I had a very strange evening

I went out to eat at a fast food restaurant and felt a bit lonesome and bored afterwards. So I did something I do once in a while and headed over to the nearby casino to people watch.

As usual when I do this, I leave my purse and money in the car, taking in only myself, my keys and my phone and a small amount of cash in case I get hungry.

I wandered around for a bit and finally stopped behind one of the blackjack tables where a group of women were thoroughly enjoying themselves. I stood and watched for a bit. They were wearing very nice clothes and each had hundreds of dollars in chips in front of them. They all looked to be about forty or forty five. After a bit they invited me to sit at an empty spot and I explained that I had just come to watch and had not brought any money.

I was wearing a jeans skirt and a t-shirt so I was not at all dressed as much as they but they insisted and each of the three contributed $5 for a stake at the table for me. I hit a blackjack on the first hand and kept winning after that. At one point I had over $200 in front of me (I'm good at blackjack but I was also very lucky, in two hours I had seven blackjacks) but since I had not started with my own money and they were enjoying thoroughly my winnings I kept playing. They were from Huntington Beach and all of them had grown children and we just talked while we played. Two of them eventually confessed to needing to sleep.

By that time I had been losing for a bit, blackjack takes a lot of concentration, and I also felt tired. I said I needed to go to sleep too and offered them the stack of chips for them to split up since it was really borrowed from them. They insisted that I keep half of it which by that time amounted to $32. So I came in with nothing and left with $32. Pretty good for someone who seldom gambles even on penny slots. LOL.

Hugs,
Erin

I had a very strange evening

Well, it's nice that those ladies adopted you. I am guessing that that they are well off enough that they can afford to gamble, and there are some who are professional gamblers

Sounds like you came upon a group of friends you hadn't met yet. Most people are good to others when given the chance. An enjoyable evening was had by all.

I haven't been to a casino before.

Maybe that's a good idea. Moe n I have been trying to think of something new to do - Maybe one of these days, we should go out to a casino, just to try it.

When you do

KristineRead's picture

Go in with a set amount of money you are going to spend. When its gone, and it will be, leave. If you are one of the rare few that can walk away ahead, even better.

But just remember, the thing about a casino is to think of it as a night out, and that what you lose is what you would spend doing some other fun thing. This may happen in 5 minutes or 3 or 4 hours, depending on how much you allocate, what you are playing and a bit of luck.

Done this way it can be fun. If you have an addictive personallity and can't walk away, don't start. (My wife hates casino's because of this... )

Erin - sounds like an enjjoyable evening, I'm happy for you.

Hugs,

Kristy

This is critical...

This is critical. It's so easy (apparently) for you to have a bit of good luck, and then a chain of bad luck and keep thinking "Oh, I'll just dip into my purse, my luck is sure to change again and I'll have it all back).

Virtually ALL of the games are set up so that the HOUSE makes money. That's important to remember... For everyone that makes a lot, there are way more that lose it all. As Kristine points out, it IS possible to have a good time in a Casino (The ones I've visited did have good food, and many provide (or at least used to) free food/drinks to those actually at a playing - to keep them at the table.) As she says - decide how much you're willing to "lose" and keep to that amount (no matter what). Another thing I've heard some folks do - on the rare cases where they have strings of good luck is to put away their original stake (what you came in with - that you were willing to lose) and pretend it's not there... And just play with the winnings as long as you like... At that point, all the playing is "free".

You can generally find someone who will explain how each game works (the rules) at a casino - Not sure if all of them even have employees that do so.

Erin - Sounds like you're now a professional entertainer. :-) Hired entertainment for the evening. *innocent whistles* No, more accurately, congrats on a nice evening. Being really good at a game is hard work. :-)

I've been to a casino 3 times

And I agree wholeheartedly with bringing in or firmly adhering to a fixed set of money.

Back in the 70s and 80s when casinos in NJ in the US were still relatively new I got to go twice as a 16/17 year old and once by myself a decade later and in all cases I kept it well within bounds by only gambling in slots with only a fixed amount of money. In any case I never gambled beyond twenty dollars ( or about the equivalent of 40 to 80 dollars today. )

You have to leave with the mentality of 'when it's gone, it's gone'. That said, I find casinos the most boring form of entertainment ever and not worth the money. I hate the delusion they offer of 'putting one's self to fate' in the case of slots especially, you are setting yourself up for a blow to your ego as you feel non-worthy because of 'God did not favored your life, why?'. If you approach it clinically it is not as much fun as it is now a strictly mathematical puzzle ( other than the slots of course ) and it is no longer really fun imho.

That said, Erin deserves every bit of luck she receives if luck were possible for us the users of her labor could offer!

Kim

Oh, I don't know...

I thought it was fun to play roulette at the "Casino de Monte Carlo" in Monoco... (Yes, I had five one franc pieces... five bets and I was done.) So, I can say I've played the same place James Bond played... Only not so high a stakes. :-) LOL

I find most of the other games more interesting than the slots... A few of them, you can actually make a living playing... If you're good enough... (No, Roulette is NOT one of them.)

got a friend

That defuse this rule. He goes in with say $50. To spend. Watched him once win $600.00 and by time we left an hour later he gave the $600. Back Plus had pulled another $100. Off his debit card giving the casino a total of $150. Of his cash and 600 of their back.

Strange can be nice...

It just goes to show you never know "what's around the corner", thanks for sharing your nice evening with us, Hugs right back atcha, Taarpa

You left with more than money

It was lovely the way they welcomed you to their table. Chatting with people is one of the nicest things when it happens like that.
