Chapter 80
We say so long and then we say hello.

It was early on Thursday, June 22, and today is the day Amy, and I head to New Mexico. We had just finished a great breakfast, with my parents, Amy’s parents, and Bill. Amy and I were about to excuse ourselves to finish getting ourselves together. When I swore, I heard a car pull into the driveway, a minute later there was a knock on the door.

I said, “Who the heck is here at this hour?”

My mother asked, “Tom, would you answer that please?”

As I got up, I said, “Sure mom.”

I walked over to the door, opened it, and was startled. ...

Amy and I had chosen a new car and picked it up. It was a graduation gift from our parents.

We had taken a hike on the lake trail, and this time we had a blanket with us. Then we’d washed the ‘61 Chevy but ended up getting more water on us then on the car.

My parents had taken us out for pizza. When we were back home, and Amy and I were getting ready for bed as Amy crossed off Friday on the calendar, she said, “Five and counting.”

Chapter 78
New car. A thunderstorm. A hike.

I had received a newsletter, from the Fairbrothers, that is written for the American Indian people, and it had an excellent article in it about the two spirt people, and they’d used a picture of Kai and Ajie in it.

The most significant thing that had happened to us is that Amy and I had graduated from college, and she did it as a Summa Cum Laude graduate. I love this girl and I’m so proud of her.

Well, our parents giving us a new car was another big thing that happened.

The day after commencement Amy had to take the exam so that she could be a licensed registered nurse. And I’d just picked her up after she’d finished the exam and we were on the way to a drive-in to get her something to eat. As I drove, I asked her, “So, how do you feel you did?”

Chapter 77
A newsletter. And Commencement.

Amy and I, or really Amy and Kai, had gone to a support group meeting for two reasons, first to say so long to some people. And I also wanted to see Dr. Whitmeyer or Claire, who was supposed to be there.

Today was Monday, April 3, the first day of our final quarter of undergraduate studies. We had a calendar in our bedroom that showed the countdown to two things. The first was the countdown to commencement, and that was at seventy days. The second was the countdown to the day we leave for New Mexico, and that was at eighty days.

Amy and I only had three classes each this quarter, and none of those classes met on Friday. So, in theory, we had three day weekends. But Amy set Friday as her day to study for her test for her registered nurse's license. And that was okay because it was important to her.

Amy found out that since there was such a large graduating class of nurses that the university was going to be a testing site for the registered nurse's license exam, and that they planned to give the test on the Monday after commencement. No partying after commencement for us.

Chapter 76
Kai is here. The support group again.

Moving to New Mexico was now one step closer. Amy and I had filled out our forms to do our master's work at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and mailed them.

Something had told us that we should take the little tree that had grown from the twig that we’d buried a few months ago in mom’s flower garden with us to New Mexico.

I had all but given up on Maria and Mark coming out to New Mexico when Kelly and Larry were there so that the whole crew could experience a Southwestern barbecue together. But I still had a few months to try and figure something out.

And to top it off, when I’d told my Aunt Ruth what we were going to do, she had come up with most of the furniture that we needed for the apartment. May the Great Spirit bless her.

Chapter 75
It’s a go. The tree. Please Maria.

Maria appeared to be a little depressed over our pending move to New Mexico. And Amy being Amy was worried about her.

Dr. Whitmeyer had come back into our lives again. Dr. Grunewald had sent me a copy of Dr. Whitmeyer paper titled, ‘The Nádleeh. The two spirit people of the Navajo.’ He has promised to write this as part of his apology for what he had tried to do to Dr. Grunewald and Larry at the seminar. Everyone that has read it was happy with what Dr. Whitmeyer had written.

Then Kelly, Larry, Amy, and I had talked about how to get Maria and Mark out to the resort with us for one of the Friday barbecues.

Our package from the University of New Mexico had arrived. And Amy had told my mother, that “It’s kind of scary.”

Chapter 74
Dr. Whitmeyer again. How can we do this?

