Chapter 40

Nathan and I kissed for like several minutes that seemed like seconds before we were interrupted by the PA system "All students and faculty please finish sign in and enter the gymnasium, we are about ready to start the back to school assembly, assembly will begin in 10 minutes!"

Our embrace ended, and we began to walk to the gymnasium, it was awfully a long walk to the gymnasium. I was stared at by all the girls and boys or at least most of them, hearing some of them say stuff like, "Who is she?!"

"Oh! Nathan won't go out with any of us but he will for a red head!"

"Look at her guys, wouldn't mind a piece of that!"

Although I liked the envy al a little bit, I couldn't help but feel like a mannequin being eyed by everyone each having something to say about me critical, nice, and all some of them I wanted to bop in the head.

The Gymnasium was huge, there were at least a thousand seats waiting for the rears of students and faculty facing the stage. Nathan and I took the 8th Isle seat right on the corner. We talked for a while waiting for the assembly to begin. Once it began, we hushed Nathan had his left arm wrapped around my waist around back and I had my right around him in the same place.

"Welcome students to the 2003-2004 year here at Algonquin Secondary School, or what you kids these days like to call Algonquin High I am your principle Mr. Watson...You will each be handed a rules and regulations book upon returning to your home-rooms ...after lunch we will have the extra curricular booths set up for all of your sign ups, remember everyone, it is mandatory to have at least one extra curricular activity, all morning you will have shortened classes so you can go to al of them in the morning today, school today will let out at 3:30...Now that everything is established you may all go to your home-rooms" spoke Mr. Watson.

Nathan walked me to my Home-room, and then we parted ways with a long embracing kiss, that made many girls giggle at the site of us as they walked by.

"Well it is about time young lady please take a seat" said a grey haired woman as I entered the class who had obviously watched Nathan and mines embrace in the halls.

"Thank you ma'am" I replied blushing with glee, taking a seat 3rd in the 3rd row.

I will not bore you with the mornings events as they were the same, fill out papers listen to teachers babble on, and then start it all again in five minutes at the next class.

The funny part was though that I was asked by almost every teacher and some students when I immigrated here, I of course told them that I was born and lived here my whole life and no one believed me. They said I had a very strong Irish accent. I suppose from learning Gaelic and Latin, spending time with Irish travelers (Irish Gypsy's) it was something that must have happened, after all they say you progress with your surroundings, right!

Nathan and I were eating lunch together. I asked him "Do I have an accent?"

Nathan looked at me like are you crazy "Yes! I thought you knew, It sounds Irish right?"

"No! I didn't know, is it bad" I asked.

"No! It is really exotic, I love it on you" replied Nathan who pulled me into yet another kiss.

The cafeteria erupted in whistles and whoop whoops and so forth by those that saw us, it was kinda embarrassing.

The Afternoon went well I picked a few extra curricular, this school had more interesting things to do then any other school I was at. I signed up as a peer counselor, fencing, and chess club. Nathan signed up with fencing too to be with me, and the hockey team.

After school, Mr. Barton picked us up and drove me home. I spent a couple of hours on my homework. Then I was called down for dinner.

It was nothing all that special, just hamburger helper.

"So how was your day Morwen?" mum asked, Richard shaking his head at my feminine name being called to attention.

"It was good, Nathan and I made out like at least a dozen times, I have a great schedule, signed up for 3 extra curricular, you know Nathan and I have Home-Ec, math and fencing together" I answered in a dreamy state of excitement.

Mum looked at me, this was the first time I had ever took an interest in extra curricular activities yet alone sign up for any especially three. She never saw me like this when I was Derek in her eyes, never so giddy, dreamy or even happy like this...the thoughts in mum head were soon ended by an unfriendly outburst.

"So you are turning that boy gayer and gayer eh, what's next a fashion class too. Home-Ec is for girls and fairy's, you fit in it but does he what did you do, your voodoo to get him in the class with you so you two can play house" stated Richard furiously rude.

I was now getting completely angry, the fan in the kitchen dining room we were in began to spin, though it wasn't on, and then it began to shake.

"He is all man Richard, more than I could say about you" I said out of anger.

Richard got up and said "What did you say to me!"

"I said, he is more than a man than you!" I replied angrily smug.

