A Conan-Doyle reject ?

Printer-friendly version

An extract from an early Sherlock Holmes story, which was later revised by Conan-Doyle.

~~~~~
Holmes examined the body. “What d’you think, Watson, you’re the doctor?”
“He was asphyxiated, but these red marks around his chest and waist and over his shoulders–I don’t know what to make of them. But I don’t believe in this ancient family curse.”
“It’s elementary, Watson.” He walked to a tallboy and rootled about in a drawer, “Ah-ha, the murder weapon.”
“Weapon? Surely there is no weapon, Holmes?”
“You have no lingering, or should that be lingerie doubts?”
“What d’you mean, Holmes?”
He extracted a piece of clothing all satin and lace, “Behold, Watson, The Basque of the Hundervilles.”
Short Chapters
There is what happened, and what a person thinks happened
and what a person will put in the record that happened.
When this is how the mind works it is interesting to note
that Watson can be so sure of himself. The story was
too brief, perhaps the briefness of the story has led
us to believe it was something dainty such as panties
that could commit such a heinous crime. I believe Watson
was trying to skirt the issue and not jump into the
possibility there were other possibilities. The crime
here remains to be resolved and needs to be addressed
in a fashionable manner.
But great story.
Had to say something different. My first comment got
entered twice.
You are all
...getting too involved. The culprit is obvious; a corset was the underwear.
You should be…
…basquing in our admiration, Dr Spooner. You must have been searching every crook and nanny of your brain for that delightful wee twist.
Love,
Hilary
What's with the bright yellow doorway, Holmes?
Lemon-entry, my dear Watson.
I realise that this has nothing to do with the story but Wilhelm Spokeshave he say 'Much Ado About Nothing'.
Given the torture weapon of choice, could it be that the victim wanted to be 'a slip of a girl'?
S.
Egad!
Look out - it's a booby trap!
ROFL
Thanks, I needed that. A well set up pun that flows so well... Thank you.
Bad Pun! Naughty, naughty author! Bad!
"In the supermarket, I wondered, if I achieved a profound understanding of my food, would they be grokeries instead of groceries?"
This is absolutely hilarious.
Did the basque squeeze the poor man to death? It is no secret that men in the time frame of Sherlock Holmes crossdressed, or secretly wished they were women. I wonder just how this story would write out if it were to be elaborated on? I just wonder.
I was in this little consignment shop in the Pyrenees when I
saw a beautiful jade green bask on a mannequin with a matching skirt.
The price for them both was a bit higher than I could afford at the moment,
so I asked the lady if I had to buy the skirt too.
My Spanish is pretty poor, so I was glad she spoke English, but she said
"You don't expect to buy the basque seperate, do you?
All of a sudden these three weird guys in monks in robes walked in,
shouting, "Nooooooooo-body expects the Basque Seperatists!"
.
Sorry, I got here late & all the good bad puns were taken.
Good one Ang, somehow Sherlock Holmes stories really
lend themselves to droll little parodies like this...
~~~hugs, Laika

The comments to this story

The comments to this story are almost better (grooooaaaaannnnn) than the story itself. They had me laughing so hard, that my eyes stung with the tears.