We had made a decision on Amy’s scholarships. It was New Mexico. Some people we told were happy for us, some were sad, and some were surprised.

How did I feel about this?

We’d be leaving all of our friends and family, that made me sad. We’d be going to someplace that we loved, that made me happy. We’d probably make new friends our age out there. That was a good thing. I’d be with Amy, and that made me extremely happy. So yes I was happy about this, but at the same time nervous. It was a big move, but we have friends and family out there.

Tonight we were having ice cream with the crew, Maria, Mark, Kelly, and Larry. And we were talking with them about having to go out to New Mexico early because they wanted Amy to take a couple of classes.

We also learned that Kelly and Larry were planning on going out to the resort in early July. And we’d told them about the barbecue.

During that part of the discussion, we hadn't been paying attention to Maria and Mark. That was until, I heard Maria almost whisper, “I wish we could be there.”

Chapter 73
You only live once.

Amy and I had dinner with my parents, her parents, and her brother Bill. The main reason for this dinner was to talk about the two scholarships offers that Amy had received. And talk we did. Bill’s comment of, 'you only live once' may have flipped a switch with Amy.

We’d also planned a dinner with the crew to show them the photo album of the fake wedding that Amy and I had, with me as the bride and Amy as the groom. We also decided to surprise them by Tammy dressing like the bride she was that day.

Now, I was standing just outside the door to the den, dressed to the nines as a bride, listening to the discussion over the photo album.

Chapter 72
Another talk. A phone call. The wedding dress.

Kelly and Larry were now married. And there was some dramatics between Kelly and her cousin Mary Beth. And Amy ended up being Kelly’s matron of honor.

When we returned home from the wedding, there was, along with our grades, a letter from the University of New Mexico's College of Nursing for Amy. They were offering her a full ride scholarship for her master's degree. The College of Nursing here at home had already offered Amy a full ride scholarship. Amy and I talked about this, and it was decided to have Amy’s parents over for dinner with my parents, and have a family meeting.

In bed that night and cuddled up with Amy, I’d said, “You do know what I’ll want to do if we move to New Mexico. Don’t you?”

Chapter 71
The wedding. A letter. A talk.

We were with Maria and Mark in Kelly’s hometown, Muncie Indiana, for Kelly and Larry’s wedding. And Maria and Mark had learned some interesting things about me.

On Friday we had a wedding rehearsal, a rehearsal dinner, and then we decorated the church hall for the reception. Larry didn’t want a bachelor’s party. But the girls went to a bachelorette party set up by Kelly’s cousin Mary Beth who was also the maid of honor. The party had been a bust thanks to a stripper. And there had been some nasty words between Kelly and Mary Beth.

It was possible that Mary Beth wouldn’t show up at the wedding. Who would take her place?

Amy had told me that what she saw with Mr. O’Brian and his nervous breakdown was looking good. But we’d see happens with the wedding. I was keeping my fingers crossed.

Saturday all the girls were at a beauty shop to have their hair, makeup, and nails done. And they’d go from there to the church in a limousine. Larry, Mark, and I were sitting around the hotel until we needed to put on our tuxedos and drive to the church. We wouldn’t see the girls again until the wedding. Hmm, let’s see, where would I rather be?

Chapter 70
Mark and Maria learn things. And, not good.

We had gotten a letter back from Amy’s mother’s cousin in England that confirmed that one of Amy’s grandmothers was an Indian girl from the ‘Colonies’ by the name of Weetamoo, or as they called her in England, Willow. And Amy was very excited about it. But why can't I feel Amy’s native ancestry like I could our lawyer, Mrs. Edwards?

Now we were over in Muncie, Indiana for Kelly and Larry’s wedding. And we’d met the whole family. Mr. O’Brian had apologized to me. One of Kelly’s brothers, Kevin, I couldn’t read. He was the strong silent type. Another brother, Jack, the priest, I think he tried to get me into a debate over religion, and I quickly quashed that. I hope. And her other brother, Connor had been hurt when the helicopter he was flying crashed. I think he’s lucky to be alive.