SMACK! "Richard!" SMACK! "Stop it! Stop it! Get off of her! I said get off of her, now!!!" mum said repeating herself over and over again while Richard made an example of me.

The trauma of the beating, caused me to black out, after I heard a crash on the floor and breaking of glass around the room.

Chapter 41

I woke up in my bed traumatized, deeply traumatized mumbling incoherently, my psychokinetic energy shaking everything around my room and some things around the house from the very trauma. Mum although scared was by my bedside though Mark was no where to be found.

Mum was holding a cloth to my forehead, and patting my head with her hand. "It'll be ok sweety, he's gone now mark is out finding him, but don't worry he will get what he deserves" said mum soothingly yet worrying.

She was trying not to let on what Mark is totally up to. Mark had gone to the clan at the park to get all the guys together, Nathan was with him, as he was coming around about the time that Mark left, who was filled in. Both Mark and Nathan wanted Justice, though first they wanted to repay the favor so-to-say.

Mum's right eye was darkly bruised, and she had a split lip. I fell back to sleep aching in pain, with exhaustion was overtaking me.

I woke up in the middle of the night, I could tell as I looked at my window where the dark sky showed the many pokadots of stars glistening in the sky. Mum must have been in her room as I was left alone, I got out of bed and grabbed my pink fluffy robe and put it on tying the sash around my waist. I walked out of my room and down the hall to the room straight from the stairs and knocked, not getting an answer I opened the door, and mum was not there in fact her bed looked as if it hadn't been slept in as the sheets were still made properly on the bed.

I walked down stairs limp-footed as I was still in sever pain. At the bottom of the stairs hanging in front of me was a mirror, looking back at me I looked a fright. My eyes and areas around my eyes were meshed with different colors of bruises, my lips had cuts and were puffy, my chin was black and blue and my forehead had a huge bump and bruising of a dark purple and cloudy red. I didn't even give care for my messy hair as what I saw as what is of my face, horrified me to no end, and I broke down crying, and crying and crying some more. The tears touching my bruises made me hurt even more, as the skin was very sensitive, raw and extremely sore.

Mum and Mark had walked back in with me huddled on the floor in a fetal position. The lights flickering on and off dimmer to dimness. Mum coming to the floor to pull me up.

"Sweety, get up. Everything will be ok, what's the matter" said mum concerned.

I got up with her help "Look at me, why did he do that?" I replied in tears and pain.

"Because he is a man, that's what they do" replied mum trying to calm me down by a hug.

Mark stood there not knowing what to say until he heard that "Not all men, mum some are good like me!"

Mum looked at Mark who had a bandaged hand, and some bruises on his face to, couldn't help but stifle a giggle. "You are still you fathers son though mark, give it time it starts with chivalry then becomes attacking, violent, and just the total opposite" stated mum.

"Well I won't be like that, especially not to my sister, she did a hell of a lot for me, I wouldn't be who I am today if it wasn't for her" said Mark, smiling making me smile though it hurt like heck to smile.

"Would you like to go to the hospital, sweety?" mum asked.

"No! I may be healed back up by tomorrow or slightly later, don't need the press around, wondering how I can heal fast" I answered abruptly.

"Where is Richard?" I asked

"He is in the hospital for now, but he will be brought to prison in a couple of days, the officer will let us know when the hearing will be" answered mum with a slight smirk, though she couldn't help feel remorse for the man she has some love for whom she spent countless years with. It made her feel sick that she had some love for him, the man that beat her children, and then her.

"What happened to him?" I asked.

Mum and Mark looked at one another and then mum spoke up again "ask your brother sweety".

"What happened?" I asked Mark looking at him and his bandaged hand and bruised and cut face.

"We gave him what he deserved, a bunch of us hunted him down to the bar in town, a bunch of us guys Walter, and Malcolm, Nathan and his dad, a few more from the clan..." said Mark with pride "Some of the guys at the bar tried to protect him so we got in a brawl, but once we told them what he had done most of them stopped beating on us and helped us by beating him and his no good friends up, even the bar keeper helped beat the living crap out of him..." Mark smirked and smiled with pride sounding excited "So now the Bastard is in ICU, handcuffed to his bed with guard always keeping watch of him. You actually got it pretty easy, then what became of him, bloody funny it is we beat him up so bad he was crying like a little girl in pain begging us to stop!" mark really relished his victory.

