accept her eventually...' The problem as she saw it though was that her best friend was too pretty, smart, and talented for her own good.

Tiffany came out the door and locked up. She wore a worried expression on her face that Amy shared. 'I hope today is better...'

Intro by Carla Ann

This felt like déjá  vu… should she wake her daughter up…? ‘I guess we don’t really have a choice about going shopping today. She needs a new backpack after yesterday. I still can’t believe those kids…’ When Tiffany had called she had felt her heart sink. Anytime she got a phone call she knew it couldn’t be good, but she’d been right that it had been worse than most. ‘I’m getting worried, I really hope this all settles down soon…’

She sighed and opened the door to wake her daughter up. Hopefully today would be good for both of them.

Part 5 of 23
by Tiffany Shar

Intro by Carla Ann

Joe hated his job sometimes. Today for instance… it was possibly a pivotal event in his young daughter's life, and he had to leave right in the middle of it. He knew his employers were bending over backward to help his family, but he was also their most senior and experienced manager and technician, and the business depended on him keeping the project on time. 'I just hope she knows how much I love her. She has such worry in her eyes sometimes when she looks at me, like she's not sure...'

He snapped the connector onto the servo board and hollered to Dave, "Try it now. You should get eight point five volts or so at uh… .twenty milliamps -- no wait. Twenty two milliamps." 'Those new doctors sure were efficient. They know so much about Tiffany, and us after just this morning it seems they've been treating her for years. One thing bothers me though. Dr. Reynolds told us how much Tiffany fears that I love her less than Brandon, and that I'm somehow in mourning over the 'loss' of my son… but it never really sank in until today. I guess it took hearing it from male doctors for me to really understand.'

"Okay? Good! Okay, next diagnostic. Get a mark on it, then get your hand out of the way. It should rotate twelve degrees exactly. Ready?" 'I'm so happy we finally know why she was struggling so, she's such a natural girl I don't know why we didn't see it before. I just wish I didn't feel so helpless when those kids mistreat her. Well, hopefully if things go well this afternoon, she'll soon begin to develop like her friends. That should help...' "Hang on a sec Dave. The probe slipped. Drat, what step are we on again?"

"Joe, you sure you're okay? You're acting like you're here but your brain's in space. Really, the boys and I can cover this. You go take care of your family."

"No that's okay. We'll never finish in time if I do. Mandy will call if she needs me. And I'll find out what happened tonight..."

Part 4 of 23
by Tiffany Shar

Intro by Carla Ann

Tiffany’s mom stood outside the door to her daughter’s room. ‘should I wake her or not…?’ Tiffany had pushed herself too hard the past few weeks with all of her many commitments to the dance squad, band, and numerous other activities. Just last night she worried that she was going to have to open up the bathroom door to check on her. ‘She was in that shower an awfully long time… I was getting worried.’

It would be important for Tiffany to get some rest this weekend, especially if her appointment this week didn’t pan out the way she and her daughter hoped. She couldn't take that much disappointment in her current condition. True, right now no one could tell that her daughter hadn’t been born as her daughter… but that could become a problem at any time if her body started to continue down the road of her natural puberty. She was on hormone blockers for now, but she worried it might not be enough…

‘One thing for sure, we both need a break from all this worry. Shopping will help us both!’

She made her decision and began to knock on her daughter’s door to wake her up.

Intro by Carla Ann

“Oww!!” I said as I felt the rocks of the track dig into my legs.

Courtney, who had dropped me had also fallen over, but she got up quickly and came over, “Are you okay Tiffany?”

As I looked into her eyes I wasn’t actually sure if she really was concerned or not. She was one of the girls that hadn’t made the dance squad. I forced myself to take the hand that she offered and said, “I think so… ouch though. Can we avoid doing that?” I asked her as nicely as I could. Honestly I was pretty mad, there was no good reason for her to be dropping me at this point in the season.

“I’m really sorry, I don’t know why my hands slipped.” She said. This time I could see a little quiver to her lips and realized it had really been an accident.