We’d spent the evening with Kelly’s family, and the four of us were now on the way back to the hotel. And I asked, “Amy, what were you and Kelly whispering about?”

Chapter 69
A letter from England. Back at the O’Brians.

Larry had a nasty run-in with his future father-in-law and had received a black eye. The crew had gotten together to not only comfort Larry but to try to figure why it happened and what to do about it. Amy had concluded that Kelly’s dad might be having a nervous breakdown.

The Chief Nastas Todachine Memorial Scholarship was finally a go.

Today, Saturday, we had some fun when all the bride maids in Kelly’s wedding came to town for dress fittings. And Tammy went along. Of course, only Amy, Kelly, and Maria knew that Tammy wasn’t a real girl. It appeared that Kelly and Maria were a little nervous undressing in front of Tammy. But a talk afterward seems to have gotten them to understand who Tammy is. Maybe.

And now the crew was coming over for frybread tacos. And lessons on how to make frybread. So after Amy and I were back home, Tammy became Kai. A blond Kai. Well, we need a Southwestern girl to make a Southwestern meal. Don’t we?

Chapter 68
Oh no, Larry. The scholarship. A fitting.

We had a talk with Amy’s mother about her ancestors. Then called Amy’s grandmother and found that one of Amy’s mother’s cousins in England had done some research on the family. Amy wrote a letter to the cousin asking about the possibility of an Indian ancestor. All this over a dream.

Then a hike on the lake trail had become interesting, very interesting.

We met with our lawyer and financial advisor about the scholarship. And Cathy, our lawyer, met Tom for the first time.

Mom and dad had come back from Hawaii. And now Amy and I were on the way to Kelly and Larry’s apartment to find out what had happened with Kelly’s father and Larry. It didn’t sound good.

Amy and I walked up to the door to Kelly and Larry’s apartment. As we had parked next to their car, we knew that Maria and Mark were already here. I knocked on the door, and Kelly quickly opened it. I hate to say this, but she looked like hell.

We’d had an interesting weekend with Kelly’s family in Indiana. And I think that Kelly’s dad and I came to an understanding. At least I hope we did.

Amy had started having a reoccurring dream about an Indian girl and a sailor. They appeared to be lovers, and it was a long time ago. And Amy felt that she knew them or should know them.

We had gotten in touch with Naainish, and Amy had talked to him about the dream. After they hung up, I asked her, “Well. What were his words of wisdom?”

Church? Mary Beth. The dream.

Saturday had been a crazy day. We’d followed Larry and Kelly to Muncie Indiana to meet Kelly’s family. We met them alright, Mr. O’Brian and I had gotten into, for the lack of better words, a discussion. And I’d finished up by calling him a bigot. We’d left the house followed quickly by Kelly and Larry. Then we’d checked into a local motel and ended up sharing a room.

We’d been given the cooks tour of Muncie by Kelly. The last place we stopped was the church where Kelly and Larry were to be married. We had a nice talk with the priest. Then we found Mrs. O’Brian at the motel when we got back, and we discussed what had happened at lunch.

Then we went star gazing, Did the shooting star that Amy saw mean something?

Amy and I had gone with Kelly and Larry to Kelly’s hometown to meet her parents, the O’Brians. At first, it was okay, and then it got ugly. Kelly’s father had asked if I was a hippy. And I responded with, “Sir I am not a hippy! And neither is my wife. I’m a Navajo. A proud member of the Navajo Nation.”

Then, Mr. O’Brian had said, “Oh. So, you’re an Indian.”

“Yes sir, I am.”, I’d replied. “And proud of it!”

“You all should be kept on a reservation.”

“Excuse me!”

We’d found that the ‘dead’ piece of wood that Amy and I had planted in my mother's flower garden had grown. It was now about six inches tall and had some needles on it. My uncle thought that the tree it came from was a Colorado Pinyon Pine. We had also met with the attorney, Cathy Edwards, that we’d met in New Mexico and spoke with her about setting up the scholarship.