"You shouldn't have done that, it makes you as bad as he" I said feeling sympathy for him.

"I did it for you though, I thought you'd be as happy as me" replied Mark a little hurt.

"I may have been yes, but you shouldn't have done it, maybe its a girls perspective, but beating on him with perhaps twenty or more people against on or a couple extra, isn't really chivalrous, it sounds brutal, and it makes you the same as he is if not worse, its the many after the few" I said "I thank you for trying to do something nice, but next time try to put forgiveness beside revenge" I stated.

Mark looked at me hurt and confused then said "Ok! I will try your way next time, but I couldn't help it was just growing inside me and had to take care of him for what he did to you my mind was blocked, I had to act at that moment" replied Mark.

"I know, it's not your fault, if I was in your shoes I probably would have done the same thing, though I don't know, lets drop it ok" I said Mark nodding in agreement and walked upstairs to bed.

"How are you though mum, baby still ok?" I asked.

"Yes, I think so he only got my face" replied mum.

"Good, should go to bed though you look pretty tired" I replied.

"Yes! You too sweety, lets get you back upstairs" Mum replied "So what other courses and EC's are you taking?" asked mum.

I filled mum in on our way upstairs, and she tucked me in and kissed my forehead which stung when she did that, turning off the light and walked out of my room closing my door saying "Have a good nights sleep" I repeated a half moan before falling asleep.

Chapter 42

I went to school the following day, beyond everyone's better judgement, I put some mugwort on my face before my shaving that morning, to get rid of the bruises on my face. I then showered and powdered, dressed in a light pink bra and panty set, and then my uniform. I put my hair up, in a blue and white headband. I then put on a little over more than I usually do of makeup, because the bruises had gone down a lot though not enough as there were still some heavily dark marks still on my skin.

I was picked up by Nathan and Mr. Barton again. We drove in silence for most of the way, I was running everything from last night in my head, backwards and forwards and then blurted out "Do you think I am turning you gay?"

"What! NO! How on earth can you say that! Oh course not that's absurd, there is nothing wrong if someone wants to be that but no absolutely not me" replied Nathan. "Who put such a silly thought like that in your head?"

"Richard, right before..." I said being cut off.

"Richard is an idiot, he proved that last night when he beat you and thought he could get away with it" stated Nathan abruptly.

I didn't know what to think, I was confused again in my life. I wanted to kiss Nathan but held back, not anting to make such a scene that could be of harm to him, not wanting to change him, not wanting to instill pain like what I got. Maybe Richard was right, maybe I am, maybe Nathan is like him, Maybe Nathan will turn out to be like what mum said ‘it starts out with chivalry' then ‘turns to the opposite' ‘vengeful, attacking etc' I don't want to be like that I want him to be him, the man I love, but I don't want that to effect him. I don't know what to do, what to think, and so forth, feeling stuck in a pit of unknown knowledge.

My morning classes were ok, though there was plenty of gossip going on and points and stares at me. I didn't pay much attention in class though mum made sure that the school was sympathetic over the reason why just in case so they let it pass.

When it came time for my Home-Ec class I was a little more alert. Nathan and I looked at each other here and there, I wanted to kiss him, I wanted to feel his arm around me. I repelled though so as not to disturb him any more than I already have. It was then that I realized it is not him, it is not me, it is morons like that Richard who think by doing something out of normality is what makes a person change in the worst ways such as doing feminine dominated roles can turn a manly man into a soft, frail person that many like to think means gay, queer, homosexual, sissy, the horrible names that make up societies differences just so others can be subjected to horrible abuse and sufferings. I quiet frankly was tired of it, and without thinking raised my hand.

"Miss Hearth?" asked the Mrs. Blossom, a kind heavy looking short lady with dark brown permed hair.

"May I please be excused, I have to settle something and it can't wait" I said.

"Miss Hearth, I am in the middle of a lesson can it weight for after school" replied Mrs. Blossom a little irritated.

"Sorry ma'am but it can't I must do it now or I may never be able to" I replied.

"Well what is so important to interrupt and skip out of my class?" asked Mrs. Blossom.

"Last night! Ma'am, it must be put to rest and never have it happen again" I answered.

"Well I think it can wait for after class" said Mrs. Blossom turning back to address the class to continue her lecture.