I got dropped in practice frequently… ‘Why was I getting so mad about this one?’ I asked myself as I gave her a hug and said, “It’s okay… sorry I snapped at you about it. It could happen to anyone.”

I gave her as real of a smile as I was capable of at that moment before Amy came over and said, “Tiffany you probably should put some band-aides on those,” as she pointed to my legs.

“I’m bleeding?” I said all of the sudden surprised. I had quite a few scratches on my legs where the stupid rocks had cut into me.

by Tiffany Shar

Intro by Carla Ann

“Tiffany, I’ve asked you how everything is going with people and the activities you’re involved in, but you haven’t mentioned how you are coping with everything.” She emphasized the ‘you,’ when she asked that.

“Well, better than I was last year,” I started. “Way better than last year… I have a lot of friends now, and I’m not getting picked on every day.” I saw her eyes boring into me looking for something else. “Alright, I don’t know how I’m doing right now.” I told her honestly.

“What do you mean?” She asked.

“Well for one I’m really tired of everyone guessing I’m five if I wear the wrong clothes.” I told her hesitantly. I was sure my parents had filled her in with everything anyway, “Tuesday was pajama day. Mom and I had found some cute pajamas with feet on them that would fit Amy and me, so we wore them for pajama day. We really did look cute dressed like that, and I was having a lot of fun with it. That was until the sub in English class thought that I was someone’s little sister that had come them to school that day.”

I was really surprised Dr. Reynolds didn’t laugh about it, but I continued, “Then the next day the whole squad was wearing shortalls and our hair done in pigtails and I looked to be about five again. One of my best friends even brought a doll to school to play a joke on the sub that we’d had. I don’t think she knew that it really upset me though. I’m not five, I’m twelve! Amy has grown about five inches here in the last couple months, but I’m still the same height I was last year. It’s good for cheerleading stuff because people can toss me so easily… but…” I was doing my best to not go into tears over all of this. “as long as we’ve got my puberty stopped then I won’t be doing much growing. That’s all on top of the fact that I’m never going to be able to have periods like my friends… and I’m stuck with this stupid thing between my legs,” I told her with a great deal of exasperation. “I’m so tired of having to look at it, or hide it, every time I turn around. I know you can’t do anything about it till I’m eighteen – but I wish it could be gone now!” I had gone to tears now.

Dreaming of Cheers
Standing Up to Life: Book 3

Part 1 of 23
by Tiffany Shar

Foreword by Carla Ann

The door opened slowly. Inside, the elite Holden Coyotes Dance Squad is busy learning a routine. The girls are smiling despite the sweat and exertion. Two captains in front of the squad appear even more intense. Moving as sisters and leading by example they prod their team, their aim set on State or even National titles, lofty goals for their first year team. Tiny Co-Captain Tiffany Jacobson is entirely in her element and it shows. No one could watch and disagree.

Principal Henry watched, unobserved, as her friend Mandy Holt worked the girls. ‘She’s right, they have the makings of a championship squad.’ She smiled at the irony. ‘It almost didn’t happen.’ Weeks ago factions had allied to prevent Tiffany from trying out. The girl’s family and friends had to take their fight before the school board. Tiffany herself had finally laid matters to rest, courageously facing down her accusers at the meeting. She had merely asked for the same chance as any other girl. Luckily, the Board agreed. ‘Thank God for that. I’d still be trying to fill vacant jobs — certainly Mandy’s.’

She’d never seen a child blossom like Tiffany had this year. From bright, confused, and scared little boy in a world of bullies to this self-aware girl with so much talent; her transformation from pariah to pretty insider was amazing. Her authenticity made her a virtual friend magnet. ‘It’s worth the trouble she’s caused me. She has such great friends… If only her enemies will let her be’. She wondered what struggles and triumphs her small charge would see this school year. A lucky educator is blessed to mentor at least one student in their career whose intelligence, talent, and drive spurs them to great things in adulthood. ‘I wonder if she’ll be one?’