Today, being Tuesday, I had an early morning appointment with Helen Taylor, the hairdresser that works at the department store where my mom works. And I had to face the wrath of Helen about my black hair.

We’d gone bowling with our friends, and some guy had harassed Amy about being with an Indian, just like what had happened in Taos. The manager of the bowling alley had thrown him out. When the guy had left the bowling alley, we’d heard a car peel out of the parking lot and then a tremendous crash.

We’d run out, and Amy had checked the only occupant. Amy looked at me and said that it didn’t look good. After the cops and fire department where there, we’d come back inside and were talking with our friends.

The last day, for now.

It was Sunday morning, our last full day here. I was lying in bed enjoying the feeling of Amy’s naked body cuddled up to my naked body. I’m glad Amy came up with the idea of sleeping in the nude.

Yesterday had been a good and a bad day. A fun time at the dance competition had turned into a bad time thanks to Chief Peshlakai, and I’d almost put an end to the scholarship thanks to him. But thanks to Dibe I hadn’t. And Ajie, Naainish, and I had had a long talk with Dibe’s family.

But today we had to get ready to head home. And this time instead of flying, we’d be driving.

Chief Peshlakai had pulled something that had made me very mad. He had told everyone at the competition about the Chief Todachine Scholarship and that Dee would be the recipient of the first one.

They’re one son was one.

Naainish had also had an interesting talk with us. More with Ajie than with me.

Then Amy and I had taken a drive to Taos to see Mr. Yazzie and found out that the two stones that we’d taken out of the hole in the rock were meteorites. Why meteorites?

Yesterday was crazy. Amy and I had followed a bunch of bent trees that led us to the rock outcropping. Then after we got back to the cabin and had dinner, we had one of the hikers that we’d seen on the trail earlier show up looking for help. His friend had fallen and hurt himself. Then the cabin became the base camp for a mountain rescue crew for a few hours.

Today, Wednesday, we were heading back to the resort.

Amy’s parents had picked up my parents, Amy, and I, in their van and taken us to the airport. We said a long so long. Promised to be safe and to take care of ourselves. And we told them that we’d see them in a few weeks. Amy and I slept all the way to Dallas and then endured our one-hour layover.

After we left Dallas, Amy started talking about the last Friday of her clinicals. And she finally said, “The ...

Chapter 45
Amy! Why? And Maria’s wedding.

Amy had spent the first part of this week gathering together copies of our college transcripts and letters of recommendation for herself. And we both had filled out the transient student registration applications.

Then on Friday when Amy and I had gotten together to come home, she was very quiet. She had something on her mind.

She was quiet all the way home, and when we got there, she took my hand, and said, “Tommy. Let's go sit on the porch.”

She led me out onto to porch and to the glider. We sat and cuddled for a little while, then Amy said, “Tommy. Honey. You’re going to hate me.”

“Never.”, I said.

“Yes, you will.”

“Why?”

“I …

Chapter 44
Can we really do this?

We'd gone to a support group meeting with Patty and Ralph. And we had a surprise, Dr. Whitmeyer, the professor that had tried to disrupt the seminar where Larry's paper was presented, and that Tammy had politely told off, was there dressed as Claire. And the second meeting between Claire, or Dr. Whitmeyer, and I had been interesting.

The girls, Maria, Amy, and Kelly, had started planning for Maria’s wedding this coming summer. They had firmed up a date of the second Saturday in July, July 9, at the local Catholic church.

Then Amy had found out that she could do her clinicals next summer at any teaching hospital that would accept her. This just might make things a little interesting.

Chapter 43
The support group.

Amy, Patty, Ralph, and I had been sitting outside the church where the support group met, watching the membership arrive. I had a bad feeling about this meeting, but so far I hadn’t sensed anything about the people going in. We were about to go in when a car pulled in.