I was irritated now, she was being a bitch. I took my purse, and took out a cloth and wiped away my makeup. I then stood up and looked at Mrs. Blossom right in the face and said "If you can't let me settle this right now honorably, I will leave here right now dishonorably!"

Many of the students gasped at the sight of my face. Some even started sobbing and crying by the look of me.

"Fine Miss. Hearth, you may leave. J-Just don't interrupt my class again for something so frivolous" said Mrs. Blossom, trying not to show she didn't like the looks of my face and the thought of how it had happened.

I left the room, and headed for the bathroom, taking out my transportation potion and threw it on the ground disappearing in a cloud of pink smoke.

I arrived in the parking lot at the hospital in Ottawa, the same one that I had been to when I was run over. I entered the building and went right to the secretary.

"Where is ICU ma'am" I asked.

Down the hall there for three corridors, and turn right and walk another four corridors, there will be two swinging doors right down the hall, that's ICU" answered the secretary.

I entered the ICU in maybe another five minutes or more, and asked to see the prisoner from last night. Seeing my face she knew of the event and although risking her job pointed to a curtain covered room.

I pulled the curtain open which I was apprehended by a police officer, and was told I was not to be here.

"I need to say my final words to him, he did this to me and I have every right to approach my attacker" I orderly said.

The officer looked at me and relented, "fine but you only get four minutes!"

The officer walked off to let me be with him alone.

"Wake up you sick bastard!" I yelled, causing him to wake up in haste.

"What who are you, what do you want?" asked Richard confused.

"Oh! Don't remember who I am under all these bruises eh?" I said spitefully.

"Derek! God what the hell are you doing here, you sick freak. Get out of here and leave me alone!" responded Richard rudely.

"You listen here and listen good, this is the last time we will talk where you will be living" I said causing Richard to open his mouth but before he could talk I cut him off.

"You hurt me, mum and Mark. You made a mockery out of our lives. You nearly did far more worse than you could ever have know, not to mention you should be arrested and thrown in the clink for dear life. You say I am a freak so you go around and beat the crap out of me, you try to teach me bigoted views. Tell me I am turning my boyfriend gay, you tell me it is wrong for me to be a girl, and then you beat me up. For starters you are going to learn what it is like in prison all your bigoted views are going to come and hit you in the ass, sometimes rape does happen in the clink, it's funny actually you were once the big man of the house and when you get to the big house you are going to be a wife to a man of the big-house. People like you don't deserve special treatment and I am sick to death of your creepy ideas about how everyone should be alike and do what you say, it is ridiculous"

"So from now on except when we see you in trial, it will be the last time. You shall not have any contact with us ever again. If I even see a sight of hair of you, I will do much worse to you than Derek ever could have, is that understood" I demanded.

Richard was in a state of shock and denial, though he managed a single a yes with his head.

I then stormed out of the hospital and traveled back home for the night.

Morwen Should Conjure Up A Spell

jengrl's picture

Morwen should conjure up a spell to turn the no good bastard into exactly what he despises. I absolutely cannot stand idiots like him. I knew he was no good from the first chapter.

PICT0013_1_0.jpg

dear Jengrl

ha ha, yes that would be to Richard a fate way worse than death itself so I agree with you

Just as bad...

I keep hearing that someone who defends him/herself is just as bad as the attacker. That is patently wrong. The attacker is doing it for some personal gain, and doesn't care who is hurt. The defender is trying to keep harm from himself and those he/she loves.

Is Mark and company just as bad as Richard? That is a bit more difficult to determine.

Still, it all comes down to motivation. Richard was bullying. He attacked someone who cause (and meant) him no harm. It's only his refusal to let her live her life the way she wants to live it that caused him to be upset by her transformation.

Morwen's defenders were responding in kind. If they had merely captured him and taken him to (official United States) justice, they would be above reproach. As it is, they applied the justice of the clan. Whether or not you think that that's OK depends on your tolerance for other cultures operating within the confines of the dominant US culture.

Whether or not you think they went over the top, they can in no way be construed as being as bad as the perpetrator. Richard actually reap what he sowed.

In any case, right or wrong, they are in no way as bad as Richard.

What concerns me is Morwen's mom. She seems to have a very negative opinion about men in general. ‘It starts out with chivalry,' she says -- strongly implying that there is no such thing as a good man who'll treat his lady right.

