I Hate Mother's Day

I'm truly happy to see so many celebrating Mother's day. Mothers go through a lot bringing a new life into the world, nurturing that child, then sending them out to stand on their own two feet. Bravo

BUT

I would much prefer it to be "Mommy's Day." Any genetic female with all her pieces parts working correctly can become a mother. It takes someone special to be a Mommy.

WHY do I hate it? It is widely acknowledged that my soon-to-be-ex wife never was, never will be a Mommy. She freely admits this.

Instead, virtually everyone agrees I was the Mommy of my family. Sometimes it felt like a single parent household to me. All the while I worked full time, and worked as a part-time chaplain.

Now, one of my children despises me because I wasn't "man enough" He's always looked for simplistic reasons and excuses. So, I can't sing to my grandchildren, can't read books/tell stories, all because he perceives man and woman as stark opposite side of a coin.

It's easy to laugh at one of his biggest complaints. I didn't show him how to shave.

Thank God not all my children feel that way. But all of my family (except my Mother) has turned their back on me as I'm responding to estrogen, and even earlier when I told them of my struggles.

So that's why I hate Mother's Day. It's a raw wound festering with the acid of hate and intolerance.

argh...

Mother

My suggestion would be to embrace and share your joy with your Mother, showing your appreciation for all the love and
acceptance she has given you over the years. She obviously has been a role model to you as you nurture your own kids. Afterall, it's the nurturer we are celebrating on Mother's day no matter what side of the gender coin someone is. And to the family members who have caused you such pain through their intolerance remember: No one has the right to steal your joy. Don't give them that right anymore.