I watched as the man got out of his car, remove a suitcase from his trunk, and walk into the church. I had a bad feeling about this guy. And, Ralph had gotten out of our car saying, “You three wait here, and I’ll be back.”

We watched as Ralph followed the guy into the church.

Amy then asked, “What were you feeling?”

“It was almost like what I felt with Ralph when I first met him. There was something, but it was different in some way.”

“So you’re concerned about that guy that Ralph followed into the church.”, Patty asked.

“Yeah. It may be nothing. But then … “

Doubts 2

Becky continues her narrative of her life, constantly weighing the cost of being who she is.

I'm back in my office fighting tears. I want to know who the complainer is but know it's best I do not. If I knew I would run to her, tell her I too know fear, or at least I did. I was able to escape mine, suppressed it for decades while I receiving daily doses of testosterone against my will, becoming a man. Except I feel fear again now sometimes when I walk alone in the dark from Metro to my car. I no longer feel I could defend myself against an attack.

Chapter 41
A girls get together. Daddy, you’re going!

Somehow my Dad and I found time to make the frames for the certificates and the pictures of Grandpa Nez. It was interesting, but in working with the branches of the tree, I felt something. Maybe it was the spirit of the tree. Both Amy and Mom liked what Dad and I did. Dad put one of the pictures of grandpa up in the den, along with the certificates. The other picture I put on the wall in our room.

Amy and I kept going to the karate classes twice a week, and the instructor spent time teaching moves to use in self defense. We also did regular walks in the park. And Mom started on our Navajo language lessons.

At the next full Moon, something unusual happened. ...

Chapter 40
The aftermath and Kelly finds out.

Amy and I had said so long to Kelly and walked out of the lecture hall. As we walked out of the door, we found Dr. Whitmeyer and a couple of the people who’d left with him standing there. I froze.

We just looked at each other, then he finally said, “Young lady. Can I speak to you?"

“No sir.”, I said. “I have nothing to say to you.”

“Young lady. Please. ...

Chapter 39
The Seminar.

My friend Larry had told us about a seminar at the university, to be hosted by Dr. Grunewald, that dealt with cross-dressers and homosexual people. It was going to be held this Friday and Saturday. And the paper that Larry, who is an undergraduate student, had written for a psychology class was so good that it was going to be presented. This paper was about me.

Dr. Grunewald was the psychologist that had helped me when I was attacked on campus. When she had hypnotized me, she had a big surprise, she met Tammy and talked with her through me.

Chapter 38
Not again. Back home again.

We had arrived at the airport and checked in at the airline’s desk, given them our suitcases, and then the five of us went to the gate to wait for boarding. We were early, so we found a place to sit and talk.

After we’d been sitting there for a few minutes, I looked over at the gate and saw something. I whispered to my uncle, “Uncle Paul. Am I being a little paranoid or ...

A decision? Maybe.

We’d just had dinner with my grandmother, aunt, and uncle, and we talked about our trip to Taos and everything that had happened. Then the five of us headed towards the hotel and the bonfire.

As we walked, I said, “You know. I think I just want to enjoy the fire and the singers tonight. It’s like everything is as it should be.”

A cuddle. And a trip to Taos.

As we walked into our suite, I looked at the couch, and said, “You know what?”

“What?”, Amy replied.

“I’d love to build a fire in the fireplace, and cuddle naked with you on that couch in front of the fire.”

“Lover, I like your thinking. But one of two things would happen.”

“What?”

As we walked down the trail from the cliff, we saw that the bonfire was just beginning. And Amy asked, “Are we going to the bonfire tonight?”

“Since we’re spending tomorrow night at the airport hotel, we’d better.”, I said. “Besides I have a feeling that I should.”

Again. Why me?

When Amy and I returned to the resort, we stopped at my aunt and uncle’s house and found my aunt and grandmother there. As we walked in, my grandmother said, “Kai. Ajie. How was your meeting with the Chiefs?”

Amy and I looked at each other. Then Amy looked at my grandmother, put her hands on her hips, and said, ...
