More or Less
Posting a story, even just logging on for the day, gets you buttons. We're experimenting with the concept right now but the idea is that with buttons you will be able to do neat things like downloading ebook versions of stories or having access to the Hatbox.

...giving buttons deducts from your score (N.B. there's no feedback to indicate buttons have been sent - the screen reloads, so if you try and try again you'll find you've been overly generous!)... I wonder if it's possible to get a negative total? :)

Negative buttons
I just tried - it won't allow you to give away more buttons than you've got. As for earning them:
-x - those you give to others (i.e. giving buttons subtracts from your own balance)
1 - log in, give kudos
2 - write or comment on a blog
3 - comment on a story (perhaps for writing one as well?)
x - those given to you by others (depleting their own balance)

I've made some comments and not gotten ANY "buttons". I stay logged in all the time, so no "buttons" there. And I've not been given any. So "buttons" are less than a zero-sum game, and therefore of no particular use.
