Much as it grieves me ...
... to add to the viewer count of the scurrilous rag my very late grandmother called the Daily Liar these are very good. Though until I saw the mention of Mark Twain I was expecting pictures of Oliver Cromwell and King Charles :)

A link to I'll Pass For Your Comrade, a book about women soldiers who fought in the American Civil War.
Not as high tech as the retouched Daily Mail photos, but still pretty amazing.
Mark Twain photo
The photo of Sam Clemens was not taken during the Civil War. He had red hair at the time, so red it looked black in photographs. A few photos exist of him from around that time when he was still young. I'd guess that photo is of Twain in his 60's, around 1890 or later.