By the way, there were some slight hints in the previous episode that hints that Nathan may be a magic user, too -- and maybe even a trans man (though I really doubt the second.)

This is a very entertaining story, and I can't wait to read more.

The Story Takes Place In Canada

jengrl's picture

The story takes place in Canada. I don't know what the laws are about self defense up there? The reaction to what Richard did was definitely in line with how a majority of the U.S population feels about Domestic violence. Prison inmates make life a living hell for anyone who harms a woman or a child. I believe Richard will face this same thing (that is if he heeds Morwen's warning) Something tells me that he isn't that smart though.

PICT0013_1_0.jpg

What I was referring to in Morwens point of view

Was the fact that it was vengence, and not totally self defense. Defense in my perspective is when you act in self protection at the current situation at the current time. But if you are to go after someone for an act passed, such as after the attack was both started and completed, then it is yet a snow balled attack, a vengefull act.
Plus, Morwen was scared and doesn't like to see her younger sibling in a fight, she had to go threw it, and doesn't like the thought of Mark being stuck in a situation that may have cuased him harm.
In canada, self defense under the law is very binding. I took highschool grade 11 basic Intro-canadian law and we learned alot of it. The big thing that they will allow in defense of self is defending at the moment of the occurance.
My mother when she defended herself against my dad when he beat her, scratched his back with her finger nails up so bad it left a scar. she was sticking her finger nails right into his back to try and get him off of her, she was took to prison for the night and then was released to an anselma house (for abused wives and mothers) dad was never charged by police, even though mum had the scars to prove it to them.
My sister was touched by my step father, and when she and I tried to tell the police, and we were told that self defense is only able at the time of such occurance of need. But after words if to go after someone for an act is considered, attempted assault, and if acted on is considered first degree assault. You can end up in prison for up to 4 years. If you have more than 1 accomplice with you to hunt down an attacker it is considered anywhere between 3rd and 4th degree assault and battery.
Unfortunitly canadian law has 90% more laws to protect the perpetrators then the victems. Thats why you hardly hear anything about vicious crimes such as these in canada, though much of the time like 75% the criminal will as all canadians know about (at least most) will make a plea bargain with authorities.
My grandfather (mum's dad) who tried tro kill his sister in law for who ever knows why with a telephone cord, was sent to prison for what was supposed to be 6 years, got out by the november following his sentence court date for good behaviour. he spent maybe 10 months in prison.

Canadian law I think needs some work for those that get attacked.

Although by the canadian charter of human rights, it is all to protect us, there are laws that go against almost every aspect of the charter, including religious rights. aka.

practicing magick and being caught, senteced etc. will lead to you betwenn 4 months and 2 years in prison, and/or a $2000 canadian, and/or a probation and community hours no less than 300 hours, followed by house arrest. That was just from the 2002 article of crime watch magizine, I beleave the May edition.

Revenge

I agree that the clan were after revenge. Really, what is the difference between revenge and justice? Aside from the fact that revenge very often tends to go overboard (he was hurt way more than Morwen was,) it's largely that justice is dealt out by some official entity, while revenge is perpetrated by private individuals. The fact that it was done by the clan puts it in a hazy area.

(And no, I don't really agree with what they did -- though I refuse to throw stones.)

There is another variable in the justice/vengeance/self defense equation. Sometimes, the act is done to prevent future occurrences.

One reason the court system punishes people is to act as a deterrent. How fast would you drive on the freeway if you had no worries about receiving a nasty fine? Deterrence is embraced by the legal system, the military (peace through superior firepower, not to mention retaliatory strikes,) and even organized crime (Guido gonna break your leg.)

Another reason for going after the original perpetrator can be best described as a preemptive strike. If you know that he's going to keep trying until he succeeds, it's better to get him first on your own terms, rather than waiting for him to catch you off guard.

But yah, Morwen was right that they were way over the top. They didn't sink as low as dear daddy, though.

Come again? It sounds like you're saying that the government recognizes magick, and has outlawed it.

By the way, I am well aware that the opinion of the character doesn't necessarily reflect the opinion of the writer. I'm enjoying your story, and I enjoy discussing it.

Story with a simple charm to it, but...

This story has a simple charm to it that makes it very attractive. But, what a shame the Author never had it proof-read or edited before posting it.
